gas pump Idaho Falls Gas Stations Are Price Gouging!!!Okay, go to Gasbuddy.com or drive from Idaho Falls to Pocatello and you will see that Idaho Falls average Gas prices are $2.59 but in Pocatello they are $2.49. Why are two towns that are affected by the same weather, economy etc… that have a $.10 price difference. I think Idaho Falls is price gouging. This needs to stop.

Newru: Good post.

You are absolutely correct on the price difference. The last time I was in Pocatello, I noticed their fuel was on average ten cents less that ours here in Idaho Falls.

Why is that?

My only guess is that they are closer to two interstates and the area consumes more fuel which may allow them to purchase fuel on larger economies of scale.

You know, I think it might be a great idea to keep tabs on which stations in town have the lowest price for fuel.

Maybe some of us users can post to this article the price per gallon when we fuel up our vehicles.

Suggested details:

Location, price per gallon, octane rate, and date.

Thoughts?

They aren’t price gouging. It makes sense that the average cost in Pocy is less than IF – the pipeline is closer. Not only that, but from what I understand, they can’t pump ethanol fuels through the pipes, so gas stations that offer ethanol mixes are automatically going to be more both based on production costs of ethanol and transportation costs.

Distance of delivery has a lot to do with it.

Where commute every day monday though Friday. I can say for the longest time the prices were the same maybey one day IF was higher by a penny then the next day Pocatello was higher. Nothing like this morning when I saw the 10 cent differance. I drive by 9 stations every day I pay attention so when I need to fill up every 4 days I get the lowest price. For the last 14 days Pocatello has been Droping 1 to 2 cents every other day. But Idaho Falls has relitively stayed the same increasing 1 cent every 4 to 5 days. If the piping was the cause then I would always see cheeper prices in Pocatello and that is just not the case. This morning the gas stations on Brodway ans Saturn were over 2.60 and then I made it to pocatello and the Exon on Oak and Jefferson was 2.50. When I dirve home tonight I will post the prices I see.

Channel 8 lists the lowest local fuel prices on their website. http://www.localnews8.com/
The whole ethanol fuel craze is a load of crap and the only ones benefiting from it are the farmers that grow the corn and the gas companies that get govt subsidies for making & selling the crap. It costs more to make than regular fuel and your vehicle (unless it’s a hybrid and made to use ethanol) gets an average of 15% less mpg by putting that crap in your car. I’ve done alot of research on this topic and there is no benefit to using ethanol. You’re burning more fuel and filling up more often because of the reduced mileage.
I won’t put that garbage in any of my vehicles and unfortunately the only place in IF that doesn’t use ethanol in their fuel are the two Chevrons and they average 8 cents gallon more than most other stations in town. It’s a crock!

Maybe it’s worth a stop into one of the gas stations to ask exactly what they’re making per gallon. They won’t lie to you. While you’re there, ask for corporate contacts to verify the income cap that they can make per gallon. I know for a fact that the station on Woodruff and 17th is capped at $0.05/gal per corporate guidelines. That makes it impossible for the stations to gouge at a local level.

You don’t like it, contact the corporate offices. Local gas station owners are hurt just as much by increases as those of us fueling up at them.

Also – have you figured in supply vs. demand in the market? It’s very possible that IF stations are still cycling through the prior gas supply (that costs more) while Pocy stations are cycling in new, cheaper supply. We’ve got 50 miles in between us, it’s not far-fetched.

Besides, you come to expect as much at the peak of the summer months. That’s not to say that I dig paying high prices to fuel up, but the week of the 4th usually marks the start of the sharp rise, while mid to late September marks a slow decline through the winter months.

Again, contact the corporations and bitch about the prices. There’s not much that local owners can do about it.

Drive another 26 miles to the north to Rexburg and witness gasoline prices at $2.69 a gallon. Stop your whining, IF.

