Mission Statement

  • IdahoFallsToday.com (formerly IdahoFallz.com) aims to provide Idaho Falls area residents opportunity to engage in local conversations not normally allowed by our traditional big media.
  • April 2006 Clarification: IdahoFallsToday.com is open to many alternative and sometimes uncomfortable ideas. However, we will not host any speech that demeans others in a subjective or personal manner, nor will we allow links to sites that promote hate or abuse. Some could say then that we are not true believers in ‘free speech’. eBay is viewed as the world’s marketplace, and yet restricted many items from their site after they decided those items caused more harm than good to the majority population. So the world is not perfect. Life will go on with what good we can manage to do.

Long-Term Visions

  • To encourage more communications around southeast Idaho.
  • To increase understanding in our local population.
  • To enable more connections between area residents.
  • To become the virtual public agora in Idaho Falls.

Goals

  • Maintain our rank as the primary source of both non-commercial and comercial Idaho links.
  • Encourage enough contributors to sign up and write often enough that at least five stories are published daily.
  • Encourage nightly chats in the chatbox among locals and tourists.

About www.IdahoFallsToday.com

  • IdahoFallsToday.com is tasked with becoming an alternative convergence point for those with interests in the Idaho Falls, Idaho area.
  • The successful community orientation of IdahoFallsToday.com is dependent on others interacting and participating.
  • The goal of this website is to gather all local links and interests in one convenient location, and to encourage more public discussion, dialog, and participation.
  • If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please feel free to submit via the contact form.
  • IdahoFallsToday.com is now a for-profit business in Idaho.

Colophon

  • IdahoFallsToday.com is run on open-source solutions, including PHP, Apache, Wordpress, and Wordpress plugins.

Rules for Posts

  • IdahoFallsToday.com exercises very little editorial restrictions over registered users and what they write.

  • IdahoFallsToday.com does forbid swear words. We are not afraid of bad words, but we do not want IdahoFallsToday.com to be restricted by local school or parental filters. The IdahoFallsToday.com philosophy is that swear words are often a crutch for actual communication, so authors should seek to find alternative expressions than inflammatory swear words. Swear words that are alluded to by punctuation (i.e. sh!t) are allowed).
  • If numerous complaints are made about individual posts or writers, site administrators will investigate and discuss solutions with the author. Controversial posts are more likely to be configured so users must click to read rather than outright deleting the words. This is akin to controversial art being displayed inside a gallery where visitors must make the conscience decision to enter and cannot complain if they are offended by what they find.
  • Multiple infractions of controversial writings that draw numerous complaints and seem to by written more for the purpose of antagonizing rather than expanding perspectives may cause a writer to be suspended or banned from contributing. This is an extremely rare circumstance, but the option is there to prevent IdahoFallsToday.com from becoming a lawless outpost.
  • Content posted to IdahoFallsToday.com is joint-owned by IdahoFallsToday.com and original writers in the following manner: writers can use their work elsewhere, and IdahoFallsToday.com can keep, delete, or restore writers’ publishings on IdahoFallsToday.com. Writers may use only their own publishings to earn money without the permission of IdahoFallsToday.com. IdahoFallsToday.com may use any and all registered writers’ publishings collectively to earn money without the permission of the original writers.
  • Since they create them, writers are ultimately responsible for their words in case of libelous actions. Writers are encouraged to proofread their writing to ensure libel charges cannot be brought against them. Writers are encouraged to both research libel definitions and to contact an attorney experienced in libel matters before publishing material that can get them sued.
  • Writers are restricted from publishing topics that focus on commercial businesses. The reason is this generates free advertising for that business, and IdahoFallstoday.com sells both advertising and business profiles to businesses. We wish we could profile all local businesses for no charge, but the site has bills and that is our current revenue model.

Rules for Comments and Chatbox

  • Constructive critiques and Thank you comments are welcome and are encouraging to the article authors.
  • Insulting and offensive comments and general flaming against anyone is however not permitted on this site and your comment will be deleted.
  • Multiple infractions of bad netiquette will result in your IP address being banned (you will be shunned from the community and blocked from participating).
  • Users leaving comments retain ownership of their remarks. (Hence: You own your comments.) IdahoFallz.com cannot be responsible for what others say. If you find any remarks especially offensive or defamatory, please notify us via the contact form
  • We have the ability to see your exact IP address, see where you came from and where you left to, track and screenshot all of your actions across our site, and we even know what you’re doing under the covers. We respect our users and only use this information in cases of people being jerks to others and not following site netiquette or to comply with legal American investigations. We reserve the right to not only ban you, your IP, your name, and your comments, but also to forward collected information showing what a bad person you’ve been to your ISP and ask them to cancel your Internet access (read: you cause us problems and we’ll make sure you can’t even get online anymore.) So let’s play nice, and we won’t tell your mother what you did under the covers.

