Christmas Shopping in a Broke New World

Thumbnail image for Christmas Shopping in a Broke New World by Alice November 13, 2009

It seems that the previous media doom and gloom has given way to a slew of stories that can’t seem to make up their minds. One says things are looking up, one says things are getting worse. One story scares us with a 10% unemployment rate, and the next claims that new jobs are being [...]

Insane Clown Posse Show Cancelled… Discussion Imminent.

Thumbnail image for Insane Clown Posse Show Cancelled… Discussion Imminent. by Alice November 5, 2009

I just read in the PR that the Insane Clown Posse concert has been canceled.
My first reaction was not surprise, it was actually a smirk while I recalled a similar concert held a couple of years ago by a band called Kottonmouth Kings. That concert, by a band (IMO) whose sole purpose is to promote [...]

The Bio-Life Experience

Thumbnail image for The Bio-Life Experience by Alice October 9, 2009

Ever since the whole Bio-life “we’ll pay you for your bodily fluids” thing started, I’ve wanted to donate and make some extra spending money. For some reason I’ve just never gotten around to it.
I hear that the people do the actual poking aren’t phlebotomists or pre-trained in any way (they train them after they are [...]

Why Did Local Schools Opt-out of the Obama Speech?

Thumbnail image for Why Did Local Schools Opt-out of the Obama Speech? by Alice September 17, 2009

I’m curious why the local schools chose to opt-out of the Obama speech? At first, it just seemed counter-productive to me to miss a great chance for in-class dialogue and debate, or discussion at home. No matter what he was talking about, I couldn’t fathom that it could be so bad that school kids, his intended audience, shouldn’t be allowed to hear it. I also worried that it would make Idaho, once again, look backward and uninformed, but I didn’t know if schools in other states had opted out of the speech.

Driving While Texting/Talking vs. Drinking and Driving

Thumbnail image for Driving While Texting/Talking vs. Drinking and Driving by Alice September 3, 2009

Just curious to see where people stand on this issue.
Statistics say that driving while on a cell phone or, even worse, texting, is more dangerous than drunk driving. Before you ask, no, I don’t have a link for these statistics, and I’m prepared to hear about it.
Don’t think for a minute that I am condoning [...]

Why should we buy auto insurance?

by Alice June 29, 2009

A week and a half ago, my boyfriend was riding his motorcycle down 17th street when an uninsured driver pulled in front of him and caused an accident. Luckily, my boyfriend only suffered a laceration over his eyebrow (requiring several stitches) and damage to his motorcycle. The driver of the car told the officer that [...]

School is out and the kids are bored… what now?

by Alice June 19, 2009

It seems that we need some ideas on ways to keep our kids busy this summer. We all know that busy kids get in less trouble. Let’s post some ideas here. Anyone who has raised kids has probably got some inventive ideas.
Both of my kids were working summers with locally owned restaurants when they were [...]

Vandalism in the name of morality.

by Alice June 4, 2009

I read a story today about a topless coffee shop in Maine that was burned to the ground Wednesday. Authorities said it was obvious that this was arson. I had read other stories before about people that were very unhappy about this particular establishment’s existence.
Reading this story reminded me of a discussion that we have [...]

New Grand Teton pathway, and wildlife.

by Alice June 4, 2009

I read a story in the PR this morning regarding a new pathway from Moose Jct. to Jenny Lake. It sounds like a good thing, I’m all for more ways to enjoy the outdoors without the worry of becoming roadkill.
There was one thing that made me wonder though. The article states that no pets are [...]

Parking Spaces for “Green” Vehicles

by Alice May 18, 2009

As the weather gets nicer I notice more and more scooters and motorcycles out (including mine). I also notice that there are several parking spaces taken up by these vehicles.
I propose smaller parking spaces, placed close to destinations, to reward people who are driving smaller “greener” vehicles. This would also free-up spaces for cars, as [...]

How much personal information is too much?

by Alice May 11, 2009

There seems to be a lot of concern on this board lately about too much personal information being available.
What do you think goes over the line as far as too much personal information?
Should personal information be moderated out?
Has anyone had negative experiences after posting personal information on the internet, maybe on dating sites or other [...]

Helmets, Seat Belts and Acceptable Risk.

by Alice May 6, 2009

I drive a scooter, weather permitting, and I love it. I’m looking to purchase my first motorcycle this summer, and I always wear my helmet.
Do I wear it because I think I should? Yes. Do I think people should have to wear them… no. I wear my helmet because I want to watch my kids [...]

Repo gone horribly wrong.

by Alice April 8, 2009

Peter Estay Senior and his son Peter Michael Estay were both scheduled to be sentenced. But things didn’t go as planned.
http://www.kidk.com/news/42561432.html
I just read this article on the KIDK website. Having known people that reposessed cars for a living, it seems that if the Lyles had their papers in order and had contacted the sheriff’s department [...]

Is there a rise in aggressive driving?

by Alice April 5, 2009

I’ve been trying to think of a subject for a new article, and then it hit me, or it nearly did, driving down 17th street.
Is it just me, or has there been a rise in the aggressive driving in Idaho Falls?
I realize that it is spring (or at least it’s trying to be) and when [...]

Idaho’s Most Wanted

by Alice March 2, 2009

Every week, the Post Register shows several pictures and descriptions of individuals that are in custody and awaiting sentencing. Often the same people are shown 2 weeks at a time.
I’m sure this serves a purpose, but I, for one, don’t quite understand it.
These people are in custody, so we’re not looking for them. They are [...]

What, exactly, is wrong with good old sugar?

by Alice February 22, 2009

I’ve just read yet another article about another new artificial sweetener. This new sweetener is called Stevia.
Wow, they are really running out of names…
I, for one, have a negative reaction to any and all artificial sweeteners. They make me feel out of focus and dizzy, and when I eat anything including them they feel slimy [...]

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your teenage self?

by Alice December 11, 2008

Being the mother of 2 teenagers who manage to recoil from most all of the wisdom-nuggets I attempt to educate them with, I had a thought. If I could go back in time and visit myself as a teenager, and I was allowed to give one bit of advice, what would that be.
I didn’t even [...]

Regarding marriage and the differing opinions thereof.

by Alice December 8, 2008

I read a comment a couple of weeks ago that made me stop and think. I believe that the comment was in the opinions page of the Post Register, but I’m not definite on that.
Anyway, the comment was regarding the gay marriage laws. The writer asked how the people wanting to allow gay marriage would [...]

Any way you slice it, it’s vandalism.

by Alice October 25, 2008

Lately I’ve seen a few stories in the paper, on the news, and online, regarding vandals defacing political signs. The few stories that I saw all related to democratic signs being defaced. Are there other stories of republican signs being vandalized? I ask because I haven’t kept up with the news like I should and [...]

Problems with Idaho Falls Door to Door Cleaner Salesmen

by Alice October 2, 2008

Has anyone else had problems with door-to-door cleaner salesmen?
As a small (very small) business owner, I’ve been the target for just about every door-to-door, phone, mail and internet sales pitch imaginable.
My current gripe is the door-to-door sellers of the miracle cleaner that claims to clean anything and everything far better than anyone could have possibly [...]
