Support Your Local High School?

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the newsletter or RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Perhaps your first question when you read the title of the article was ‘I don’t have any kids attending high school, so what on earth do they have that would interest me?’, or even ‘Why should I support the high school?’ It is a fact, after all, that most of the people who attend high school activities are either students or parents of students. Being a student at one of our local high schools, I know from experience that nothing excites us more than having a big crowd at our activities. We have a wide variety of activities extending from the normal sports, which usually have a $5 fee for adults to enter, to music concerts put on by the choirs and bands, which are usually free or have a very cheap admittance fee. All of the schools have great drama programs as well. So are you a sports fan, in love with the sound of a good orchestra, or do you just want a good laugh from a comedy? The high schools have ways for you to get all of these joys without high prices, and please don’t think that just because high school students would be the stars the event would be less quality. Surprisingly enough (or perhaps not), Idaho Falls teenagers are AMAZINGLY talented. Our cheerleaders and newspapers usually take home national awards. In the All-State Music Convention, all four of our schools are VERY well represented by band (wind/percussion), orchestra (strings) and choir (vocal) students. The Idaho Falls/Skyline Rival Football game the Emotion Bowl was ranked 7th high school rivalry in the nation by Sports Illustrated. And the drama plays? Always worth a good laugh or two.

So, have I perhaps gotten a spark of interest out of some of you? Great! Trust me; we teenagers would LOVE for you to attend. Why else do we spend hours upon hours practicing our songs or plays? Sure, personal joy from a good performance or a victory is nice, but it’s even better with applause and compliments to show that other people enjoyed our hard work as well. You’re probably wondering how exactly you can find out the times and dates of some of these events. I’m not sure I could name one person in the entire city who doesn’t know a family with a teenager who attends a high school. Usually students can find out for you. Don’t know a student, or perhaps they didn’t know times or dates (yes, there are sadly some students who really don’t care)? The schools all have calendars that you can usually access from their main site. All four schools have most of their events listed at highschoolsports.net. Just select the state (Idaho of course) and the school you want. Then you just go to schedules to see events. Skyline also has a school calendar at http://www.d91.k12.id.us/skyline/calendar/shscalendar.htm, but I wasn’t able to find any other calendars at the other school websites. I would love to be able to tell you all about all the events at all the schools, but unfortunately I’m only one student and I can only attend one school. However, I can try to tell you as much as I can about all four schools.

For example, what sort of things should you keep an eye on this month?

Sports: Hillcrest vs. Bonneville GBB Wed. the 9th at Bonneville starting at 6. IF vs. Skyline BB Wed. the 16th at IF starting at 6. IF vs. Skyline GBB Thurs the 17th at Skyline starting at 6. Hillcrest vs. Bonneville BB Fri. the 18th at Hillcrest starting at 6. Tiger-Grizz Invitational for wrestling the 18th and 19th at Skyline

Music: All four schools will be represented at Idaho All-State Concert which will be at ISU’s Steven’s Performing Arts Center Saturday the 26th. The choir concert is at 2 Pm and the band/orchestra concert is at 4. Bonneville/Hillcrest combined jazz concert will be Tuesday the 15th but more information has yet to be posted.

Unfortunately, no drama events are currently listed at any of the school sites.

Did you find anything on this that may have even sparked a remote amount of interest? On behalf of everyone participating, I ask you to PLEASE at least try it, give it a shot! It’s not NBA, but it’s not expensive either. We have talent, and our games get pretty exciting. If you didn’t find what you were looking for in this very short synopsis of events I encourage you to check it out for yourself! Call the school or check out the school’s website, or their calendar on highschoolsports.net. Choose someone to root for and get involved! We will do our best not to disappoint you

You make a good point, that we have resources in our community that we don’t think to access unless we have students who attend those schools.

I keep saying I’d be a fan of college football and attend the games (right now I’m an NFL freak too far away from my team) if I just lived in a college town…yet here I am with 4 local schools that all have teams I could take the time to support.

Plus there are debate tournaments, speech events, quiz bowl events, all sorts of things that students do that could use an audience or cheering section, if you’re not into sports events or the theater.

