Regarding the last few posts about religion and coffee i would like to suggest for those want to discuss that topic that a new thread is started.  I would hate for all the good info that people are putting on this thread to be lost in this debate.

what about "Rockstars" or "Monster" energy drinks? They aren't mentioned.. Are those prohibited? (sorry I know religious topics arent allowd, but just wondered)

I agree with smokin joe it is out there a ways and there weekend only hours are good for the weekend but not so hot for the weekdays.  The thing I like about the Dancing Dogs is that because I enjoy good drip coffee and espresso and tend to make those drinks at home I can just call the DD and they will deliver fresh roasted beans right to my door or if I am at work. Now that I like because I am so dang busy and hardly get the chance to buy beans even from places in town.

Yes sodas contain caffeine. Actually, it is "hot drinks" that they aren't supposed to drink, yet there again they drinkl hot cocoa. So, no, none of it makes sense.

Dancing Dogs would be soo much better if it was actually somewhere in Idaho Falls rather then out in the briarpatch, oh – and was open besides every fourth thursday or whatever it is that they are now open to. Coffee is good there though, and they even will make it w Rice Milk if ya don't want cows puss or soy in yours. very cool. Still, they are just not open like a regular coffee shop ought to be. I suspect it is again because of how far out in the middle of nowhere they are.

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Continuing on the topic of the best coffee in Idaho Falls from my last post I have more information for the coffee drinking public. A little science goes a long way in helping a person select the best tasting and most satisfactory coffee drinking experience out there.  So with that in mind it is important to know that a great tasting coffee beans has two major enemies: heat and oxygen. When you sip a truly wonderful cup of coffee and your taste buds rejoice it is because of acid compounds in the coffee that were release and catalyzed during the roasting process.  These acid compounds are somewhat delicate and will fade after about two to three weeks from the roasting date.  What that means to you is if you are drinking coffee that is past the three week mark from the date is roasted then you are drinking a significantly reduced quality in taste and body.  So check your roast dates ladies and gentlemen and demand fresh roasted coffee. Now the fading process is helped along by the aforementioned elements.  Heat speeds up the chemical process of oxidation and oxidation is the process that breaks down the flavorful acid compounds in our beans. Roasted beans kept at room temperature for longer than a day will show noticeable signs of deterioration in taste.  Beyond a day at room temperature and you might as well be drinking Folgers from the red can. In addition to heat oxygen plays the primary role is the fading of taste quality.  Beans need to be kept in airtight containers and sealed up immediately after each use.  If you are buying beans kept in brown bags and simply rolled closed at the top then you are buying beans that are far from a high quality experience. Also when a bean is ground up it exposes the coffee particles to oxygen and no matter how sealed you keep your beans they will taste stale.  So that means beans should only be ground right before consumption.

So we know our beans should only be bought within the three week period after roasting, should be kept refrigerator cool, and should be kept in as airtight of a container as possible. Now when you next go to one of the coffee outlets in the Idaho Falls area i want you to use you new found science knowledge to make an essment of the coffee you are about to buy.  Does the coffee shop keep their beans cool, are they in air tight containers and are they fresh roasted. If you follow these basics guidelines when buying coffee beans you will enhance your experience and your taste buds will rejoice.

CoolThe Villa downtown in IF is by far the best in my opinion, plus I love the aromas when visiting. Very relaxed atmosphere as well.

I would say i have to agree with everything Joon said.  I have personally been to all the "coffee shops" in the idaho Falls area and Dancing Dogs takes the cake. It really isn't just that each cup of coffee is fresh roasted and brewed and tastes like heaven.  it has more to do with the staff and atmospere.  The barristas there can asnwer pretty much any question I have about coffee.  And when i am having a indesisive day i can just say make me something with chocolate and out comes a wonderful creation. I spend everyday reading or studying something about coffee because I love it so much and being able to go toa place where they actually know what they are doing and talking about rather than trained by some corperate manual is a priceless affair.

In other news, if you are just looking for coffee to go and don;t really care about taste then I would go with the Java Expresses over any other coffee shack. They are consistent and generaly you don;lt want to spit it out.  Of course put enough sugar, cream and mother flavors in a drink and even turpintine can even taste decent.

The Villia in downtown has nice atmosphere and ok food but they are tad overpriced and they use stale coffee beans.

Snakebite in downtown has great atmosphere and food but their coffee gets the lowest rating of coffees I have drank in IF town. A shot of espresso looks like drip coffee, has no creama, is overly bitter and I think they are using flavored beans to make it. Big no-no.  Their regular cup of drip is worth a try.

Starbucks = Regular drip is often stale, cheap beans that are dark roasted to cover up the fact that Starbucks doesn;t care about taste anymore. Their espresso is suprisingly good although i have yet to find a Starbucks barista who knows anything outside of what is taught from the cooperate manual.

