Concealed Weapons…Catnip For The Paranoid

Thumbnail image for Concealed Weapons…Catnip For The Paranoid by Clarence Worly January 19, 2010

Anyone with an IQ above room temperature knows we would all be safer as a society with fewer firearms. The problem is, short of kicking in the doors of every citizen (law abiding and criminal) in the United States and forcibly retrieving these guns, there is no way in hell to control or regulate the [...]

Today in History: Pearl Harbor attacked

Thumbnail image for Today in History: Pearl Harbor attacked by Guest Writer December 7, 2009

December 7, 1941
At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The [...]

(submitted by Olie)
An Idaho Falls man was just awarded nearly $2 MILLION in a recent lawsuit.  KPVI  reported that Levon Babakhanian was just awarded $1.8 million in a lawsuit involving a traffic accident he was involved in three years ago.  Babkhanian was on a motorcycle in Bonneville County when he ran into a dump truck [...]

Thumbnail image for Post Register Gives Near Glowing Review of Daren Palmer, The Man Accused Of Running A Ponzi Scheme And Defrauding Millions by For The People November 9, 2009

The Post Register appeared to honor the man accused of running a Ponzi Scheme in Southeast Idaho in a front-page article Sunday entitled “Daren Palmer: Revealed”. About three-fourths of the article that ran as the feature storywent through Daren Palmer’s life holding him up and honoring him instead of bringing to light the background [...]

Post Register Newspaper – Can It Survive?

Thumbnail image for Post Register Newspaper – Can It Survive? by Guest Writer November 4, 2009

The Post Register has been the de-facto print news source for years in southeast Idaho. They have touted themselves as the second largest newspaper in Idaho. It is likely one of the oldest media sources in Idaho. Now it looks as though the newspaper may be falling behind, losing out to fresher, [...]

According to the Associated Press,  new laws passed in the state of North Carolina last year made it illegal for a convicted sex offender named James Nichols to attend worship services at his Baptist church due to the presence of a daycare facility on the grounds.  On March 28, 2009, he was arrested at his [...]

The Idaho Stalker Strikes in Idaho Falls!

by Joe Eagle October 6, 2008

Submitted by Jo Larwood
It is early evening.  I’m in my little home, in my tiny village, in the county of Norfolk, UK, which is part of a community that peppers across a five mile area of arable farm land.  I’m within spitting distance of the coast and North Sea.  I’ve just [...]

Are there any ghosts in town?

by boomer August 31, 2008

I don’t know if I believe in ghosts, but I know some folks who do.
I hung out for a while with a family who lived outside of Raleigh, N. Carolina who all believed their old farm house was haunted. They were all smart and sane, and all of ‘em had their individual experiences with the [...]

Taylor’s Toll Bridge in Idaho Falls – What’s Underneath?

by Guest Writer August 26, 2008

We’re new-ish to the area, and stopped by the Green Belt / Riverside area for the first time today.  We followed some trails and ended up under the Taylor’s Toll Bridge.  There were all of these funny little rock water paths ending (?) in a circular, shallow pool, and then long channel things beyond that.
I’m [...]

How you can help solve the 1996 Angie Dodge murder

by Joe Vandal March 24, 2008

We are going to solve Idaho Falls‘ 1996 Angie Raye Dodge murder. This is an extremely ambitious goal, but solving this murder is vital for a local family to get closure, for our community to finally know what happened, and possibly to expose official misdeeds at that time. The stakes are high to solve the [...]

Should We Rebuild the Teton Dam?

by Joe Vandal March 21, 2008

I could not believe the news that our Idaho legislature has appropriated $400,000 to study whether the infamous Teton Dam should be rebuilt. The Teton Dam collapse and subsequent flood was the worst disaster ever in southeast Idaho’s modern recorded history. Five southeast Idaho counties were declared federal disaster areas by President Gerald Ford. I’m [...]

Japanese Temple/Shrine in Idaho Falls

by dnix0112 July 13, 2007

Much how other cities in the country have a China Town, Idaho Falls could have a Japanese themed area with the centerpiece being a Japanese temple.
Most know that Idaho Falls is the sister city to Tokai-Mura, Japan. Most also know that Idaho Falls and East Idaho were home to concentration camps for Japanese citizens during [...]

Idaho Water: History, Players, Conflicts, and Potential Shutdowns

by Joe Vandal May 24, 2007

It’s probably long overdue to start a discussion on Idaho water issues. Concerns over Idaho water have prevalent my entire life in Idaho, and it’s not something many people understand completely. We barely dodged a widespread water shutdown here in the upper Snake River valley today, but future shutdowns are possible and probable if solutions [...]

Why the angst between Ammon and Idaho Falls?

by Joe Vandal April 19, 2007

It seems there is some underlying angst between residents and city governments of Idaho Falls and Ammon. For outsiders or those new to the area, Ammon historically was pretty much a suburb of Idaho Falls, tucked into our southeast corner. When you cross over from the Grand Teton Mall to say the Target store area, [...]

How You Can Help Find Idaho’s Missing Persons

by Joe Vandal September 14, 2006

I read in this morning’s Post Register that today is Missing Persons Day. I can only imagine how difficult these cases are for the families involved, not having closure. The rest of us are left with creepy feelings and speculating what might have happened.
There is actually a way you can help solve missing persons cases! [...]

Taylor Crossing Unveils Largest Bronze Eagles

by Joe Vandal August 27, 2006

I enjoyed the (hopefully first annual?) Taylor Crossing Summer Days yesterday.
It was nice that they not only did an public art enveiling, they also had a full day’s free festivities for the public. My kid really enjoyed the blow-up castles and activity centers.
The girl that sang the star-spangled banner was one of the [...]

Free Yellow Bikes

by Joe Vandal August 16, 2006

I recall in 1997 a group in Idaho Falls introduced a free bicycle program.
The idea was if you saw one, you were free to ride around Idaho Falls on it, and you just left it unlocked for someone else to pick up and use also. I recall local bike shops were willing to do [...]

Is there a good ol’ boy network controlling Idaho Falls?

by Joe Vandal July 24, 2006

I’ve heard the phrase all my life in television, movies, print, and around town. The phrase has come up quite a few times recently in conversations on IdahoFallz.com and around Idaho Falls. We may as well bring it out to the light:
Is there a good ol’ boy network controlling Idaho Falls?
I found a Wikipedia entry [...]

Teton Dam Flood Brought Best Out of Idaho Falls Residents

by Joe Vandal May 25, 2006

There is plenty of great media coverage lately on the thirtieth-anniversary of the Teton Dam collapse and flood.

I want to just focus on the Idaho Falls aspect of the Teton Dam flood. I always heard Idaho Falls was somehow spared major damage, but Local News 8 had a great quote from T.J. Wadsworth who [...]

Watch 4th of July Fireworks from Keefer Island, Idaho Falls

by Joe Vandal May 10, 2006

Poor Keefer Island sits unused and seemingly unwanted in Idaho Falls‘ Snake River stretch. The city used to shoot our fireworks off from the north end of the island. When Frank took over with with the awesome Melaleuca Freedom Celebration, he deployed so many fireworks as to outgrow the island space and they have been [...]

Embers of local angst against Post Register still burn hot

by Official Stench May 7, 2006

Noticed today the Post Register vs. Boy Scouts vs. Kim Hansen vs. Frank Vandersloot is flaming up again. The full community page dominated on page A5, and Kathy Stanger tore into the Post Register on the next page Opinions. The Post Register was ripping on Kim Hansen still leading the local Scouts after questions were [...]
