We moved here in 2005. Since then we have had several experiences with the local businesses.
I feel I must comment on Rocky Mountain Cabinet and Millworks. We hired them to redo our kitchen. The work was substandard in several areas.
We were not informed that premade cabinets were being used. Several times we emphasized that due to the kitchen being very small, every available space must be used.
*The premade cabinets lost over 5″ of space – cabinets were narrower. We did notice the corner cabinet and had them move the back of the cabinet to utilize 5″ at the back of that cabinet that would have been lost space.
*The silver drawer is 2″ narrower.
*The lazy susans are smaller and of poor quality. We are putting the original susans back in.
*The cabinet under the sink is approximately 6″ narrower, resulting in about 4 lost inches in the cabinet to the left.
*The bar is 5″ narrower.
*The mitered corners of the molding has gaps.
* The cupboard doors are uneven.
My son has also had an experience with a fence builder. In order to have it constructed with even tops on the boards, no gaps between the gate and sides, he had to insist and said he would get an attorney before paying for such poor quality work. He has had to rescrew the entire fence, as the staples were not holding.
So, I say, be very careful and research carefully. The business ethics of the local workers is VERY poor.

In these situations I think it is important to leverage the power of the internet. Sites like http://www.angieslist.com put the power in the consumers hand…use that power.
You know, I really hate to say it, but welcome to Idaho. The relaxed nature of most of our contracting laws makes for a large number of below standard contractors doing work across the state.
Also a lot of folks here have a built in principle of terminal forgiveness that they live by. Unfortunately it makes them easy prey for contractors who either don’t know what they’re doing, or just don’t care.
Just about any area you might live in has its share of high and low quality/ethical businesses. I wouldn’t think the local area and Idaho Falls has a higher percentage of substandard contractors than many others. It is true that you should do your research on any business you plan to hire. It only makes sense to see their work ahead of time and have in your work contract specific details of what materials are being used and what work is being done, and know what your rights are if they don’t live up to the contract.
We all get that knowledge thump in the head sometime; we just hope it doesn’t cost us too much when it happens!
I would like to comment on a local business that is OUTSTANDING in what they do. Weimer Heating and Air was hired to install a new furnace for my parents’ home this winter when theirs went out. They are elderly, so I went over to manage and supervise, to make sure there were no surprises. What great people, from the estimators to the installers, right down to the equipment they recommended and installed, we couldn’t have been happier with the service. The bill came in exactly as estimated, despite a small issue that called for an additional electrical box to be installed. Fantastic team of people.
I have one thing to say…. ALWAY check the BBB (Better Business Bureau) for who is good in any given area before forking out any significant amount of money. While a lot of businesses are NOT listed the ones that are, and are graded well, will usually do the job well, and if they don’t, will go to great efforts to make whatever it is that is wrong, right again.
This probably would have been a good post to follow up on this article already on this site. http://www.idahofallstoday.com/2007/02/05/idaho-business-complaints/

whoops!
Thanks Reader…..I kinda wondered about that too. Oh well. Nice post regardless. Welcome to the site Abillabongbelle.
Many years ago, my dad owned a company called Rocky Mountain Millworks. They were very well regarded in the area, and it makes me sad to know that someone is using the name for sub-standard practices. I don’t believe there is any way that these two businesses can be related, as my dad’s business has been gone for over 20 years.
I would be interested to know who is running this business.
Thanks reader, I popped into that thread and did some reading, this was a great board back then.
Sure thing untwisted. On other blogs, before I post, I often search for a topic first to see if it’s already used or being discussed, rather than starting a new thread.
Maybe that’s an idea – site moderators, before you allow new posts/articles, will you consider checking to see if it’s already an existing topic first? When I wrote an article way back, the site moderator then emailed me a few suggestions and ideas which made perfect sense. Saves numerous new postings about the exact same topics or questions, right?
I agree with readers statement. Even if a new poster doesn’t take the time to check the archives, it should be up to site admin to review past articles to keep from posting multiple topics about the same thing.

Sorry about the duplication!
