Anyone with an IQ above room temperature knows we would all be safer as a society with fewer firearms. The problem is, short of kicking in the doors of every citizen (law abiding and criminal) in the United States and forcibly retrieving these guns, there is no way in hell to control or regulate the millions upon millions of weapons already in circulation. The worn out adage “when guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns” is somewhat true in my opinion.
I have a concealed weapons permit and I am armed to the teeth. I live in Idaho Falls, a low crime rate area so no, I’m not worried about gangsters or Muslim terrorists out to rape my wife, kill my children, and blow up my house. I’m worried about all the law abiding right wing nut jobs that have a concealed weapons permit, are also armed to the teeth, and are worried about gangsters or Muslim terrorists out to rape their wives, kill their children, and blow up their houses. Is this a rational fear? Perhaps if you live in Brownsville Texas, but not in Idaho Falls where regular folks live. The odds of one these ass clowns using his concealed weapon to successfully stop a crime are about the same as hitting the powerball (unless you check with the NRA in which case there are 40 to 50 million instances every hour or two across the country).
Are right wing nut jobs with concealed weapons permits rational? Oh hell no. These FOX news fanatics have taken it upon themselves to play citizen police officer with little or no training and pack a gun around “in case they run into trouble” and base it all on sensationalized media reports of mass killings in anytown USA and their God given 2nd amendment right to pack heat.
They scare the feces out of me because they pose a far worse threat to our sleepy little town’s law and order than the imaginary thugs they are supposedly protecting themselves from. Real criminals are easy to identify (beady eyes, black stocking cap, tattoos, etc…) and avoid but gun totting average citizens (baseball caps, pot guts, 6 kids in tow, etc…) convinced every one is out to get them blend in like Travis Bickle before the mohawk, therefore I have armed myself based on the cold war principal of mutually assured destruction.
If someone someday will provide a realistic avenue to rid America of its firearms so that I can go to the grocery store and know there isn’t some idiot suffering from low self esteem carrying a .357 (legal or not) under his coat, I will gladly listen. Until then, I’m exercising my option to shoot back.

Thanks for the laugh — I really needed one. Just two questions for you: How many shootings/killings in the Idaho Falls area in the last several years were committed by these right wing nut jobs who scare the hell out of you? And how many were committed by those tattooed, bestocking-capped individuals that are so easy to pick out?And I want stats on crimes committed solely for the reasons you state, not crimes of passion, as in the high-profile killing in Idaho Falls of late. Things like that are done by law-abiding concealed weapon carriers and the right-wing nut jobs.
i’m glad you own a gun. More power to you. You can own a whole closetful if you want, and it sounds like perhaps you do. Doesn’t bother me.
I don’t own any guns. I’m not worried about muslims or Rollo the Mad-Dog rapist coming to get me and mine, nor do I fret that I don’t have . We have gone completey hysterical in this country over gun crime because of high-profile incidents that get all of our collective panties in a twist. And yet it’s like the reporting that’s done on the planes that land every day without crashing. No crash. No news. No gunplay. No news.
It may be said that it’s “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” an analogue of your mutually-assured destruction. But doesn’t that leave us all, in the end, blind and toothless?
Does gun control work? Only in as much as people will let their guns be controlled. Sure, there are right-wing nut jobs out there who don’t want gun control. But do you really think the criminal element will roll over and go back to dance-fights like in West Side Story because of gun control? Even rectum-tight gun control? Not hardly. Gun control only works for the likes of folks like you and me. You want guns and thus can go out and get them, jumping through what background checks and such are required by law. I don’t want guns, but I can go out in public and rest assured that if I see someone weilding an AK-47 99 times out of 100 it’s going to be a tattooed, stocking-capped criminal, not likely one of these right-wing nut jobs, or a gun-carrying, law-abiding citizen such as yourself. Nor do I fret about “creeping marauders burrowing through the snow toward the kitchen where only you and you alone stand between your tiny, huddled family and insensate evil,” as Ralphie Parker might say.
Hm.. You seem a bit paranoid.
Well… here’s a bit of paranoia for you. Suppose we had an immense natural disaster. I know that might /never/ happen. I mean… such things /never/ happen ((Cough cough Haiti cough hack))
In the midst of disaster ALL the whackos come out. When primary infrastructure is damaged and there is no feasible way to support government action in an effected region ((hack hack haiti cough hack)) then lil’ old me doesnt have a way to fend off those who would wish to harm me or my family.
