I was wondering why is it that at some schools, that the staff”s family is allowed to “hang out” in the office, I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this going on. I thought that the schools had a “no loitering” policy on the school grounds, or is that only for non staff family members? Yet every time that I go to my kids school, I always notice that “certain” staff family members are in the office, sitting in the chairs, talking to family that works at the school, bringing them lunch, and eating lunch with them in the office, discussing things like what to do on the weekend, issues at the school, teachers and some of the problem students.
Oh let’s not forget the kids, we’re not talking about the ones that go to the school, we are talking about the staff’s kids, that are allowed to be in the office, because mom, or grandma works in the office. Wonder what would happen where I work if I brought my family, or kids to “hang out?” So why is it okay for their family members to hang around, what are my tax dollars, and the school levy’s that are passed paying for? Teachers and staff to sit around and shoot the breeze with family, or to better the education of the students that attend the school. Next time you are at your kids school, take a look in the office, and see who’s “hanging around.”

This is common practice in all of the small schools in smaller towns I’ve dealt with the last 10 years professionally. Really, it’s up to the principal or superintendent to make the call and discuss with the employee whether it’s a problem or not. Seems to be pretty common in this area of Idaho, whether one agrees or not. I guess my concern as a parent would come into play if a teacher’s family or kids were hanging out in his/her classroom while they are supposed to be teaching my child. I’d say something then. But if the school secretary’s husband brings her lunch everyday and stays for a chat, no biggie if the admin doesn’t care. If the principal can get his work done while the little wife has nothing else to do with her day, oh well. I agree it’s not very professional looking to the outside public and probably only ads to the reasons Idaho is looked at being so “lax” in education.
We were very lucky to have the above situation happen (hubby of school secretary there on a lunch break) when a fight broke out near the office. The sec and I were the only adults nearby, and female to boot. Her husband was instrumental in helping us stop the fight between two pretty big high school gang banger wanna-be’s.
Complain to the powers that be, either in person or anonymously if you think it’s a problem. Is there really much difference between this and a taxpayer supported government employee who spends a good portion of the day on the internet, facebook, twitter, news sites and (gasp!) idahofallstoday.com?
Yawn.
Unless you can specifically show that educational needs are lacking because a family member drops by then this whole thing is nothing but a long winded and weak rant. Everyone, and I mean everyone, takes personal calls or visits are their job now and then.
Not helpful
Find something better to worry about. Taking two minutes out of your day to see someone you love is not going to hurt their performance. In fact it may even improve it. My husband’s job can get pretty stressful, so it helps him to take a few moments to unload on an unbiased person that he knows will listen and support him (i.e. me). Everyone always says that a teacher has a very stressful job. Let their family be the little ray of sunshine in their day. No biggie.
I do agree that our lives must be pretty good if this is the biggest thing we have to worry about.
Sometimes I like to take my kids with me to school while I teach. Sure they cry and carry on but I show them who is the boss parent around here. I yell at them in German and feed them sauerkraut when they misbehave on the grounds of school. They must obey my every order or be faced with terrible food such as government cheese, sauerkraut, lemons, or grapefruit. I know what you are thinking but it must be done to avoid being annoying to students which is a rule of mine in class. You cannot be soft firm but you must be as metallic as metal in order to get your point across,
