I saw an unusual thing today. I was standing in line at the gas station, and the man behind me was crying. He literally had tears in his eyes. I was in is situation, I would cry too. He called out loudly to everyone standing in line, “You all watch channel six news tonight.” There were many inquisitive glances. He said “You all watch the news tonight and you will see why I am so upset.” I think we were all extremely curious, and the cashier said “I can’t. I don’t get off work till seven you better just tell me.” The man said “My dog got mauled to death by two pitbulls.” Our jaws hit the floor. The cashier said “That old lab that came in here with you sometimes?” The man said “Yes. They tore her ear off.”
Apparently, two American Staffordshire terriers belonging to an adjascent neighbor had slipped through the fence while this gentleman was away, and had literally ripped his beloved companion to shreds. That is all I heard, if a person wanted the particulars of the story I would recommend the TV news station’s websites or the papers. I personally don’t care about the details, I have heard enough. According to the American Kennel Club website, “The Am Staff is a people-oriented dog that thrives when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. Although friendly, this breed is loyal to his family and will protect them from any threat. His short coat is low-maintenance, but regular exercise and training is necessary.” That can be roughly translated as “hyper-aggressive and bread for FIGHTING”. Unless you are Michael Vick, there is no reason to own a dog of this breed. The american staffordshire terrier is canis familiaris turned into a weapon.
To humans, the dog is a symbol. For example, the person who buys a huskie is saying “I am an adventurer.” The person who buys a chihuahua is saying “I am a pampered princess.” The person who buys a retriever is saying “I am a hunter.” The person who buys a pitbull is saying “I am a punk and a dirtbag.” To the few responsible owners of “Pits” I apologize, but you are the exception to the rule. These animals are dangerous, and I am just glad it was another dog instead of a small child.
Dear responsible Labrador Retriever Owner, I am sorry for your loss. A city ordinance forbidding the ownership of the american staffordshire terrier is LONG OVERDUE.

Seems odd that he would cry over the loss of his dog while standing in line at a gas station. While it’s sad that his dog was mauled, what was the reasoning behind crying in public and then loudly offering his story to complete strangers? Was he merely looking for attention? What exactly did he expect to accomplish through this public outburst? And how many other stores did he do this at that day or that week even? I can understand how upset he must have been but I can’t understand why he would be crying in public like that unless he was out for attention. I remember seeing part of this story last week on one of the news stations.
The fact is, pretty much any dog can be bred to be vicious and violent. It comes down to how it was raised. I’ve known people that had pit bulls who were as gentle as a kitten and I’ve known people that have had little terriers that would bite a hole in your ankle just for looking at them wrong.
It all boils down to the owner and them being responsible in raising and training their animals. Most people don’t train their dogs properly to begin with. I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve gone to a persons home and had their dog jump all over me as soon as I walk in the front door. People don’t spend the necessary time to train them and I don’t feel it’s the dogs fault when something like this happens. It’s the owners responsibility. At the same time, different breeds of dogs will never get along with each other. I happen to think there’s more to this story than what was told.
There is little doubt that genetics can play a role in temperament. Wild vs. domestic animals is a great example of this. And some breeds of dogs are more domestic than others.
Although I agree that most dogs can be trained to be calm and peaceful, and others can be trained (or neglected) to be aggressive or attacking, there are some breeds that are more prone to agressiveness than others.
I tend to agree that pit-bulls are dangerous animals (just like wolves kept at home are dangerous). I feel awful for this man. There is no reason to not doubt the story as it was told. And I say – the owner of a dangerous animal should be held accountable – at least to some extent.
If nothing else, the attacking dogs should be put to sleep. And possibly the owner fined. I just cant imagine why someone getting a pet would choose something like a pit bull. And if they choose to ignore the dangers, they should be held accountable for the consequences.
