Happy Veterans Day!!!
Quick Summary: Ok here’s the Skippy- Write a decent post this month and a donation will be made to support the troops. The writing must be unique and not found anywhere else online. Throughout November 2009, when you write an interesting post (as many of you have been anyway) to IdahoFallsToday.com,  I’ll personally [...]

Is Idaho ready for legal marijuana?

by slu2 May 18, 2009

On May 13th in the “Boise Weekly” there was an article ran about the 300 person crowd at the state capitol for the “Global Marijuana March”.
Ref:  http://www.boiseweekly.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A323768
I have been saying this for a long time, I believe that Idaho will be the 14th state for legalizing marijuana in one way or another.  However, it looks [...]

Paper Checks Belong to a Bygone Era

by geekery April 24, 2008

I saw the flier when I walked into Smitty’s recently, and I read the message, but it did not hit me until I read it again when paying our bill and leaving. The Idaho Falls Smitty’s restaurant will no longer accept personal or business checks!
I think it did not register in my mind at [...]

Kudos to Officer Kenny Yellen

by Joe Vandal January 28, 2008

I think kudos are in order for Police Officer Kenny Yellen. I realize this happened down in Montpelier, but I want to highlight the important story that does not seem to have been widely reported.
This is the case where Kevin Buttars (who used to serve in our local Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office) was accused of [...]

Kudos to Idaho Falls Snow Removal Workers

by Joe Vandal December 27, 2007

This is a couple days late, but I still wanted to give a big thank you to all the folks who have been working so hard at clearing the huge snowfall Idaho Falls received.
The snow began falling on Christmas Eve day, and some of those workers were already out clearing our roads. Christmas Day [...]

Idaho Falls 2007 Fourth of July Festivities

by Joe Vandal July 5, 2007

Another Fourth of July has come and passed Idaho Falls, and I think our city did a great job with this year’s festivities. Kudos to the thousands of people who worked behind the scenes to make all these great events. I hope a congratulatory picnic for those people can be arranged, we should thank them [...]

Kudos for Donating New Idaho Falls Park along Snake River

by Joe Vandal June 29, 2007

I could not tell from the PR article if it was the local Smith (Automotive) Group or a person by the name of Smith that donated the land for our new city park, but I think that was awesome for them to do that.
The land is described as on the west bank, just north of [...]

Kudos to Post Register’s Mr. Harvard

by Joe Vandal May 25, 2007

I read yesterday morning about the Post Register’s executive editor, Dean Miller, winning a year-long Nieman fellowship to Harvard.
I thought about it all day yesterday, and I think kudos are in order for Dean Miller. Whether you agree or disagree with him or his organization, you’ve got to admit that is quite an achievement.

A [...]

Open Mike for Idaho Falls City Workers March 2007

by Joe Vandal March 1, 2007

We republish this open forum for Idaho Falls city workers on the first day of each month. The July article for city workers was one of our most commented-on articles ever. Last month’s open mike thread also generated some healthy discussion.
This monthly open forum is a vehicle for city workers (or anyone with knowledge of [...]

Fred Ochi Tribute in Idaho Falls

by Joe Vandal February 28, 2007

I propose we create a tribute to the recently departed Fred Ochi. He has been one of the most positive forces in Idaho Falls for decades, and Idaho Falls should honor that.
Would it be a statue of him on the greenbelt?

An outdoor studio scene?
A small park designed as Fred Ochi would have wanted, [...]

Idaho Falls People Respond to River Accident!

by Kerry Shirts February 20, 2007

It was not only astonishing to see how our now local celebrity (the lady who drove off the street, across the greenbelt, through the bushes, onto the ice of the Snake River here in town, across the river, and over the falls(!), got in her wreck, but also how fast and how many Idaho Falls [...]

Evidence of Idaho’s Christmas Spirit

by Joe Vandal December 5, 2006

I am buffeted by advice that this site should focus on more positive stories. I like to point out most anyone is free to register and publish positive stories on their own, so long as it is locally interesting.
Most everyone is also free to leave positive comments in some of the more positively-oriented articles, [...]

KPVI 6 Reporter Suzanne Hobbs on the Oprah show

by Joe Vandal November 8, 2006

I was surprised to see a local reporter on the Oprah show and not see or hear a mention in our local media. KPVI Channel 6 reporter Suzanne Hobbs was featured for about four minutes during Oprah’s November 3, 2006 show on teen mothers who kill their newborn babies.
Footage was shown from the infamous [...]