I personally feel that the biggest part of gun control is teaching gun safety and security. We Americans are privileged to be allowed guns, and it is a right I do not wish to give up. The world is an uncertain place. Our leaders are not all-knowing all-powerful protectors. They cannot protect us from earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, etc. They try very hard to protect us from /yes/ terrorists. They don’t always succeed.
Perhaps part of what makes it hard to fathom an invasion on our soil is that the wackos that would try to do such a thing never know who’s packing.
We cannot live in a country where the powers that be try to protect us all like unruly children. We are humans. We are free, and we manage to have a pretty decent society in spite of it all. Having every measure of your life dictated doesn’t result in a better life. Just look at sharia law in the middle east and look at china. More control =/= safety.
Regardless of what happens, some people will have weapons. They may be sharpened sticks, but some people will be more armed than others, always.
Call it paranoia or preparedness, I see nothing wrong with making sure that your family is taken care of in whatever way helps you sleep at night. Odds are, you’ll never have to use your gun or your 3 years of stored food, but if it helps keep you sane to have these things, why not?
Good point Alice. I also believe it’s important to be prepared especially when it involves protecting ones family. It’s got nothing to do with paranoia in my opinion.
I don’t agree with the posters comment of “Idaho Falls and regular folks”. (perhaps he was being facetious) In this day and age it doesn’t matter where you live, idiots with guns are everywhere. While their are certainly much more dangerous places to live in this country, no city is immune to this type of crime. It can and does happen anywhere.
I also believe if you have firearms in your home that gun safety should be top priority, especially around children.
I can tell you my brothers and I pulled some bone-headed stunts regarding guns AND ammunition when we were kids. (always when our parents weren’t home of course) But that’s another story for another time.
Take a look at areas where gun control is in place versus areas where concealed carry is allowed. The statistics speak for themselves…..gun control promotes more crimes because the only people who have guns are the criminals.
I know statistics are an inconvenient thing….talking about right-wing nut jobs sounds fun, but the reality is anything but. So, when your house gets broken into Mr. Worley, call the police (if you can get to the phone in time) and hope they get there in 5 minutes what can take a criminal 5 seconds to take your life or that of a loved one. You don’t have to like guns, but you should appreciate that they allow all of us to take personal responsibility to protect ourselves and our families. So, 5 minutes or 5 seconds, don’t infringe on our rights just to make yourself feel better. It won’t make you or us any safer!
The original founders of our great Country not only came here for religious freedom, some of them also for adventure and seeking fortune, but too for the right to protect themselves thru gun ownership. So much was denied them back in merry ol’ England.
And it appears that protecting ourselves with guns is still a darn good idea:

Even here in Idaho, a “safe” State, guns come in real handy against the bad guys.

Go down to “offenses by region” and you’ll see Bonneville County is the safest place to live in the whole State of Idaho. -Cool- Still, according to the numbers, and the fact that more and more people are moving to Idaho all the time (why?), owning a gun to keep your family and yourself safe isn’t a bad idea at all. So why are all the down on guns liberals so hard on us up with guns states?
They might have good reason. Here in Idaho there is no law on how many guns you can buy in one day. You can then turn around and sell them in the streets to… anyone, including criminals. Before selling my last home, I had a large garage sale and advertised there would be many antiques, fur coats and guns. The day before I called the police and checked if it was o.k. to sell the guns in a garage sale, because it sounded illegal and dangerous. They said, yes, it was o.k. I said, o.k.
To be cautious, I took each person’s driver license who bought a gun and copied it; noting the description of the gun they bought (just in case…).
In 2004 the national assault weapons law ended and those guns can now be purchased in Idaho. Why, who needs an assault weapon in Idaho? Weapons dealers are not required to finger print nor obtain ballistics samples of the guns before selling the guns to there new owners (for the purpose of assisting law enforcement should the guns be used illegally). You already know how easy it is to obtain a concealed carry permit. Idaho does not require that guns be safely stored away from children or that guns be sold with a child safety lock; although police are required to keep their guns safely secured when off duty.
Idaho doesn’t track stolen guns and doesn’t even require citizens to report lost or stolen guns. I imagine most folks report their stolen guns, and imagine there are a lot of stolen guns on our streets. I know of three people who’ve had guns stolen over the past several years. The thieves were never caught and the guns never found.
There are many more reasons the liberals cry about our guns. More importantly, there is much more we could do to protect our children, our families, and ourselves from gun danger and especially criminals with guns.
Lets not forget why we have the right to bear arms in the first place!