Dogs fight with each other, that’s a fact of life. It doesn’t matter if their pit bulls or wiener dogs. But because it was allegedly a pit bull people make a big deal about it. So they got in a fight thats what dogs do. Cats do the same thing but you don’t hear about cat people crying over cat fights.. This guy doesn’t deserve a corn dog if hes going to cry in public a day later about his dog getting his ear chomped on by another dog. i think dog owners should be held responsible if their dogs bite people, but other dogs not so much.
I wonder what the stats are, in this area at least, of different dog breeds and violent attacks?
My son was bitten by a little mixed breed dog when he was younger. That dog was very vicious and left him scarred. When I was a kid, a neighbor’s St. Bernard had fixed it’s aggression on my cockapoo and ripped her up a couple of times before my parents complained and the dog disappeared.
I have raised pitbull/rottie mixes, and they were sweethearts, but they did have a bit more energy than I would have liked for such a large dog. I preferred the pure rotties, they were just big babies, just like I like a big dog. Personally, pitbulls make me nervous because they are so tweaky and seem on edge all the time. People like that unnerve me, too
I do agree though, that most of the problem lies in the owner. You can train a dog to be part of the family, or you can have a dog that just lives with you and does the wild stuff that comes naturally.
Don’t blame the dog, we are SUPPOSED to be the responsible species.
ever walk the green belt and notice the amount of punks strutting thier pit bulls? Just like vehicles we drive or clothes we wear, dogs we own say alot about us and the image we want to have. I have a saint bernard, whats that say about me?
So this is pretty much the silliest thing I’ve read in a while. This story about a man weeping in a gas station stinks of exaggeration, at best. Oh, people.
And yes, it’s me.
In that case, I want ANOTHER SHRUBBERY!
I feel for the man whose dog was attacked. I can imagine that if my dog suffered a similar fate, it wouldnt’ matter where I was standing for the impact to hit and I too, would probably lose it in public. Who are we to judge when and where is appropriate to show raw emotion in reaction to such a shocking event??? His dog did not just get his “Ear chomped on by another dog”…. He was attacked and ripped to shreds.
Staffordshire Terriers are genetically inclined to attack other dogs, they were originally bred as bait/fight dogs, and as DNA would have it, they are wired as such. These traits are not bred-out…..Don’t believe me, just research it.
Much like how the Pit Bull breed symbolizes American gangs, drugs, crime, fighting, etc., Staffies are a status symbol in the same regard. In England, they have the same reputation as Pits do here in America, bred and acquired to gain respect, to intimidate, to use as a form of protection, and for crime. Staffordshire Terriers are also known as a “Tag Team” breed. When on the fight, one dog will attack the prey’s front legs, the other will grab the back legs. The victim is then felled, escape is impossible and it is then it is usually gutted, due to the short stature of a Staffie. Being ripped to shreds is likely due to jaw structure, powerful crushing mechanism, and viciousness that is exacerbated in a fight.
There are hundreds of stories that have appeared in recent English newspapers about Staffie attacks, mostly on other dogs. They seem like great family pets, and the cover works. They are trained to be family-friendly and lethal to 4-legged creatures. It doesn’t help that unless it is specifically bred to show/breed-standard, by a reputable, quality handler, the breed suffers through every litter.
Dreadful backyard breeding practices, the registration of puppies born via surrogate and under a long-dead stud or bitch, poor-quality stock, inter and cross-breeding, breeding for money, “the kids need to witness the miracle of birth”, “puppies are cute,” “I can’t afford to spay/neuter,” etc., and the idiots that purchase said dogs, thus fueling yet another litter, all contribute to the dreadful decline in quality breeds, promotion of continued practices, and total overpopulation.
My mother’s Afghan Hound was recently attacked by two Staffies whilst on a leashed walk in a very popular area. Due to his height, her dog only required surgery on his legs, and his underbelly was not too badly bitten. The irresponsible owner did not, nor has he ever had either dog under control or on a lead, has had previous complaints about his dogs, lives off his girlfriend in a subsidized house close my mother’s residence, and has since threatened to throw gas bombs through her windows and behead her dog, as she dared call the police during the attack. I would have to say that the majority of vicious Staffordshire terrier owners are representative of the breed.