My two daughters and one son-in-law went to IF, one son-in-law went to Hillcrest, and my stepkids go to Skyline.

So I have no excuse for not participating in all the public events these schools offer…

Thanks again for the reminder.

I’m not into sports but I like theater. Does anyone know when is Skyline’s next theater production? Or IF High School or Bonneville’s or Hillcrest’s next theater productions?

As of now I don’t believe Skyline is planning any plays, they may have one later or next tri, I’m not sure about IF or Bonneville, but I heard a rumor that Hillcrest will have a performance later this month, anyone know anything more abou that? Oh, also!!! Bye Bye Birdie has just been announced as this years D91 Musical, sure to be amazingly since st of the leads are my bestest friends lol! I may even be in the orchestra (depending on the work schedule) Definately a must see. Tickets are usually around 5 or 7 dollars, I forget, but yeah, they put SO much work into it its usually amazing!

Nemesis: Skyline’s football team shows promise next year if Michael Berger gets the quarterback position.

And, being a band geek, I must drop the bomb, PLEASE try to come to the All-State concerts. We competed with kids from ALL over Idaho. My particular instrument had 80 competitors, so I am SOOO happy to have made it. Really, its a big deal

Also I’d like to drop a hint now about something I going to begin advertising heavily next month which is Skyline Jazz Band and the Doug Manwaring(sp?) Jazz Band Big Band Sound Dance which will be held at the shilo Feb 23rd. If you like Jazz its a GREAT way to hear a community band with adults and a High SChool band playing side by side. If you don’t like Jazz there will surely be a few latin tunes as well as rock (and I hear Skyline has a song that labels itself ‘disco’? should be interesting)

Music girl - thank you so much for bringing all of this to our attention. I forget high schools can be a source of entertainment for family or date nights, be it plays, games, music events, etc. If you have the time, please keep us posted on the newest and latest whenever you get a chance. You’re right, having kids much younger than this age makes me forget worthwhile things are happening in the schools. Thanks!

P.S. Have fun at the Stevens Performing Arts Center - what a magnificent facility to come to this area!

reader:: Having kids younger than high school age (unless they’re like 2 or younger)is one of the BEST excuses to go to the events. It gives them something to look forward to, they can decide what they want to try, and it gives them role models. I’ll admit that many of our teenagers nowadays aren’t the best models, but most of the ones dedicated to an activity don’t have time to be bad. Being in a leadership position in the band where people notice me a lot (sometimes more than I would like) I would LOVE for a child to come up and ask me about band or something of the sort, we all believe in what we’re doing and are constant recruiters.

Music girl - from a fellow band geek (long time ago) I agree it’s a great way to keep kids active and involved in something. Music programs are highly underrated by the public and even some schools. It’s far more than just playing some music. It teaches discipline, structure, teamwork and leadership. And studies have shown that those who study music for a few years have actual permanent brain circuitry changes that allow them to be more successful in other areas like math and science. Basically because music IS math, but much more fun than calculus.

CafeDelSol: Nice to meet a fellow band geek. YEs, it is proven that we tend to have better workin brains, not just by scientists, but by a nosy band director who i’m very near to who says he likes to hold his own study and just glances at GPAs of his students, a large majority of whom have a 4.0

And to everyone else, just a little update. I went to a basketball game last night and it was SUPER intense, really amazing. The whole crowd was on their feet, a great way to spend your evening.

Fellow band geek here too! (from WAY back as well) I’d have to agree, that those kids that keep themselves busy with extra curricular activities such as sports, band, drama club, etc….DO tend to make better grades and get in less trouble. In Jr & Sr high school, I didn’t have time to get into trouble. I was up every morning at 5am for piano lessons, and my afternoons were busy with trombone, guitar & basketball practice. Granted, I wasn’t a 4.0 student, but these activities definately kept me busy.
I would encourage all the parents out there to get your children enrolled in some sort of extra curricular activity. If they don’t want to join the band, then have them take piano or guitar lessons after school. Get them involved in sports. Like Cafe noted, it WILL help them with teamwork, discipline, structure, etc…. and these are great qualities that they’ll carry with them into adulthood.
