I was thoroughly disappointed on Sunday afternoon while assisting the Idaho Falls Police Dept. capture a 23 year old women and her 17 yr old boyfriend (runaway) who were eating at the soup kitchen.
The workers at the soup kitchen did everything they could to derail and stall police as the two escaped. On one hand I am happy that the soup kitchen exist however they should not go out of their way to protect criminals! My contributions are now going to the food bank.

One thing you need to realize is the Soup Kitchen is staffed everyday by various organizations that volunteer to serve. I think the Mormon Church has one day of the week and other churches and civic organizations fill in the other days. Since the volunteers are just that, volunteers, and some are there for the first time, they don’t have the same poeple day in and day out, so a misguided volunteer may of felt a bit protective of those they were there to serve. Please don’t blame the entire Soup Kitchen organization.
I accompanied a fellow that wanted to eat there, and wanted me to join him. Curious, and being his PSR worker, I did and found the food rather pleasant. I would have to think that if any one got in the way, it would have been a fellow diner trying to protect someone, or to be in the way rather easily to begin with, as a lot go in and out of there. More so then a staff/volunteer person that would be in the way…intentionally. Some of the volunteers there, can get rather confused and can’t understand everything all at one, too many times. They are constantly busy, and are surely confused. Give them a break, please. There are allot of people who are truly IN NEED out there, and the Soup Kitchen is vital to them. The workers were most likely just busy doing there job, and may ask if they could help you. Remember what Herb said …the Soup Kitchen staff are not likely at fault, as the staff members rotate days weeks and shifts. Good Day!
I’m more than a little surprised our police force chose to arrest the couple inside the soup kitchen. Apparently they’d been following them awhile to know they were there, or were alerted by someone to their where abouts – so could have waited for them to leave the building.
Disrupting a community service that feeds the poor is not necessary when their are non-disruptive means to accomplish their objectives.
God Bless the soup kitchen and all its volunteers. Too, God Bless all they serve.
I have a feeling there’s a lot more to this story than what was posted above. I’m not even sure it justified a whole article, but to each his own.
Catch”em where you can, I say. Is there something sacred about a soup kitchen?
Yes there is more to this story, or possibly the real story is that the Idaho laws do not protect young (minor) males in the same way they protect females. So even though these two were living together and in an obvious “boyfriend/girlfriend” relationship…prosecutors are not interested in pursuing charges against the women. Also, thanks for the soup kitchen support- you all are right that the soup kitchen is a great resource for Idaho Falls and I cannot hold them accountable for the actions of a volunteer.
Thank you Soup Kitchen, for all you have givingly done! Kudos to you!
Does anyone recall my saying the “warrants team” was a tad enthusiastic? Well, now you have a good example of it. A 17 year old runaway and his 23 year old girlfriend are not dangerous violent criminals. But the warrants team went in acting like they had just cornered Jack the Ripper and everyone seems upset at the staff of the soup kitchen. Wouldn’t it have been more prudent to have just waited outside until they left and take them into custody in the parking lot away from innocent people who could be harmed? What about the danger posed to everyone inside the Soup Kitchen during the course of this event? Of course they weren’t thinking of the citizens of the community, only about the fun of a dust-up during the course of this tremendously important arrest. (No, I’m not supporting the 23-year old or her actions. I know nothing about the case and have NO COMMENT or opinion as to that issue)
Chief Roos, you need to get a handle on your warrants team and put some procedures in place. How about a little training where they are reminded of whom they serve and how to do that with the least probability of danger to innocent civilians. Oh, and by the way, these 2 people are innocent civilians as well. Warrant or not, they are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, and are entitled to be treated accordingly.
Another Guest – were you present at the soup kitchen on that day?
I don’t believe it’s standard operating procedure for officers to “wait until the perps finish dinner” (whether at home or a soup kitchen) before serving said warrant.
I’d like to know how the people that the officers were trying to apprehend were acting when the officers arrived. There may have been a reason that the officers had to act more forcefully.
