More Idaho taxpayers trust Democrats and are investing in the Idaho Democratic Party than any other political party through the state’s voluntary tax return check-off! That’s according to the funds distributed today by the bi-annual Idaho Election Campaign Fund – also called the “political party check-off box.” The Idaho Democratic Party received $35,540 for the tax year ending in 2007, that’s $4,469 more than the Republican Party received. Additionally, the Libertarian and Constitution party will each take a nominal piece of the Fund, $2,854 and $2,144 respectively. “Ordinary taxpayers know that Democrats fight for low and fair taxes and invest those funds in Idaho communities,” Jim Hansen, Executive Director of the Idaho Democratic Party, said Tuesday. “That is why when so many Idahoans fill out their tax forms, they designated $1 to the Idaho Democrats.” “By contrast, Republicans have shifted heavier tax burdens on working families because of all the tax cuts and tax breaks they have given away to wealthy interests. And Republicans refuse to adequately invest in assets like schools, transportation and sustainable energy that are necessary for working families and small businesses to succeed.” Hansen added. “The beauty of the tax check-off is that all taxpayers are treated equally. A taxpayer can only designate $1 per person. A dollar from a wage-earner who makes just enough to cover his or her family bills is the same as a dollar from a wealthy investor. Democrats succeed when thousands of people donate small amounts. Republicans prefer big bucks from a handful of well-healed special interests.” “The pundits may still see red when they look at Idaho, but the ordinary taxpayers of Idaho are turning it blue, one dollar at a time,” Hansen said. Why? Because Idaho taxpayers are upset that the Bush Administration and the Republicans have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on an unnecessary war. Thirty of Idaho’s uniformed sons and daughters have made the ultimate sacrifice, while another 275 have become war casualties; losing arms, legs, sight, hearing, or other vital body parts. While Bush and the Republicans have been focused on the wrong war, they have let our nation’s infrastructure crumble. And Idaho Republicans have used their lock on Idaho government to give even more breaks to big corporations while neglecting investments in roads, schools and rural communities. “I predict that two years from now, when the people see that Democrats in government and they are working on behalf of all the people, not just the wealthy elite, even more working people will designate a dollar for the Democrats.”

Joe, I can hardly believe you published party propaganda like this.
This is a prime example of why I have a hard time trusting the local Democrats. An accurate assessment and title of this article may have been “Democrats earn more with check-off dollars”, but to extract publish as fact that Democrats are trusted more is hopeful at best and more likely a dishonest.
My impression is If that was true, we’d have Democrats across the board in Congress and the Senate, and Idaho would be voting Democrat for president in the past election.
Then to tie the dollars earned to the war in Iraq. If there is a study on the reason people donated the dollars or didn’t donate the dollars it should be referenced.
More likely is that the Democrats mobilized their followers better this tax season, and Republicans are content that things are going well and their favored candidates will continue to win the votes.
Then to say “Republicans prefer big bucks from a handful of well-healed special interests.”, I have never heard any Republican or Democrat say what dollars they “prefer”.
I’m someone who votes for both Democrats and Republicans, but it’s things like this that make me feel bad for the good Democrats who deserve to win in the elections – it makes them all look bad.
I’d also be curious to hear if the tax commission would release the number of tax returns where no such donation or checkoff is noted — taxpayers have the option to leave that question blank, which is what I do.
I would like to see a more complete set of statistics, too…but I do believe that the actual dollar figures are probably correct.
If that truly is their press release, it sucks and they need a better writer. Plus the phrase is “well heeled” not “well healed”.
But, that’s just snarkiness on my part and I probably shouldn’t complain. Given that I dislike the Republican lock on this state, I should just rejoice in the overall message which is that it seems that in some ways, Idaho is starting to grow out of its love affair with all things red and may finally be getting a little more purple, which is how I like things politically.
Big deal if more folks checked the box for Democrats. There are several very good plausible reasons why: 1) Democrats generally trust the government to spend their money more than Republicans do….thus, they are more than happy to have the State Government give money to them; 2) Republicans give monies to candidates directly more disproportionately than Democrats in this state do….thus, they avoid the middle man. What is so wrong with that?
Conversely, if the story were: Republicans give more money to candidates, therefore Republicans are more trustworthy, Democrats would be up in arms claiming that just because you have deep pockets, it doesn’t mean your candidates are more trustworthy…..look at the liar and fink by the name of Larry Craig to prove my point!
