Going online to find things to do around Idaho Falls

by Joe Vandal December 18, 2006

This is the fifth installment of a series published every Monday called “IF Online”. Each article will examine an aspect of our Idaho Falls area that has an online presence. This week I will examine Idaho Falls’ online events calenders.
Creating an ultimate local events calendar was about the tenth idea I had when designing IdahoFallz.com. [...]

Keyboard Shortcuts Are Path to Tech Expertise

by Joe Vandal December 15, 2006

I often get to help others with computers. I have to quickly size up their technology experience, because it determines the depth of instructions I give. I will have a different conversation with someone clearly experienced with technology than the conversation with someone who clearly is holding the mouse for the first time.

Believe it [...]

by Joe Vandal December 8, 2006

I want to express my sincere and deep appreciation for the thousands of comments you all leave in response to the published articles at IdahoFallz.com. Those comments generate many great discussions here. People sometimes ask me why I put so much time into fostering this online community, and one of them is the excitement I [...]

How you can return to anonymity

by Joe Vandal December 1, 2006

I really enjoy the new “users online” display in our chatbox. Before, I had to run a separate script to show how many visitors we had at any time and who was on, and you had to click a link to see the information. Now we see current visitor information displayed conveniently and concisely.

However, it [...]

This week I will suggest improvements to our official city website. A previous article also [...]

You don’t have to be a geek to enjoy podcasts

by Joe Vandal November 17, 2006

You do not need an iPod to enjoy podcasts! I have to say that quick and loud right up front, because unfortunately most people hear ‘podcast’ and assume it’s only usable with an iPod or MP3 player, which is not the case at all.
Podcasts are free video and audio files available for easy download. You [...]

Give me thirty seconds and I will give you IE tabs in Firefox

by Joe Vandal November 10, 2006

Firefox is the superior browser to Internet Explorer (IE) 6 or 7, but occasionally some websites have particular code that only works in IE. Those sites are few and far between, but they do complicate the browsing experience by forcing you to launch IE instead of another Firefox tab.
For example, I can use Yahoo! [...]

Idaho Electronic Voting Considerations

by Joe Vandal November 7, 2006

I’ve read many stories the last couple years about electronic voting technology. HBO’s Special Hacking Democracy on aired Sunday and is available to watch for free on Google Video. It is a great expose of the problems with this early technology, and how the electronic voting machine companies are covering up the shortfalls.

I recently saw [...]

How Idaho Falls can foster a Silicon Valley economy

by Joe Vandal November 6, 2006

I recently read an article about how your town could make itself into a Silicon Valley. The emphasis was on fostering a technology-startup economy that generates lots of cash and tourists. Wouldn’t it be nice if Idaho Falls could cultivate an environment that generated lots of startup companies, with the cash and tourist boom following?

The [...]

Firefox 2’s built-in spellchecker is great for blogging

by Joe Vandal November 3, 2006

Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 were both released a week or so ago. IE7 is pushed as an automatic update from Microsoft, so the number of people switching to that is significant and growing. You can get Firefox 2 for free with a small download at Mozilla.org It takes just a couple minutes to [...]

Quickly scale your text

by Joe Vandal October 27, 2006

I have a quick but powerful technology tip this week: how to quickly scale your text larger and smaller. This works great in your web browser and in Microsoft Word, and you do not have to dig through any pull-down menus, either.

All you have to do is hold the “Control” key down on your keyboard [...]

Introducing Whisper Feature

by Joe Vandal October 22, 2006

We have launched a new feature on IdahoFallz.com called “Whisper”.
This feature enables registered site users to leave comments for specific other registered site users, and prevents the general population from reading those comments. Hence, one user may “whisper” to another user without anyone else reading it.

Users may whisper to each other by leaving a comment [...]

Prevent Windows XP Update from Auto Restarts

by Joe Vandal October 20, 2006

I’m glad Microsoft is frequently administering Windows XP with automatic updates, it generally makes for a more secure and less glitchy computer. I get frustrated, though, when I leave my computer with several browser tabs and documents open, and return later to find Windows Update automatically restarted my computer. I know the updates are important, [...]

Fee-free way to ditch your cell phone contract

by Joe Vandal October 12, 2006

I hate cellphones. The call quality is horrible, calls get dropped too often, the price per minute is comparatively sky-high, the terms are lopsided in favor of the carriers, and they seem to encourage horrendous manners from many users.

One of the universal terms that are lopsided against the consumer is the handset charge vs. contract [...]

How to Write Articles: Advanced Information

by Joe Vandal September 25, 2006

This online community is designed to be a reflection of our Idaho Falls community. We host lots of discussion activity via the chatbox and comment responses to articles. This series will help more people make the transition from reacting to published stories to writing stories themselves (which then generate comment responses).
The more people who write [...]

How You Can Help Find Idaho’s Missing Persons

by Joe Vandal September 14, 2006

I read in this morning’s Post Register that today is Missing Persons Day. I can only imagine how difficult these cases are for the families involved, not having closure. The rest of us are left with creepy feelings and speculating what might have happened.
There is actually a way you can help solve missing persons cases! [...]

The Evolution of Video Advertising

by Joe Vandal August 23, 2006

I’m surprised to see some businesses still using traditional 30-second television advertisements. My surprise is due to ever-decreasing television viewership pitted against the inexplicably ever-increasing television advertising costs.

Even when television is watched anymore, DVR/Tivo technologies allow viewers to easily skip past the commercials. My household has two televisions and a DVR on each set; [...]

Restaurants can mitigate waits with cellphones

by Joe Vandal August 22, 2006

One reason I like Texas Roadhouse is the call-ahead feature. On a busy night you can call them 20 minutes ahead of arriving, and when you arrive you only have to wait a couple minutes. It’s nice to waltz into a restaurant and be seated seemingly ahead of those suckers waiting in the lobby for [...]

Qwest is slowest broadband provider

by Joe Vandal August 21, 2006

PC Magazine recently released rankings on broadband ISP speeds. I generally disregard these rankings because they usually rely on user opinions of their speeds. My ears perked up when I heard on the Cranky Geeks podcast how this ranking was based on actual calculated data.
PC Mag offered a small utility called SurfSpeed that calculated [...]

Yes you can almost always get satellite installed

by Joe Vandal August 16, 2006

Feel stuck with cable because your homeowner’s covenants prevent you from getting a satellite dish? Mad at your landlord who won’t allow you to get a satellite dish?
It turns out that homeowner’s covenants that forbid you from installing satellite dishes are almost always illegal. Read the FCC rules and tell that homeowner’s association control freak [...]
