We are welcomed today with a fresh blanket of snow, and a much anticipated ski season approaching, there’s a question for some if they’re going to spend the hundreds of dollars necessary for a season ski pass, or back off a bit this year.
The answer to that question will likely have something to do with your current financial situation, and how hard-core you are.
Me, I love to ski, but probably not to the point of being hard-core. And being relatively new to the area, I’m wondering where the best places to ski might be, and how do the local prices for season passes compare with each other?

Best place to hit the slopes? You might want to limit your question a bit, because S.E. Idaho has a few good ski areas and not too far away are long time famous ski hills.
Kelly Canyon Ski area, in the Ririe area is very popular in the winter and buses run all snow ski season long. Over Pocatello way is the Pebble Creek Ski area. It’s good, but not as good as Kelly Canyon; but I’m prejudice (even though I’ve spent more time in Pocatello than in Idaho Falls).
In central Idaho, best of all, is Sun Valley Ski resort. Yeehaw! Those hills are not for beginners, but they do have a bunny hill. My family has had a cabin in Ketchum since before I was born, so we pretty much grew up in Sun Valley. One summer, when most of my generation were in college so weren’t using the cabin much, the family rented it out to Jan Micheal-Vincent’s (star of “The World’s Greatest Athlete) wife and their two kids. They absolutely destroyed our beautiful cabin. The pigs! We had a property rental company carrying for the cabin whose insurance paid for all the damages and sued the Actor for reimbursement. We never rented out the cabin again – open to family and close friends ONLY!
Sun Valley Ski Hills are funtastic! Cross country there isn’t too bad, either. In another direction and not too far away is Jackson Hole, Wyoming; one more famous, wonder of skiing dream opportunity.
When it comes to skiing, you might not live in a better place in the world than Idaho Falls, Idaho and the surrounding communities.
You wont find a better place to ski than Utah. I’ll make the drive down several times a year. Yes, there’s skiing here, but nothing beats the slopes in the mountains to the south. The few hour drive is well worth it.
Ever hear of a little pace called COLORADO? The best skiing in the world!!!
Colorado and Utah are too pricey.
GT, SV, and even JH are within few bucks of even the largest CO resorts.
Pomerelle for snowboarding gets my vote!

Several friends of ours enjoy Pebble Creek outside Pocatello. I’d say Kelly Canyon gets the most votes from our friends who ski locally.

My first experience skiing was, well…less than graceful. There was no opportunity for lessons and my skis were over 6ft long which I believe helped send me down the hill faster than shorter skis. I saw what other people were doing, but ultimately my strategy for stopping was always to resort to intentionally crashing.
It was with my church youth group when I was in high school. I’m pretty sure there was a causal relationship between this event and me not going to prom with the girl I had my eye on at the time. There’s no way to look cool wiping out like that.
I’d like to give it another go now that I live in this area. Like the dancing instruction I need someday, I need some “kid friendly” lessons.
I live in Idaho Falls and I think a season pass to Grand Targhee is the best deal. I bought mine for $575 before the price went up. Kelly Canyon is closer but the hill is just too small and crowded for me. I actually think that Pebble Creek south of Pocatello is a better ski hill than Kelly Canyon. It just depends on a person’s abilities which mountain is better for them. Sun Valley is a lot of fun but expensive. I like to splurge once in a while and go to Big Sky, Montana. It’s the same distance from Idaho Falls as Sun Valley. Joining the Idaho Falls Ski Club can also get you discounts almost everywhere.
Which ski area would be the best for someone that has never been skiiing? I don’t have anything so I would have to rent, and I don’t want to go to far from Idaho Falls.
I took lessons at Jackson Hole and they were great but if you want to learn somewhere closer try Kelly Canyon. They offer personal or group lessons and your lift ticket will be included in the price. You can rent skis and snowboards there as well. (all the resorts have equipment rentals) Ski rentals there are 18 bucks a day and poles are 5 bucks. Snowboards are 27 bucks a day. Personal lessons are more expensive so go with a group lesson. They usually put 5-7 people in a group and it’s still very personalized so I would go that route.
I enjoy snowboarding at Targhee or Jackson because there’s a much larger area (longer ski runs) than Kelly Canyon but I frequent KC more during the season because it’s much closer to home and it’s half the price than the larger resorts. Lift tickets at KC are only 36 bucks for a full day lift ticket whereas Targhee costs 69 bucks. Jackson Holes rates vary throughout the season. Now through Dec 11th they’re 55 bucks, Dec 12th – 18th are 78 and the rest of the season they cost 91 bucks for full day lift tickets.
Overall I like Targhee the best but Kelly is more convienent and I’ve never had a problem with crowds there. Of course weekends are more crowed than weekdays, but that’s the case anywhere you go.
Thanks for the info. Last time my son was snowboarding at Kelly’s he fell and broke his collarbone. Odds are against us both breaking something at the same place (I hope lol) and I’m sure he’s ready to try again
