How would you change the Post Register?

by Joe Vandal May 31, 2007

Roger Plothow wrote about some changes coming to our local Post Register, spurred by an apparently frank discussion with their community advisory board. An immediate change is to stop publishing local opinion page writers, at least for the summer.
Roger said they are open to fresh ideas from the community, so I thought I would open [...]

Kudos to Post Register’s Mr. Harvard

by Joe Vandal May 25, 2007

I read yesterday morning about the Post Register’s executive editor, Dean Miller, winning a year-long Nieman fellowship to Harvard.
I thought about it all day yesterday, and I think kudos are in order for Dean Miller. Whether you agree or disagree with him or his organization, you’ve got to admit that is quite an achievement.

A [...]

What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend?

by chrisr671 May 24, 2007

I thought I’d write an article to see what everyone likes to do during Memorial Day weekend. I’m sure Bar-B-Q grills will fired up all over the city and the wonderful aroma of ribs, chicken, burgers & hot dogs will envelop the city this weekend. Others will no doubt load up the vehicle [...]

Idaho Water: History, Players, Conflicts, and Potential Shutdowns

by Joe Vandal May 24, 2007

It’s probably long overdue to start a discussion on Idaho water issues. Concerns over Idaho water have prevalent my entire life in Idaho, and it’s not something many people understand completely. We barely dodged a widespread water shutdown here in the upper Snake River valley today, but future shutdowns are possible and probable if solutions [...]

Mountain View Hospital: Will the Rebellion Maintain Momentum?

by Joe Vandal May 23, 2007

I promised to start this discussion thread after some people expressed that they felt the EIRMC thread was biased. I have no love for either empire, so here you go.
As I understand it, Mountain View Hospital was started by a group of doctors frustrated with EIRMC’s management, policies, culture, etc. Clarifications or comments on that?
Mountain [...]

EIRMC: Cheer or Condemn the Idaho Falls Hospital?

by Joe Vandal May 20, 2007

Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC), called Er-Mac by locals, has been the dominant Idaho Falls hospital since 1986. It has also dominated local angst possibly more than anything else in southeast Idaho.
This discussion thread is intended to examine some of EIRMC’s history and what they are doing lately. I often wonder if the [...]

What would you ask in an opinion poll?

by Joe Vandal May 17, 2007

You’ve probably seen the polls we do each week at IdahoFallz.com, running lately in the top sidebar.
You might have also seen me asking for new poll topic suggestions every Saturday and Sunday in the live chatbox. Sometimes I’ve gotten a good suggestion from someone, but it can be difficult because fewer visitors hit IFz [...]

I enjoy living around Idaho Falls because…

by Joe Vandal May 16, 2007

I’ve been thinking the past weeks about nice things in and around Idaho Falls, nice things I like to see or do by myself or with family and friends.
It’s one thing for outsiders to read a list of things to do here.
It’s another thing to read why locals enjoy living here, which will inevitably include [...]

Identity Theft: What’s behind it all?

by FeelinLucky May 14, 2007

Identity theft is a huge problem in the US these days. It’s strange, but most Americans don’t really understand how identities are usually stolen and who, for the most part is behind it all. In this article I will shed some light on this topic, and hopefully some people will find this to [...]

What and Where are the Wiser Buys?

by Joe Vandal May 11, 2007

Ever stand in front of two similar products at the store and you wonder which one is the better buy? Do you go for cheap, or do you try to determine the value in the more expensive product?
A lot of purchase decisions come down to individual goals and priorities. You may not care if something [...]

Should Idaho Falls Require Heads of Household to Keep a Defensive Firearm?

by Joe Vandal May 6, 2007

Sometimes these stories turn out to be hoaxes (especially when one reads them on an uber-conservative or uber-liberal website and nowhere mainstream), but I read with interest this story about Kennesaw, Georgia “Gun Town, USA” where they enacted a city ordinance in 1982 requiring households to contain a firearm and ammunition.

Many of you have [...]

May 1, 2007 Open Mike for Southeast Idaho Government Workers

by Joe Vandal May 1, 2007

We have previously published “open mike”-style discussion threads specifically for Idaho Falls city employees, and quality comments always seemed to come through.
This month we will try expanding the “open mike” idea to any government employees in southeast Idaho, city workers in any city, county workers in any county, even state or federal government employees anywhere [...]