Congratulations Idaho Fallz.Com and Joe Vandal !

by Ok4Now October 1, 2006

Since Joe started this site in Oct 2005, I want to be among the first to congratulate him on a job very well done. Think of the many ways we’ve communicated about different subjects that perhaps many of us wouldn’t have done previously. And, it has been great to see users talking to each other, [...]

Bravo Mayor, Bravo!

by dnix0112 September 27, 2006

It has only been a short while since Jared Furhiman took over the mayoral duties of our fair city, but I for one think he has done a very nice job. In a short amount of time he has been able to stitch closed a couple of bleeding wounds. By wounds I mean projects that [...]

Taylor Crossing Unveils Largest Bronze Eagles

by Joe Vandal August 27, 2006

I enjoyed the (hopefully first annual?) Taylor Crossing Summer Days yesterday.
It was nice that they not only did an public art enveiling, they also had a full day’s free festivities for the public. My kid really enjoyed the blow-up castles and activity centers.
The girl that sang the star-spangled banner was one of the [...]

Above and beyond employee appreciation

by Joe Vandal August 12, 2006

I called our local Valley Glass a couple years ago to inquire when an order would arrive and be installed. I was surprised when the guy told me it could not be installed for two weeks because all the employees were going on a cruise the next week. I laughed and congratulated the guy for [...]

Kudos to Idaho Falls media in clearing reputation

by BuddhAllahrist June 21, 2006

It was nice to see two local news media, the Post Register and KIFI TV 8, prominently report that Idaho Falls airport director Mike Humberd was cleared of any wrongdoing in a sexual harrassment investigation. The investigation was widely reported when it first broke, but rarely do media follow up with findings of innocence, especially [...]

Seanelle Hanson shares lemonade

by BuddhAllahrist June 20, 2006

What an inspiration Seanelle Hanson is to our community! As the Post Register reported, her teen son Zakk drowned in our stretch of the Snake River last summer. Rather than lose herself in pity, she fundraised $50,000 for three county search and rescue teams. That is a lot of money! Apparently the rescuers searched for [...]

Peter Zuckerman wins national award for Scout’s Honor

by the VP June 5, 2006

Peter Zuckerman was reported to have won a prestigious $10,000 award for his Scout’s Honor story that stirred up so much angst in southeast Idaho. None other than the famous Charles Gibson (ABC News) presented the Livingston Award to Zuckerman, who is one of the youngest journalists to ever receive the award.
What are the Livingston [...]

Post Register profiles those who overcome adversity

by the VP May 24, 2006

I wanted to give kudos to our local Post Register for the local student stories they profile all year round, and especially at graduation time. Yesterday I admired how Bonneville senior Raul Carreno is graduating high school but couldn’t speak any English just two years ago. Today I admired how Idaho Falls senior Tony Jenkins [...]

Embers of local angst against Post Register still burn hot

by Official Stench May 7, 2006

Noticed today the Post Register vs. Boy Scouts vs. Kim Hansen vs. Frank Vandersloot is flaming up again. The full community page dominated on page A5, and Kathy Stanger tore into the Post Register on the next page Opinions. The Post Register was ripping on Kim Hansen still leading the local Scouts after questions were [...]

Why Idaho Falls needs Taylor Crossing

by Joe Vandal March 2, 2006

What separates New York City from Idaho Falls, Idaho? Besides 8 million people and a more balanced ethnic population, NYC has mixed-used urban development. This means that residential spaces are built next door to or on top of retail and office spaces.

Idaho Falls’ downtown has failed and continues to fail due to the lack of [...]

KIDK Channel 3 Spotlights 911 Abusers

by the VP March 1, 2006

I’ve ripped on Channel 3 for some poor decisions they made before, so I thought I’d balance that with a kudos to them for their recent series on idiots who misuse our 911 system. Unfortunately, KIDK hasn’t caught up with the idea of putting your video content online yet.
I’ll make a harsh suggestion (along the [...]

Perverted-Justice.com Nabbed Idaho Falls Pervert

by Joe Vandal February 14, 2006

Here’s a heart-warming Valentine’s Day story. It involves an Idaho Falls guy who used his boss’ Internet connection to prey on underage girls for sex. Fortunately for our society, a proactive website exists that exposes these jerks. The site is perverted-justice.com, and they have even been featured on NBC’s Dateline for their effectiveness against sexual [...]
