Legislative update from Rep. Janice McGeachin (R-32A)

Thumbnail image for Legislative update from Rep. Janice McGeachin (R-32A) by Guest Writer February 23, 2010

Dear Friends and Neighbors:
By passing HJM9, the Idaho House pushed back against growing federal power by asserting state sovereignty.  The House voted to condemn major portions of the Clean Water Restoration Act that is pending before the U.S. Senate, agreeing with Representative Raybould (R-Rexburg) that the legislation pending in Congress would have “drastic” negative effects [...]

This week the discussions about budget setting and state revenues continue.  Last week the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee (JFAC) set the final FY2010 and FY2011 budget numbers.  The FY2010 budget number was the final decision made by JFAC when considering the original appropriation, and the holdbacks that had been [...]

As most of you know (I found out from Alice by her alert in the chatbox) the Wells Fargo Bank on Skyline/Broadway in Idaho Falls was robbed a couple days ago on Wednesday afternoon December 30.
From KPVI Channel 6: “Police, who roped off the area shortly after the robbery say the subject is described as [...]

Would you support a tax cut?

Thumbnail image for Would you support a tax cut? by Joe Plumber December 13, 2009

Today (12/13/2009), the Associated Press reorted that “Idaho Republicans are pushing to cut individual and corporate income taxes by more than a third over the next decade, saying it would lure businesses and pump life into the slumping state economy. Their plan would cut Idaho’s corporate income tax rate of 7.6 percent and the individual [...]

Playing the lottery…

by Guest Writer December 8, 2009

There is a pretty obvious reason why buying lottery tickets is a bad idea. You will lose money. The odds are usually just awful. Casino gambling is, in comparison, a comparatively sound investment.
And, of course, casino gambling is not a wise thing to do with your savings. You would have to be off the deep [...]

Free Market Economics

by Chick Heileson December 4, 2009
Thumbnail image for Free Market Economics

About a month ago, the Federal Reserve announced its goal to grasp even more control over the banking industry by seeking veto power over the pay policies of any bank of its choosing.  We already know about the many bailouts and “stimulus” packages passed by Congress within the last year.  If the solution to our [...]

“Insuring” Good Health

Thumbnail image for “Insuring” Good Health by Chick Heileson December 2, 2009

As Congress currently debates a massive government overhaul of our nation’s healthcare system, it seems a fundamental question is being left out of the debate: “Does the federal government have any right to discuss how to manage your personal health?”
The current administration is pushing for a government-run plan that will compete with private insurance plans. [...]

Should states have the right to determine their own budgets?

Thumbnail image for Should states have the right to determine their own budgets? by Joe Plumber December 2, 2009

Earlier this week, I read an interesting article by Rebecca Boone of the Associated Press. The article, published in the local paper, Post Register, caught my eye with the title Idaho health providers seek to increase scope of lawsuit.
As I read the article, I found it interesting that “a group of private agencies” that [...]

Ski Season! Buying a pass? Where’s the best place to hit the slopes?

Thumbnail image for Ski Season! Buying a pass? Where’s the best place to hit the slopes? by Guest Writer November 14, 2009

We are welcomed today with a fresh blanket of snow, and a much anticipated ski season approaching, there’s a question for some if they’re going to spend the hundreds of dollars necessary for a season ski pass, or back off a bit this year.
The answer to that question will likely have something to do with [...]

Christmas Shopping in a Broke New World

Thumbnail image for Christmas Shopping in a Broke New World by Alice November 13, 2009

It seems that the previous media doom and gloom has given way to a slew of stories that can’t seem to make up their minds. One says things are looking up, one says things are getting worse. One story scares us with a 10% unemployment rate, and the next claims that new jobs are being [...]

Obama has been scrambling to clean up a struggling U.S. economy, save the auto industry and banking industry, and provide better health care across the board for all United States Citizens. He faces uphill battles in several of these areas with opposition from republicans, radio talk show hosts, and opponents to health care reform. [...]

The questionable and irresponsible spending habits of the Idaho Falls City Council.

Thumbnail image for The questionable and irresponsible spending habits of the Idaho Falls City Council. by The Gadsden October 20, 2009

The local political chatter around here and town sure seems quite. Aside from a few campaign signs here and there for the various city council races, you wouldn’t guess that an election is just around the corner.
In exactly two weeks, we have the opportunity to vote for who will represent our interests and values at [...]

The Bio-Life Experience

Ever since the whole Bio-life “we’ll pay you for your bodily fluids” thing started, I’ve wanted to donate and make some extra spending money. For some reason I’ve just never gotten around to it.
I hear that the people do the actual poking aren’t phlebotomists or pre-trained in any way (they train them after they are [...]

KUPI 99 Needs to Grow Up – Idaho Falls Radio

Thumbnail image for KUPI 99 Needs to Grow Up – Idaho Falls Radio by JP October 6, 2009

Twice in the last few days I’ve heard a radio advertisement on KUPI 99 that goes something like this:
We’re KUPI 99. What makes us better than the other guys?
That’s easy. We’re not d—–bags.
Except without the dashes.
I understand radio stations have their little tiffs with one another. Currently, 1055 the Hawk chides “the other guys” for [...]

Newspapers, the next bailout?

by Neal Larson September 21, 2009

The Hill has been reporting this weekend that President Obama may be open to bailing out the newspaper industry. A bill in the Senate would offer government help to newspapers that re-organize as non-profits. We know that the Post Register has had their financial struggles — like most other newspapers across the country– and I’d [...]

How expensive is it really to raise children?

by my4sons August 26, 2009

I just recently read an article on MSN called “Raising your $221,000 baby.”
“Typical families, those making from $56,870 to $98,470 a year, will spend a whopping $221,190 to raise a second child born in 2008 through age 17, estimates the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (.pdf file), a division of the U.S. [...]

Okay, go to Gasbuddy.com or drive from Idaho Falls to Pocatello and you will see that Idaho Falls average Gas prices are $2.59 but in Pocatello they are $2.49. Why are two towns that are affected by the same weather, economy etc… that have a $.10 price difference. I think Idaho Falls is price gouging. This needs [...]

Where’s the justice? Are our judges too soft on crime? Is the judicial system broken?

by Joe Plumber May 20, 2009

IDAHO FALLS – A local woman, Brooke Armstrong, 34, was sentenced this week to four months in jail and eight years probation for stealing more than $150,000 from three area businesses.
Four months, and that’s it? I cannot believe how light her sentence was! In addition to the jail time and probation, prosecutors are requesting [...]
