Should midwives be regulated?

by Neal Larson March 30, 2009

The Idaho Legislature recently passed a midwiffery licensing bill that places some restrictions on midwives and mandates a minimum of care standard.  As a conservative I tend to oppose government regulation, but on this particular bill, I don’t see anything egregious. Some of the callers to my radio show — most, actually — disagreed and [...]

Politics, What Flavor Are You?

by untwisted March 27, 2009

Some of the current topics, and responses on this blog have put me in a reflective, if not judgmental mood.  There’s a common thread that loops it’s way here and it awakens a part of me that I’ve had a difficult time putting my finger on.  I think I’ve finally labeled it, but only through [...]

A local city ordinance only allows two dogs per household.

by Joe Plumber March 24, 2009

I just read an article published yesterday that stated the City of Shelley has an ordinance that restricts canine ownership to just two dogs per household. The last time this ordinance was actively discussed was over 33 years ago.
Why now, asks Linda Fitzpatrick?
Linda is the Shelley resident and dog owner that the story highlights. [...]

Local lawmaker supports the return of domestic horse slaughterhouses…

by Joe Plumber March 23, 2009

According to an AP article that I read today, State Rep. Tom Loertscher (R-31) is asking Congress to back the return of horse slaughterhouses here in the US. Loertscher believes this move would ease financial strains on local ranchers, farmers and horse owners, as “most people can’t afford to ship their horses outside the U.S. [...]

The Fairness Doctrine: a violation of the 1st Amendment or necessary for fairness and balance?

by Joe Plumber March 20, 2009

Currently, members of Congress are considering legislation that would reinstate a federal communications policy known as the “fairness doctrine.” At the same time, several members of Congress have drafted legislation that would do just the opposite and “prevent the Federal Communications Commission from repromulgating the fairness doctrine.” (HR.226, S.34, S.62, S.160, and an amendment to [...]

Taking a “bite” out of crime…
Things seem to get a little out of hand on St. Patrick’s Day, apparently. Merie McAskill (the fact that she’s Irish makes this story even funnier) apparently started arguing with the bartender at Muddy’s in Idaho Falls. When Miss McCaskill was being escorted out of [...]

I am really grateful the Rep. Tom Loertscher takes the time to write his impressions of the legislature each week. In other parts of Legislative District 31, his articles are carried in the newspaper. At any rate, here is his latest, for your reading pleasure.
“It seems strange to get to the Capital [...]

Hey. I just started a “meetup” group for people in the Idaho Falls area that want to make friends (it’s a sometimes difficult place to do just that). Not sure if I’m supposed to put links on here (my apologies, if I did it wrongly).

The Otter Oddity: The Stimulus Bill in Idaho Going to Waste

by Jeremy Plothow March 14, 2009

A few weeks back, Governor C.L. Otter was publically debating whether or not he would be taking any of the money provided by the Democrat-backed and highly politically divisive Economic Stimulus Bill.  There was a sense in America that the bill’s fate rested in the hands of partisan politics as usual – “red” states were [...]

Do Renters Truly Destroy Neighborhoods?

by my4sons March 12, 2009

I just read a recent MSN article, entitled Many towns tightening “no rental” rules. The fact that homeowners nationwide are having a tough time selling their homes, given the current economic situation and housing markets, is no surprise. However, the article said many Home Owners Associations (HOA’s), and even some community leaders, across the nation [...]

City proposes a face-lift for Memorial Drive and the riverfront. Is it cause for concern? What about downtown parking and traffic?

by Joe Plumber March 12, 2009

I knew the City of Idaho Falls was considering a few new concepts regarding downtown’s Memorial Drive. I had gathered the info for a future post, yet felt it might be too early to start the conversation until things solidified. Now that the Post Register has the story on their front page, I guess now [...]

Today, March 6, the Idaho House of Representatives voted, 52-17, to consolidate election dates in an effort to boost voter turnout and transparency. Assuming the [...]
