A Meteor reportedly lit up the Southeast Idaho Sky just after midnight last night according to one IdahoFallsToday.com guest who witnessed the event first hand.

“Manybees” a user on the local community site wrote, “did anyone see the meteor that just lit up the sky a few minutes ago?”

“[It was] incredible! It lit up the entire sky like daylight where I’m at south of IF. It was close enough to see fire and a cloud of smoke/dust trailing it. Traveling west to east.”

A meteor is the visible streak of light that occurs when a meteoroid enters the Earth’s atmosphere. Meteors typically occur in the mesosphere, and most range in altitude from 75 km to 100 km.[4] Millions of meteors occur in the Earth’s atmosphere every day. Most meteoroids that cause meteors are about the size of a pebble. They become visible between about 40 and 75 miles (65 and 120 kilometers) above the earth. They disintegrate at altitudes of 30 to 60 miles (50 to 95 kilometers). www.wikipedia.org

Meteor’s are seen from time to time in the area, but a meteor lighting up the entire night sky is a rare sight to see.

They may have beat you, Joe, but they’re in Utah. It looks like you’re still the first to have an article in Idaho. ha ha.

We got a flood of phone calls when this happened. A NASA scientist out of Utah says it was centered over the west desert, towards Wendover. I’m searching for any local pictures or video right now.

I’ve seen my share of meteors over the years, but I must admit I’ve never seen any that bright. Wow! Thanks for the clips.

I’ve already heard mumblings about people spotting black government cars following the meteor.

Let the conspiracy begin!

I like him as well, but he’ll be out of here as soon as he gets a better offer just as every other reporter/anchor does in this town.

My husband told me about this phenomenon, known as a fireball, shortly after he had witnessed it for himself. He and some coworkers were headed east on their way home from the INL when the midnight sky lit up around them. Immediately they began to speculate on the origin of the light; all briefly thought, being site workers, that some sort of nuclear accident had occurred.

Great to see the videos of the event!