Great Harvest Bread Store down town. Drip coffee is just fine. The espresso machine seems more like an afterthought rather than something they are really focused on doing correctly. The actual espresso is drinkable and is better than the Villa and Snakebite but not as good as Starbucks or Dancing Dogs. The best thing about here is a free slice of bread with your coffee :)

There is a lot more to be said about coffee in IF but above are my initial and abreveated thoughts.  So just as a recap and summary

1-poor  2- Fine 3-Average  4-Above Average 5- Exceptional

1. Dancing dogs- Staff-5, Atmosphere-4, Food-3, Drip Coffee-5+, Espresso-5+

2. Villia- Staff-3, Atmosphere-4, Food-3, Drip Coffee-3, Espresso-2

3.Starbucks- Staff-3, Atmosphere-2, Food-4, Drip Coffee-3, Espresso-3

4. Great Harvest- Staff-3, Atmosphere-3, Food-4, Drip Coffee-4, Espresso-3

5. Snake Bite- Staff-2, Atmosphere-4, Food-5, Drip Coffee-3, Espresso-1

More to come.

my apologies Joon!  you DID spell it right after all.  (don't I look like an idiot)  For some reason, the site won't allow you to write  "a s s o c i a t e d" because of the 1st three letters.  That's happened to me in the chatbox before.

Again….my apologies.

Joon,

I'm not sure if you meant "ociated" for "ociated".  I'm not trying to pick apart your spelling, i was just wondering.  :)

Thank you for your input.  I've never heard of "Dancing Dogs" before and being that I'm a huge coffee lover, I am going to give them a try this weekend.  It's very difficult to find true Kona brand coffee in this town and I'm happy to hear that you guys offer it there.

As for your last paragraph about being a "regular poster", it seems to me that you've been posting quite regularly on a number of topics over the past month or so, so please don't be bashful and give us your point of view on the other "sit down" places.  I think we'd all like to hear somebody who's "in the biz" point of view.

Thanks again for your input and welcome to the site.  It's always nice to get new and different view points on the variety of topics here at Idaho Falls Today.

Disclaimer up front: I am very directly ociated with my recommendation, but that is not why I am recommending it.

In my mind, there are only two sit-down style places to *really* get coffee that's worth anything at all in Idaho Falls: Dancing Dogs Coffeehouse and the Villa House.

If, however, you're looking for a drive-up style cup of good joe, then the Grind on 17th isn't bad, the Koka Moka (sp?) took their time finding a smooth blend for their espresso drinks, and … I can't remember the name of it now…but the shack on 1st street and across from Arctic Circle might be the only shack in town that sells truly fresh-roasted coffee.

I will *try* to be objective, but (big but) even before my ociation with the place, I concluded that hands down the best place is Dancing Dogs Coffeehouse (email me at summon(dot)dice @ gmail(dot)com if you would like directions or the address…I'm trying not to advertise so I won't put the address or link to our site or anything, but the topic happens to be very directly related so not saying anything is also difficult!). We roast all of the coffee we use ourselves, and won't sell it to consumers outside of 2 weeks (that's when coffee begins to lose it's pizazz) – last I knew, no other coffeehouse in the area can make that claim, including Star Bucks and the Villa.

Dancing Dogs also offers free wi-fi and very comfortable, homey arrangements. If "pretentious" just isn't your thing, you will probably like Dancing Dogs better than the other two sit-down options.

Also…we know our stuff. We know, for example, that if you order a caramel macchiato from us, that you go to Starbucks often enough to have been told that that's a macchiato (it isn't, for the record). We know that coffee straight out of the roaster is good, but wait three days – it will be best. We know that most people who "grew up" with Folgers like their coffee dark-roasted, and often they like it at French Espresso dark. We also know that most beans find their potential at a mid-city plus roast.

We know that Yemen and Kenyan beans are sweeter than Sumatran and Guatemalan beans. Oh, and we can probably get the best straight Kona price in town, and we get it directly from the farmer we're in contact with. Which reminds me…we're not Fair Trade, we're better: Farm Gate. The company we get our beans from sends someone directly to the farms or co-ops themselves and buys beans directly from the farm or co-op themselves. We also aren't "officially" organic…but to be honest, it's difficult *not* to be with regards to coffee.

And I think I'm gettin off track, though that does remind me of the other question: What blends do we like and what preperation.

I've had *a lot* of coffee. Probably my absolute favorite drink is a shot in the dark with a Kenya single origin bean taken to a just barely still-too-sweet mid-city as drip with a shot of any "dull" espresso.

For just straight coffee…I dont' think I could pick. There is a Rwanda bean that is delicious by itself or with anything else, and Sumatra is the same way, but a little duller. I like heavier coffees for just straight coffee.

And while I would be chastized for not saying "french press" or "siphon" for method…I have to admit that I like just regularly brewed coffee for method – though admittedly I prefer that the brewer not leave a nasty taste with the coffee…

If I were a regular poster, I would tell you why I wouldn't go to the other two sit-down places, but because of conflicts of interest I will simply say that the Dancing Dogs is in nearly all ways the best sit-down (and to-go, if you're in the area) option around. It's location is the only turn-off I can think of.

Hope that helps! :)

In your opinion, who serves the best coffee in Idaho Falls or the immediate area? What is your favorite blend or method of preparation?