Wow this is a nice site. :0) I like the comments even though I don’t 100% agree with all of them. I am a grad student at the University of Sacred Heart in Connecticut. If you don’t mind I will use your blog as a example for my semester project that I am doing on the internet and ecommerce. If you reject the thought send me a quick email

I would like to know how to become a (poster) for the site. I have been a (resident) of Idaho Falls for most of my life besides the two years I lived in Boise. I live in Iona, which I actually consider to be (part) of IF. Everything that happens in IF affects Iona, I use alot of IF’s infrastructure and am extremely excited about the growth the area is going through and the growth that is going to happen. I believe IF will be a (major) city in the Intermountain West very soon, within five years at the most, and look forward to any critisism, constructive mainly, that I can give to make this metro area what it should be, and hopefully we can bring a voice to city and county leaders to let our elected leaders know how we feel. I appreciate your reply and look forward to any feedback I can give.

Dustin, I like your optomistic view and share it. How did you find this site? Have you referred 5-10 of your friends? If you know of businesses that might want to be profiled, those are things that might be helpful to Joe.

I owe Paula this web site, but it’s a little hard to fit into the chat. This is interesting as it talks about the potential for growth of all cities. This is also the site where they named Costco as coming to Idaho Falls.

You might be interestd in this site. So that I could show Paula to the direct comment, I am deep into this web site. But, anyone should be able to find their way back out to the Skyscrapers site.
    Here’s the Costco reference:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=109531. A lot of people think there are good things down the road for Idaho Falls.

I remember one chat where a person (and I apologize for not remembering the name) talked about I.F. being a corrider of energy. Between INL and the Windmills, it could really develope into someting bigger than some people think. Clearly, the Walker brothers think so. Plus the other new developments planned.

Paula, I hope you read this, as I have owed you this web site for quite a while. It’s actually quite interesting, at least to me. And, what I really like is the respect those who post in the various threads show each other.

Dustin, please don’t take this wrong, I’m just curious. What makes you think the I.F. metro area will grow so much? I’m not saying I disagree, I just wonder if it’s a gut feeling for you, knowledge of projects to come or something else? I agree that Iona is basically Idaho Falls. I find it easier to just refer to the Bonneville County population, goods and services.

Glad to have you on board. I look forward to many chats with you, I hope.

    Paula,

Sorry, this is the correct link for Costco. It appears to be in the planning committee meetings in I.F. right now. Remember all of us that want notes of meetings, this would sure be easier to access on the city’s web site.
The other one was strictly Taylor’s Crossing.

Here is a good example of a new project in the works. Go to the website villa2929.com. The building the developers are proposing is a medical office building, three stories high. Actually it is set to be two building connected by a skyway. Another interesting thing is some of the developers (firms) are foreign companies, which in my opinion means more and more investors may be looking to this area. The medical sector in I.F. is strong and shall continue to grow.

Just found this site via a convoluted search initiated in response to a Boise music store’s assertion that there was a music festival going on in IF this weekend (must have been talking about the Targhee festival?).

Just wanted to say what a great job ya’ll are doing!

    7 Ryan September 22, 2006 at 12:52 pm

Hi! I JUST TODAY found out this site existed. I’ve lived in IF for over 3 years and am always looking for local stories and information. How have I missed you? Glad to be here!

    8 Joe Vandal September 22, 2006 at 3:14 pm

    Tell your friends!

    Tell your family!

    Tell your co-workers!

Bring up IdahoFallz.com at every computer you get a chance to grab the keyboard!

You haven’t heard because we have no budget for advertising, and media coverage has been limited.

We rely entirely on word-of-mouth. It’s hard for most websites to do that; we figure it should be easy since our focus is a small geographic area.

You didn’t hear because nobody told you. Don’t let that happen to the people you know; tell everyone!

    9 roysie October 27, 2006 at 12:52 am

Hey guys how do I join the chat going on right now?

    10 Joe Vandal October 27, 2006 at 6:54 am

All you do is type a name and message and you’ve joined. Feel free to add to the current conversation, respond to an earlier question, or change the subject. The chatbox is really free-form.

How do I get to view the map of sex offenders in my area?

    12 Joe Vandal January 19, 2007 at 6:36 am

The sex offender maps are linked below in the site footer, found on every page.

There are two links, listed alphabetically as Sex Offenders by Database, and Sex Offenders by Google Map.

I have browsed with interest, some of the posts on this board. I agree with those who site the good ol’ boy network. As far as the good ol’ gal network, yes, I believe that exists too, although not to the extent. Much depends on who those good ol’ gals married (or at least, in most cases).

I don’t know the reason behind the firing of Kris Carlson. What I do know is that she went from waiting table (Cedrics cafe and North Hiway), as a cheerful, friendly, outgoing young woman (receiving the tips many of us so generously gave her) – to working at IFPD marking chalk on cars parked too long in one spot. She turned into a sober faced, if not perpetually frowning, clearly unhappy person who seemed to have felt superior to those of us who tipped her so well before. Personally, I made every attempt to continue being friendly to her in spite of the nasty looks she gave many of us who had once liked her.

Then she got the job at animal control and quite honestly, wasn’t any friendlier. Perhaps she expressed her attitude to someone who didn’t appreciate it and was in the position of repremanding her for it?

    Just a thought.
