[Editor's Note: As mentioned in the comments, this warning in the title and first paragraph is based on a hoax (see http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.shtm) . In other words, cell numbers are not going to be released to telemarketers as described. However, the information that CR67 shared in the second paragraph is very useful and we're glad he posted it.]

As of 7/25/08 ALL cell phone numbers have gone public.

Cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies on 7-25-08 and you may start to receive sale calls. Your minutes will be used for the call. Depending on your contract you could pay extra if your minute allotment is used up. Not to mention the annoyance.

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number OR go to https://www.donotcall.gov to register both your home phone and your cell phone.

If you’re like me and can’t stand telemarketers, it pays to take a few moments of your time to put your numbers on the Do Not Call list.

“Cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies on 7-25-08 and you may start to receive sale calls. ”

May start? I am not only on the Do Not Call list but finally reported this number 877-218-0169. It’s a recorded message and has received many complaints http://www.callercomplaints.com/SearchResult.aspx?Phone=877-218-0169
I receive this call at least 5x’s per week. There is one other that I also recently reported that is pretty much the same kind of call although I don’t have the number handy.

The unfortunate thing is that many of us are giving up our land lines for the more convenient cell phones. They don’t have to have a list of Cell numbers, they just call.

Thank you for the number. I’ll try it.

CR67 – did you get something in your email inbox about this?

Maybe check out this link: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2005/04/dnc.shtm

I to do get an occasional phone solicitation, but usually because I was dumb and gave my cell phone as my home phone, which I do because I don’t have a home phone because I use my cell phone for a home phone. Does that make any sense?

Thanks CR67!

Interesting! Thanks very much for pointing that out to me and I apologize to everyone for making a post on this issue without completely investigating it first.
Thanks again!

Mr.Eagle, you can delete this post if you want to prevent this obvious rumor from spreading anymore.
Thx

I wouldn’t delete it. I think it’s important for people to know who and where to call to avoid the solicitations. They are a headache and where so many people are giving up their landlines in favor of cell phones, I think it’s good to let them know that they can put their cells on the list to at least try to avoid them.

You have a point there. Plus I’m sure it won’t hurt if they put their cell number on the list. I’m just frustrated at myself for posting this in the first place. I’m usually pretty good about looking into these things first before passing them on.
oh well. :)

After forwarding a few emails that were not as “legit” as i thought they were, I started checking http://www.snopes.com before I forward anything that seems important. It’s saved me some embarrassment, and I need all the help I can get lol.

Heck no, don’t have it deleted! You did right by bringing it up. Just remember to not put your cell phone number in the home number slot when you fill out info.

Thanks CR67

I received another call earlier today from that irritating recorded “You’ve just won” number- 877-218-0169.
Once again, I have filed a complaint against this number. I am not only on the Do not call list, but it’s a cell phone they are calling and no, I haven’t done business with them.

I am wondering what good the Do not call list is if they won’t do anything when you report numbers? I’ve been on this list since it became available, have updated regularly, etc. But I’m still getting calls from the same number.