I dont see how 26 miles will make gas jump another .10 increase. At least it is consistant with the more north the higer the prices, I dont ever go to rexburg so I dont know it that is normal. As far as the income cap who sets the the base rate because you can’t say its off what rate they buy gas at becuse I know they dont get gas shipments every week and prices change daily. And if that was true then why did memoral weekend end (it only went up that saturday morning) prices jumped in price if I recal it went from 2.15 to 2.25 when crude oil went down in price that week? I really dont care how gas stations make money I know it is like a theater not on tickets but on concessions. I would Guess my quesion would be is who sets the gas rate for the city? Idaho, fed gov, the oil companys, the stations.

So the mayor was on the radio this morning so I gave it a shot and asked if he knew why, He gave a great I dont know political answer, stating it was the industry, But I stopped and thought about it, my guess is they are holding on the price to make bank this 4th of July this weekend, with all the people that come out of town it would not supize me if on July 8th Idaho falls will drop prices to match Pocatello. I would assume it will be below 2.50 pending Crude oil stays or drops in price per barrel

The Bloomberg Report just reported this morning the price of crude has gone up again. I expect the prices to go up during the summer months, it always does, but for the oil companies to cut production just so they can make an extra few billion is gouging in my opinion. I am however grateful that we still pay less than most countries so we can’t really complain.
I’m all for corporations making a profit, but their greed is unparalleled.

The problem I have is the big oil giants seem so “untouchable” to common people to you and me. They probably chuckle, and don’t notice stuff like “boycott xxx gas station days.” But, we are pretty lucky compared to other countries to have plenty of cars to drive, gas to guzzle and endless roads to explore.

And we will never get it. Remember when we were paying 4 bucks and change for a gallon and everyone adjusted their driving habits? Prices stayed like that for awhile. The spec buyers found there wasn’t as much money in the market as they thought and cooled it on their end because demand for new stocks had dropped.

Demand continued to drop to the point where the producers had to either drop prices or cut their throats by scaling back production. So they cut prices in half, we started driving like jaskasses again and now the prices are headed back over 3 bucks a gallon.

Now the price of crude is on it’s way back up, anyone care to guess what’s next? We could start a blog pool forcasting when gas prices will hit 4 bucks a gallon again because Americans can’t stay out of their cars.

While I can only speak for myself, generally speaking people are going to continue driving when and where they want whether it hits 4 dollars a gallon or not. Its only a matter of time so accept it or buy a bicycle. Thats the beauty of having a car and the ability to go wherever you want whenever you want. Those of us who can afford it wont change there driving habits and those who scrape by will cut back on driving just as they did last year. If you cant afford to put gas in your car when its at 4 dollars a gallon you either need to get a better paying job or buy a subcompact that gets 40+ mpg. Fuel prices have always and will continue to always flucuate so we can either accept that or buy a bicycle. The oil companies will continue to make record profits whether we like it or not.

Guest, FYI, it’s cheaper to fork over the higher gas price to fill up your 15 – 20mpg clunker than it is to purchase a “40+ mpg subcompact”.

You know not about what you’re speaking Guest. I was making trips to and from SLC to Huntsmans with my wife during the 4 buck plus gas crunch and while the gas prices didn’t bother me there weren’t near as many other people on the roads as compared to all the other times I’ve made that trip.

I could give a rats arse about the price, but your attitude about it leaves much to be desired because we could change things if we wanted to. We never will as long as people keep walking around singing your defeatist song though.

What everyone fails to realize is even at four dollars a gallon we would still be paying less than most countries in the world so there is no justification in your whining about it. If people make enough money and dont want to change their driving habits what is it to you?

Looks like you’re the one who’s got your elitist panties in a bunch there Guest. I’ve got mine already too guy, it doesn’t hurt me to fill my tank and drive to where I want either. But it doesn’t hurt to care about the people who have to cut back when gas prices get to the $4 range.

It doesn’t really bother me that we’ve got the cheapest gas on the globe, do you feel guilty about that or are you one of the guys that’s pulling your percentage off the top at the pumps?

What’s it to me? I have a flower childish dream that some day the folks that have the bucks will give enough of a crap about the families that don’t that they’ll change their habits just enough to bring about some substantial change in this country. That’s what it is to me, and since my opinion is as important to me as yours is to you, I’ll probably keep on spouting it. So I suggest you untwist your elitist panties and grow some thicker skin.
