Has anyone else noticed the monster sandbar and the rocks out in the Snake just off the Pancheri bridge?
I have seen the sandbar before, but in the 20 plus years I have lived in Idaho Falls I have never seen it so big.
It is big enough to walk out on and fish from. And there are 3 or 4 rocks out in the river just out from the sandbar that I have never seen before.

Admin Note: Here is a shot from Pancheri bridge via Google. Is this pointed toward the sand bar referred to above? If so, it could be a “before” picture, and I’ll snap a current picture to compare.

I’ve never seen the sandbar. But the sand dunes in St Anthony are crazy weird! Where’d all that sand come from, anyway?
M.B – do you have a digital camera, where you could photograph the sand bar and email it to the site to be posted to your article? Would give a good visual to those site users outside of the area, or unable to see it for any reason.
I have noticed it but honestly just thought it had been there and I hadn’t noticed it before. I only noticed it because I drove by there one day and there were a TON of ducks standing out on it. Strange whatever it is.
It’s been there for as long as I can remember. Rivers constantly change, especially one as powerful as the Snake. So it’s not unusual for sandbars to appear and disappear throughout the years.
I snapped a couple pictures while a couple dudes were fishing (see post above). Can someone tell me if I took a picture of the right thing? Or was my camera aim off? I’m relatively new to the area and didn’t notice how it was before.
No that is not of the place in question. The snad bar in question is about 30 to 50 feet south of the Pancheri Bridge. The place that you took the picture of is just north of the Sunnyside Bridge. If you want to take a picture of the sand bar in question you could take if from the Iggy’s parking lot or when walking across the Pancheri bridge.
Good piture though!
Thanks love2ride – yep wrong bridge! I just just noticed that too and must have removed the pictures as you were writing this comment.
Above is a picture from Pancheri bridge via Google (not sure when it was taken) – is that facing the right thing? If so, I’ll take a current photo this weekend to place in the post and compare.
I’m not familiar with all the nooks and crannies in the area, so stumbling around the wrong bridge to look around and find some photo subjects was fun.
I thought about taking pictures of some of the ugly graffiti (not the artful kind) but then I thought the better of it. If I post that, it will of course just encourage more graffiti.
That is the correct direction. The sand bar would be on the left side of the bridge if facing in the same direction.
The current picture is not as good as the one that you had posted earlier though. lol
I have lived here all my life, that sand bar has been there as long as I can remember. During high water, in the spring and early summer, it is covered. It reappears during low water periods. I used to water ski there before the ramp was closed and had to stay clear of the sandbar.
Yeah, that is what I was thinking. Not that I’ve been in Idaho Falls all my life, but I do know that water levels are high in spring when winter melt off occurs, and continues in summer with spring rains, etc. Once early fall hits, the rain pretty much has stopped, and the irrigation damns have to be opened up to feed the fields, the river and lake levels drop considerably. Those levels stay low until winter, when harvest has ended, precipitation falls increase, and then in spring when the weather allows a mountain thaw to bring the water down to the valley.
It ain’t brain surgery
