What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend?

I thought I’d write an article to see what everyone likes to do during Memorial Day weekend. I’m sure Bar-B-Q grills will fired up all over the city and the wonderful aroma of ribs, chicken, burgers & hot dogs will envelop the city this weekend. Others will no doubt load up the vehicle with camping gear and fishing poles and hit the road to go to their favorite camp site. And yet others may take advantage of this long weekend to clean out the garage, work on their lawns/gardens, have a picnic at the greenbelt, or just relax with a good book.

But let us not forget the true meaning of Memorial Day while we’re out spending time with our friends and families this weekend. Take this time to remember and give thanks to all the men and women of our Armed Forces that have given their lives defending our country and the freedoms we hold so dear. You don’t have to be religious to take a moment and say a little prayer for the families that have lost loved ones in both past and present wars. We may not all agree with the things our government has done in the name of freedom, but I for one am proud and thankful that I live in America. Let us show our appreciation this weekend to all of those that have given their lives so we may enjoy this wonderful land and all it has to offer.

Share with everyone what your idea of a great Memorial Day weekend is. If you like camping with friends and family, do you prefer to “rough it” with a tent and the basics, or do you prefer to go all out with the comforts of an RV? Tell us your favorite spot to camp. Being fairly new to the area, I like to hear about all the great camping spots. I’ve camped everywhere from Yellowstone, Island Park, Palisades to east of Jackson and a few places in between. There are so many great places to camp in this part of the country I try to go to a new place each time. Personally I like camping with a tent, so share with me your out of the way and obscure campsites.

Will you be staying home to relax and BBQ?

Are you planning a trip out of town and will you be driving or flying?

Thanks for your input and have a great Memorial Day weekend!

I won’t be going far from home because of high gas prices.

Mostly a typical weekend of studying code, bike rides, house and yard chores, and a movie or two.

We’re not going to let the high gas prices ruin out weekend. So we’ll be packin up the Explorer to head out camping with family and friends. We’re going to Bear Lake. I’ve never been there but I hear its really nice.
Depending on how much the wife gets packed, we may leave right after I get off work. Otherwise we’ll leave before daybreak tomorrow morning. Most of her family will be arriving before noon today, unfortunately I have to work.

I hope everybody has a great weekend whatever you decide to do!

Gotta work, so everyone else can enjoy the weekend ;)

Have fun!

Sent husband on a mini vacation. Sent youngest child off to new home and job. Blogging and cleaning.

Well we had a great time camping over the weekend, although next time we won’t go with the parents to a crowded campground. I can somewhat understand people with big motorhomes that travel across the country exploring this great nation of ours. They don’t want to waste money on motels, restaraunts etc. But I just don’t understand people that take campers out for the weekend. Personally, I go camping to get away from tv’s and stereo’s and computers and enjoy nature and the peace and quite of the great outdoors. The wife and I were one of maybe 5 people in 20 mile radius that actually camped in a tent, cooked over an open fire and relaxed, hiked and enjoyed nature. Everyone else in this campsite had their campers with their tv’s and radio’s blaring. What is the point in getting away for the weekend, only to sit in your camper and watch tv? It just makes no sense to me.
I was also very dissapointed with all the inconsiderate campers, I remebered quickly why I like to get off the beaten path and camp away from everybody. There were teenagers getting drunk and yelling till all hours of the morning, and the litter that people left behind was just ridicoulus. It just really made me wonder why people even bother to leave their homes. Never again will I camp in a campground with campsites being 20 feet on each side of me.
Aside from that the weather was great and we really enjoyed ourselves. But from now on, I will stick with driving my 4×4 back into the woods as far as I can go without getting stuck and then hiking another mile in to make camp. (that’s REAL camping to me)
Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Those high gas prices are still with us……so this year is everyone invited to your place for a Memorial weekend BBQ or are we all going camping with your family? 8) Ha!!

Being that I’m not too recently single I’ll be wingin it this year….BBQ at my place sounds great though! Funny you should mention BBQ’ing…..I fired up my grill this evening for the first time this season and have some chicken cooking as we speak. Oh yeah….summers right around the corner! 8)

birch creek here we come .joe i need bumper stickers by then ,can that happen? there are so many homesick tourists out camping,

Yeah, I’ll probably be using my stimulus check to buy gas for my sedan next month…

…Instead of going someplace fun for Memorial Day…

Cuban style pig roast outside the little town of Rockland. Camping, bands, many varieties of home brew, guns, poetry, and most importantly-the dedication of a marker to Lt. Gaylord B Treu who gave his life 12-17-59 in the defense of our country.

I forget which site listed the comments regarding the area’s best camgrounds, but I wanted to thank whoever it was who suggested Warm River Campground. This place was absolutely amazing! It’s only about a hour’s drive from Idaho Falls just outside of Ashton Idaho on the Mesa Falls scenic bypass if you’re headed to West Yellowstone. Almost every campsite is right on the river and it’s extremely clean and very well kept. The water was crystal clear and is full of trout. (although I didn’t have any luck catching any) The river is a constant 52 degrees year round as it’s got a number of hot springs flowing into it and because of this, is one of only a few rivers in Idaho that never freezes in the winter. Although it was too cold for me, there were a half a dozen kids swimming and tubing on the river all day long. (I came to the conclusion they must have been natives to the area) :) We spent 3 full days there and every morning and every evening we saw an abundance of wildlife. Moose, deer, elk, snakes, chipmunks, gophers, a couple of beaver and of course rainbow and cutthroat trout. Just 7-8 miles north is both the upper and lower Mesa Falls. These falls are absolutely incredible and provide a perfect backdrop for pictures of the family. Don’t forget that you have to pay 5 bucks per vehicle(honor system) to park in order to see the upper falls and don’t try to get out of it as they DO have someone patrolling the lot. You’ll end up with a 100 dollar ticket if you don’t pay the 5 bucks, but trust me these falls are well worth the cost of parking.
There’s also an old railroad tunnel through the mtn you can drive through but it was closed when we were up there due to a cave in.
Thanks again for suggesting this campground. I know this is one place I’ll make a habit of returning to.
