Olympics - U.S. Whips the Chinese Team

Ok my wife is out of town and instead of going out and buying some beer I got hooked on the Olympics. I love the whole Phelps thing, track and field, the gymnastics etc etc. I’m all over it and I haven’t been getting much sleep lately…so these Olympics better wrap it up soon because I am sleep deprived in a big way.
The Women’s Beach Vball team just won the GOLD!! Americans Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor defeated the Chinese duo of Tian Jia and Wang Jie to win the gold medal in women’s beach volleyball at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. One of the Chinese players (Tian) started faking an injury near the end when they were in danger of losing the match…she used the 5 minute medical time out hoping interrupt the momentum of our team. I realize that sounds like speculation in print, but if you watched the match (and the examples where she did this in previous matches) it would be obvious to you. Now that is smart, but it’s also dirty and desperate…so I’m glad we kicked their trash.
Anyone else into the Olympics? Ok I’m done….probably going to bed at 2am again. Olympics…you need to go away. Keep walking.

I think this has been one of the best Olympics ever. From the opening ceremony, which was absolutely breathtaking, to the womens volleyball that just got gold! I’ve been watching everyday, each night and I’m so proud of our athletes and the great job they’ve done as well as the great sportsmanship they’ve portrayed.
Growing up near the beach, I’ve had a few opportunities to see Misty May & Kerri Walsh compete live as well as Karch Karily and his partners when he used to compete. Every game Misty & Kerri played during this years olympics was very exciting and I’m simply amazed at the level at which they play, not having lost a game or even a match in 2 years.
Thanks Bluernote for starting this post! I was hoping someboy would. I’ve mentioned it in the chatbox a couple of times, but not too many people seemed very interested. Even if you’re not into sports, I think everyone should watch a few of the games if only to support our athletes and our country. But the fact that these games have been so exciting with some really close match-ups, has made it all the better.
Our womens gymnastics did amazing as well, although I do think they were robbed a few times with lower scores than they should have received. Our men did a great job also, even though Paul Hamm (the mens favorite for a gold or two) had to drop out due to a broken hand that hadn’t fully recovered in time for the Olympics. The rest of the team stepped up and did a great job.
And what can I say about Micheal Phelps? That guy is just amazing. To swim at the level he did, winning 8 gold medals and out of those 8 races, breaking 7 world records was absolutely incredible.
Thanks again for the post Bluer…..I’m right there with you with the sleep deprivation! ![]()
Nick Symmonds won the qualifier…..I could tell it wasn’t as easy for him as it was in other domestic 800m videos I’ve seen him in, but these are the best in the world he’s competing against. In the post interview he said after not racing for seven days, this race really helped warm him up for his semi-finals race tomorrow.
Anything can happen in the actual race, but I know Nick Symmonds is good enough to win.
Our family has been watching the Olympics each night also. Although the kids are in bed by 9 and the wife and I usually don’t make it past 10-10:30 We Tivo everything we miss as well as ESPN’s coverage.
I think NBC has done a great job covering the games this year (much better than years past), but, I think they need to get rid off all daytime programming and just run Olympics 24/7, so they can show more than just the “popular” sports. After all, it’s only for 2 weeks, every 4 years. Regardless, the coverage has been great and having it all in high defintion has been even better. I heard this years Olympics has had the highest ratings ever, not sure if that’s true or not. But I do think its been one of the most exciting games ever. I agree with CR: the opening ceremony was amazing, the best opening ceremony I’ve ever seen since watching the Olympics.
I’m looking forward to the finals of Mens Basketball, Rhythmic Gymnastics and Table Tennis.
So far we’re still in the lead with the most medals at 95, with China close behind at 83. But they are obliterating us in the Gold medals at 46, whereas the US only has 29. Still a job well done for Team USA!
Good post BluerNote!
CR67, my fear is that McDonald’s will jump on the fact that the Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt (GREAT name, BTW!) ate Chicken McNuggets before the 100 m . . . . for both breakfast and lunch……
Can’t you just see poor Usain being used like a Jamaican Jared Fogel, the Subway guy??? “I ate at McDonald’s and I won two gold medals at the Olympics”. . . .
Well the games are over and the US came away with 110 total medals, 36 of which were gold. China came in a close second with 100 total medals, 51 of which were gold. The closing ceremony was just as amazing as the opening ceremony was and I have to say I think the people of Beijing did an incredible job hosting the Olympics. It was without a doubt one of the best Olympics I’ve ever watched and in 2012 London will have a tough time trying to top or even come close to the production that Beijing put on for the world. Hats off to all the people that made this happen! And hats off to all of our olympians who not only brought home a medal but who competed for our country.

And by the way, I can easily record the Olympics so I don’t have to stay up late…therefore I have zero excuse. I just like seeing it live. I’m also one of the few people I know who loves table tennis/ping pong so I was hoping to catch some of that on TV. No luck. I’m looking forward to Nick Symmonds (from Boise) racing. He has a great kick.
