I just don’t understand how businesses in Idaho can get away with treating employees like disposable products. We’re not people anymore just tools meant for nothing more than assist the higher ends of the corporate ladder get rich. From my own personal experience and as witness to many others the lowest paid are by far the hardest working. Where in all those orientations, associate acknowledgment forms, terms and conditions and misc. forms we sign upon being hired, does it state that you will be subject to favoritism, wage based on personal judgement against your personality not your work performance.?? I also don’t recall ever seeing a poster letting us know that we may be hired for a lower wage than promised, regardless of experience and that the higher managements friends with no experience will be hired at 3 dollars more an hour and there is nothing we can do about it.In fact at the mere mention of another asociates wage can be means for termination. WOW what happened to equal rights!! Am I the only one who can see this?????

It sucks, I’ll give you that, but you work your way up. These businesses do operate by the law though, and have every right not to pay you more than they think you’re worth…if you really have a problem with it, quit complaining and build something. Work for yourself, become your own boss…then you can start bitching about real problems, like state and federal taxes, insurance for employees, and that rotten nephew that your wife made you hire…
Unfortunately, most people don’t realize until it is too late that almost every job in the world is “at will”, meaning your boss can fire you whenever he/she wants, for any reason, as long as they don’t commit any type of discrimination (and that is only if the employer employs 35 or more people). The exceptions are few and far between, such as tenured professors and employment “contracts” (true contracts and not just some rules and regulations you agree to or an employee manual, etc.).
The best thing to do? Get all the education you can: with low-interest student loans and outright grants available to all, it has never been easier to get as much education as possible at a very low cost….even on the job training and training seminars are ways of making yourself invaluable to a company….or even opening your own business in some manner, where you only have to answer to yourself. . . .
Getting an education and/or opening up your own shop, won’t stop the push to treat employee’s as though they are slaves, have no rights, and be treated as lower leveled humans, if human at all. A lot of employers are egotistic, and will not change. It’s about that and the bottom line. Fortunately, in the future, a revolution will arise, and things will hopefully change, as they always have. People will get sick and tired of it, and changes will occur, thank God. Selfish egotistic employers will pay, and the customer and employee, will rule.
If you’re not happy with your job or your employer get a new job or like Marcus said, start your own business. I’ve held dozens of jobs in every field you can imagine and I’ve never had a problem with a boss mis-treating me. You do your work and you do it well and you won’t have a problem. You talk about all these issues, but you don’t talk about the work ethic of the individual. Sure some people in management let it go to their head, but if they’ve made your life that miserable than either take it up with his boss or get a new job. If you’re busting your butt and not giving the boss anything to complain about, there shouldn’t be a problem. Like Easterner said, it’s all about education. The more education you have the better job you’ll get and you won’t have to worry about measly pay and bosses with attitudes. Change comes from within. The sooner you realize that the better off you’ll be.
I think y’all need to read Barbara Ehrenreich’s “Nickled and Dimed” and “Bait and Switch,” and, frankly, I think you’ll have a bit more sympathy for taajml. I’ve been in employment situations where I was the problem. I’ve been in employment situations where the employer/company is the problem. I’ve seen people start up their own businesses because they’re tired of getting walked on and proceed to walk all over their own employees in the process. And while education is a good approach, like taajml I’ve seen better-qualified and better-educated people passed over for one of the boss’ buddies.
To taajml: Maybe it’s true in your case that the hardest-working people are paid the least. But at least you know you’re working hard, doing your job. Keep that up. Don’t slack off because someobody’s getting better treatment. You’ll lose your integrity, and that’s difficult to get back. And some places are just armpits to work at. I know — I’ve worked at a few I won’t name here. But get that experience, work hard, and eventually, you’ll be rewarded.
I own my own business, and have for about 8 years. Before I started this, I worked for a local company for over 18 years. I loved the people, and the job was ok most of the time, but there were things that I didn’t agree with, and a lot of times the way things were run struck me as quite stupid.
