Drive Safely, Wayne

Monday, many heard about the passing of Wayne Richards. Wayne Richards may have had the most recognized voice in Southeast Idaho. He was heard daily by thousands on the morning KLCE (Classy 97) radio program, countless radio commercials, and the voice of the 4th of July fireworks in Idaho Falls.
Wayne was reportedly on a family vacation to Hawaii snorkeling just 10 yards off shore when someone noticed he wasn’t moving. It was reported that they quickly brought him to shore and performed CPR for 15 minutes until the ambulance arrived. He was then taken to a local hospital where they tried to revive him.
Many people have noticed the “Drive Safely, Wayne” messages around town. I heard the background behind this comes in part from the co-host of the morning radio show, Liza. Liza supposedly was generous with the statement “Love ya”. Wayne supposedly considered the “love” term more precious and reserved it mostly for his family. Later on , in response to Liza’s “you know I love you, Wayne” type statements, he started to reply with “Drive Safely”, which Liza would interpret to mean “love you too.” It was Wayne’s way of showing affection while still protecting the precious “love” word for his family. The way I understand it is the last time Liza saw Wayne as he was getting ready to head off on his vacation, she used his line, and said “Drive Safely, Wayne.” or, in other words, “Love ya, Wyane”.
Now that phrase has grown roots in the hearts of many here in southeast Idaho, and people are expressing their love, appreciation, and memory of the great Wayne Richards by putting up their own “Drive Safely, Wayne” messages -a great way to remember a great influential person.
Wayne, you’ve touched countless lives throughout your life. Thank you for your contribution to our community. And drive safely, Wayne.
Wayne Richards funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 11am at the North LDS Stake Center next to the LDS temple.

I’ve never met Wayne but his one-of-a-kind voice and the fireworks seemed to go hand in hand. There are some people at work who knew him and they were all in shock and saddened. He will be greatly missed and my thoughts are prayers are with Wayne’s family. His voice will go with you.
