Gas prices in Idaho

by Open Mind July 30, 2008

I know we’ve talked about this a LOT, but here goes again.
So the gas prices nationally are dropping, but here they’re not, at least not substantially. The excuse is that we’re not using as much gas, and there’s still expensive gas sitting in the tanks. Presumably, once the tanks are topped off with less expensive [...]

Insurance woes

by aok July 30, 2008

Today I bought a prescription that I have used for 12 years.  Normally my insurance pays all but $25.00 of a one month supply for these pills.  This has gone up from $7.00 that I was paying 12 years ago. Not bad right? It eats at the pocket book for sure, especially if it isn’t [...]

Are there more drownings this year?

by Open Mind July 28, 2008

Over the weekend, it looks like another person drowned in the Snake River near Idaho Falls. That’s two in two or three weeks. Another guy drowned on Upper Palisades Lake earlier, and of course the teenager from Pocatello that drowned in the Snake near Massacre Rocks.
I should also mention the family that got into trouble [...]

IF City Taxes to Increase?

by Nemesis July 27, 2008

Per the Post Register today, there is a very real possibility that the City of Idaho Falls is about to raise property taxes.  The PR estimate was a $23 annual increase on a home worth $150,000.

Why the need for the increase?  Was the recent 2.86% levy decrease a bit premature?

The article mentions that the mayor [...]

I’m a Reluctant Carnivore

by Nemesis July 26, 2008

I grew up eating everything. I mean everything. I’m from Appalachia, and we ate squirrels, bullfrogs and crawdads.  I moved to rural Idaho where we had the usual farm animals, made them into family pets, then we ate them, too. I like the taste of meat, for the most part. Especially charred on the grill (exactly [...]

Obama’s appearance in Europe

by Open Mind July 24, 2008

I’ve been curious about what you all think of Barack Obama’s appearance in Europe. I’m not particularly a fan of Obama, but I suppose there’s some sense of historic impact in his visit and his rhetoric.
While I find him to be an intriguing figure, a smooth, articulate, respectable person — I believe he’s somewhat of [...]

Rammel, Risch… the saga continues.

by Open Mind July 23, 2008

There’s a story out this morning (Post Register) about the two conservative US Senate candidates in Idaho. Apparently Rex Rammell owes some money to former Congressman George Hansen, about $100K. This info, unflattering to Rammell, was leaked to the media. Rammell says it was Risch supporter Bart Davis who accessed the info without permission from [...]

A Chain Saw Bicycle?

by Open Mind July 21, 2008

As gas prices get higher, people get creative. I was jumping around the Internet and found hordes of videos like this on YouTube. People are putting chain saw and weed wacker engines on their bicycles to get around. It sounds hilariously stupid and it makes for one noise noisy bike, but I have to admit, [...]

Step Parents and Discipline

by Nemesis July 19, 2008

I am a stepmother.  I had stepparents.  My daughters had stepparents.  The concept of stepparenting in our society is here to stay.

I was asked to write this post by another site guest who wondered, “Should stepparents discipline their stepchildren?”   It’s a tricky subject.  First it has to be decided what the concept of discipline is, [...]

City of Idaho Falls adding texting service

by Open Mind July 17, 2008

The Post Register says this morning that the city of Idaho Falls will add a text messaging service.
District 93 has had it for a couple of years now, and it’s proved to be pretty valuable whenever there’s been a school closure, cancellation, or other situation.
Now the Idaho Falls city government is going to add a [...]

New Yorker Magazine Cover…Too Much?

by Nemesis July 14, 2008

The New Yorker Magazine has a motherlode issue on the stands…a collector’s issue if there ever was one.  It shows Barack Obama and his wife Michelle in the White House.  However:
Obama is garbed in traditional Arabic clothing and headdress, and Michelle is in military fatigues with an automatic rifle (and the ammunition sash).  On the [...]

Idaho Falls Community Pathways – Supporting People Powered Transportation!

by Joe Eagle July 14, 2008

I received a friendly email this week from from Chris Stanley, President of Idaho Falls Community Pathways. They are the ones behind the new crosswalk flags popping up around town.

I wanted to make you aware of our organization, Idaho Falls Community Pathways, formed about a year ago. We are working [...]

13,000 iPod Songs and Counting

by Nemesis July 13, 2008

I love music. I was raised on old country, Hank Williams Sr, Patsy Cline, etc. 50s doowop. I still like bluegrass, and folk music. I know all the 60s and 70s radio oldies by heart. By the 80s I was into the hard stuff, headbangin’ and big hair men. [...]

Would you be for reducing the speed limit?

by Open Mind July 9, 2008

I was reading some different blogs and news sites this morning and found this story about Senator Warner from Virginia asking the federal government to determine what speed limit would optimize fuel efficiency given current technology… possibly hinting at a national speed limit.

Brad Stowell back in prison

by Open Mind July 8, 2008

Brad Stowell apparently violated his probation by not having a job, and getting a laptop. He’s back in prison now. My guess is that the parole board, after catching all the flack they caught, was looking for a reason to put him back in prison.
I’m glad he’s back behind bars. He has no business enjoying [...]

Plant a Row for the Hungry

by Nemesis July 6, 2008

Apparently there is a national campaign for folks to plant extra garden rows of fresh produce and donate the extra food to the local food banks and homeless shelters. Fresh produce is a premium item, difficult to afford on a fixed budget, and donations of such are very welcome. It’s not something that [...]

Helicopter Parents

by Find Humor in Life July 3, 2008

Helicopter parents are defined as those parents who have gone beyond devoted nurturing of their child or children into an extreme involvement of their life, particularly in the area concerning educational institutions. College administrators and professors reported this trend at the start of 2000.[1] The parents are not only at the university level, however; I [...]

Waste cleanup deal looking like a good move

by Open Mind July 2, 2008

It’s taken them long enough fighting things out in the courts, but yesterday’s announcement by the Governor about the waste cleanup at the site must be a good thing, at least for Idaho.
Watching the news and seeing Cecil Andrus along with Phil Batt and Butch Otter praising the same thing, I thought to myself, “This [...]