Eight years of being my own boss later, I have a totally different perspective on the way things were run at my previous job. Just as when your children grow up and move away and suddenly realize that you are not an idiot after all, I see things very differently now.
I have much greater respect for my supervisor from my old job, she is much smarter than I ever gave her credit for. Also, most (maybe not all) off the policies that I questioned at that job make perfect sense now.
It could also be that I am that much older now, but I see things differently, even though I only have myself to boss around. Step back for a moment, or talk to your friends about their job situations. and things may not really be as bad as you think.
I worked my way ‘up’ thru the employment of a well known retailer, Sacrificed too many years of heartache, thru years of public torment.
Whether it be do to the holidays, lack of the reciept for manufacters warranty or just a customer needing someone to vent on.It is not easy nor profitable to anyone in the retail world.
I, myself, find my children blame me for the life I was able to provide them with. No matter the abuse I endured. Children never fully appreciate their parents [together or single] until they are gone.
Even the people greeter has to endure vulgarities from the public…when just trying to enforce the job provided to them.
I know now that what the public was seeing all those years. As I frequent public establishments, I note the bad attitudes, gross piercings and tattoos. If they are covered by gauze, I know I really do not want to know what they cover. especially if if in a food enviroment.
Tongue piercings are the worst, most people are all so proud too have them and talk with a lisp. It makes it all too real to me when I pickup my grandchild from daycare, and cannot understand what girl employed by the daycare is telling me. In reality, I would pay more for my grandchilds care provider ‘not to have such conflicting piercings.
Then.. How about the boom boys of the hood.
Was at Scenic Falls making a business deposit, white Pontiac comes in some good ole boy at the wheel, windows down, soon as he sees dirty looks he cranks the tunes… If I had time I would have followed this guy in to see what business he represents… he had a business bank bag in his hand… But I do not think he would have cared that his vulgar music was offensive to me…My…My…My…
Would not do any good to vocalize my opinion, Its all gone too far now.
As a small business owner I have learned that many employees don’t really care a thing about the business that they work for. All they want is a fat paycheck at the end of the week and could care less at the end of the day if a company goes in the red. Gone are the days when folks served apprenticeships and actually worked for free (or paid to work) in order to learn a craft or trade. Most people don’t realize the cost companies have to pay just to have an employee. The time and training, insurance fees and taxes. And for what… Everyone else gets paid before the owner. Good thing is… if you don’t like it… quit complaining and do something about it. Oh shucks… having no job is worse that putting up with a dumb boss. Or you could join the union… that did wonders for GM.
I’m a small business owner as well and all of my employees love working for me. We’re like one big happy family. Even though I only have 23 people that work for me, we all get along great and enjoy what we do. I’ve found that if you treat your employees well, they’ll work hard and give you an honest days work for an honest days pay.
Jasmine you sound like a great boss and a business owner who “gets it”. Far too many managers have the mentality of, “The floggings will continue until morale improves!” There are so many poor employees today because most realize that they do not matter one bit to their employers and most employers will happily fire people any time they can in order to save a few bucks or keep shaving away benefits until they just give up and look for work elsewhere. The entire employee / employer ethic in this country has become seriously dysfunctional.
One thing to keep in mind when your working…IS YOUR BOSS IS YOUR BOSS if if he is the owner…THEN HE OWNS YOU!!!! I think a business owner should have the choice to fire who ever whenever and without reason. I think if some guys wants to open a store and only hire women who are 5′4 and 123 lbs that should be his decision. I am NOT saying it would be right…but it is his business. Would you let anyone come into your house? I think not…so why should they let anyone in their business?.
The line stops at the point in which the “Boss” expects you to be his/her slave. I am no slave! And I am grateful, I have the ability to tell them off, because I do not need the job. I do it as something to get me out of the house. I make too much money in house, then to play silly boss games at work. I have a life thank God. And the boss can put the ego, back in the pocket, as far as I am concerned.