This is the Peoples government, It’s not the other way around here in the States (at least its not supposed to be). In order to keep it that way we the people need to be on equal footing with the government. Why would you want the government to have the upper hand against its own citizens???? There are terrible examples of what happens all throughout the world and all through history when government has an upper hand over the citizenry. This measure was an attempt to keep the government in check by the people directly, so that if the time comes and the people need to they would have the power and ability to take back control of THEIR government from corrupt powers. It does seem forceful and improbable in these politically correct days, and prosperous times that people would have to fight against a corrupt domestic government. All throughout history People have had to do it, many times unsuccessful but we still have to make an attempt if and when the time comes.
We owe it to our future generations. Otherwise we degenerate back into monarchies and dictatorships. After all the progress mankind has made, the future can only look back at us as cowards and disgraces for not protecting it properly. Willfully giving up the tools we need to maintain our government and society is disgusting. So is the misuse of those tools, which is what I believe the Clarence is really addressing here. When it comes down to it, like all other social ills we are facing, a lack of proper education is to blame. Its not concealed weapons.
Wow, what an interesting concept! So are there any other of our constitutional rights that should be limited in who gets them?
Let’s see. How about religion? That’s the first amendment. So, people should be free to worship (or not) as they please, as long as they are Mormons? Or should we say Catholics? That worked out during the Spanish Inquisition, don’t you think? Or should we just say David Koresh and Jim Jones shouldn’t be allowed to worship as they please and the rest of us can?
How about the press and free speech? Is it okay to be able to publish what we want? Or can we only be liberal and favorable to Obama? If you don’t like Obama, then this little constitutional right doesn’t apply to you. I mean really, that Rush Limbaugh, he’s such a pesky fellow. He shouldn’t have freedom of speech cuz it’s just too darn hard for me to change the dial when I don’t want to hear what he has to say!
Freedom to assemble. I suppose that’s this website in a way. And town hall meetings and the city council meetings. We should really have a list, don’t you think, of who can be there and who can’t?
Boy and those 4th, 5th and 6th Amendment rights are beyond a nuisance, aren’t they? Why should criminals have the right to remain silent, privacy, lawyers, jury trials, and all that expensive stuff? Those are only for innocent people, not guilty ones!! When your neighbor or the police accuse somebody of a crime, LOCK ‘EM UP! Throw away the key!!!
Eminent domain hearings? Hey, if the government wants somebody’s property they’ve held in their families for centuries, they ought to be able to just take it, shouldn’t they? Why should we have to pay tax dollars so our government can give some poor schmo money for dirt?
And when some guy’s doctor was too drunk to be doing brain surgery, what right should he have to a trial to recover damages? If the doctor says he wasn’t too drunk, then tough bananas! The idiot shouldn’t have let that guy do surgery on him in the first place. Oh, he was unconscious when the ambulance delivered him to the emergency room? Well, them’s the breaks, dude. Get over it.
And cruel and unusual punishment? Well, we’ve already surrendered that right here in good ol’ Idaho Falls. Our prosecutors believe wholeheartedly in the death penalty for jaywalking.
I obviously want to be sitting on the panel who decides who gets their constitutional rights and who doesn’t!!! Darn sure don’t want to be the guy “they” are deciding about. Who is “they,” by the way? Who gets to decide who sits on the panels?
Of course, one could always hypothesize it might be better to just make sure every person or citizen, as the case may be, gets them all, and live with the difficulty and expense so innocent people don’t go to jail, they can vote and have the right to be heard and to worship the God of their choosing, the government doesn’t take their property away for nothing so the mayor’s brother-in-law can develop it into luxury condos with a little brown envelope going to the mayor in sincere appreciation, and they don’t get strapped into Old Sparky for cutting a U-turn on Broadway.
I know the second amendment is a tricky target (pardon the pun) but the person who thinks crime will stop when guns are eliminated is sorely in need of an education about crime statistics.
If we could magically whisk away every gun in the world then the world would be a better place but we can’t so gun control is useless. Criminals will still have guns.
I agree with the OP though that a so called “normal” person going postal with their gun worries me more than the average crook does. The crooks you can by in large avoid with a bit of common sense, its the normal people who snap that you don’t see coming.
You are an idiot!
Clarence Worly, your logic defies comprehension. Your rant proves that you are as paranoid as the “…right wing nut jobs..” you so gleefully disparage. If you find Idaho Falls such a safe place to live, why are you “…armed to the teeth….”? Maybe we all should get a CWL, just in case you should happen to mistake someone for one of these “…ass clowns…”, of whom you are so fearful.
