The Cyber Security Act of 2009

From a member (mEATfLAPs) of one of several internet communities that I frequent:

I’ve been hearing a lot about the Cyber Security Act of 2009 in the past month or so. This bill is not being covered much if at all by the regular news outlets. In case you don’t know what the CSA is, it can be likened to the Patriot Act, but for internet activity.

Put simply, the bill will allow the government to access any and all data on any network in the U.S. with no probable cause or warrant required. This means they can browse your email, social network accounts, absolutely anything. The kicker is if they find something illegal they can come after you for it even if they were not looking for said illegal material. Any pirated software, music, movies, illegal porn that you may have can land you in court if they happen to come across it. The act also grants the power to “shut down or limit the internet”.

This is the actual bill: Cyber Security Act of 2009.

Worrisome schtuff, if it has a chance in hell of passing.  What do you think?

I wouldn’t spend a lot of time worrying about the passage of this bill in it’s current form. Issues like back door access and very real problems with rights of personal privacy are going to tie this baby up in so may knots it won’t be funny.

The Patriot Act was a whole other kind of bird that was essentially written in the executive branch and handed off to a House of Representatives flunky named Jim Sensenbrenner. He submitted it on Oct 23, 2001. It was passed by the House on Oct 24. Passed by the Senate on Oct. 25, and signed into law on Oct 26. The whole deal was a travesty to our form of government.

Unless the Obama’s are up to the same sneaky business that the Bush’s were, we won’t have to worry about another ramrod being shoved through Congress.

But I’ll tell ya one thing for sure, the sun sure is nice on this bright spring day.

You only say that because you know I’m stuck here at work…not in the sun.
