We will start republishing this open forum for Idaho Falls city workers on the first day of each month. The July article for city workers was one of our most commented-on articles ever. We did not hear too much last month, so either our city is humming along happily or everyone was overtaken by the Christmas spirit.

This monthly open forum will be a vehicle for city workers (or anyone with knowledge of inner city workings) to discuss what they think is going good and going wrong for our Idaho Falls government.

City workers are invited to give kudos to people who may be overlooked by their bosses. I hope these comments appear often.

City workers are also invited to alert everyone of potential problems brewing in our municipality. They can anonymously report misdeeds, fraud, or abuse. Our local mass media read the articles and comments on IdahoFallz.com often, and they look into all allegations. Tips left here will produce follow ups.

So city workers, how do you think our local government is running?

Instead of bashing the city I thought I’d try to drum up support for an idea the city will be putting forth soon.

The police need a new building. They are currently renting space from the county and are literally bursting at the seams. Mayor Fuhriman realizes this as he used to work there. And one of the current fire stations, the one in the same building as the Mayor’s office, is falling apart and decaying.

The city has received a generous offer of a donation of land from Ball Enterprises in the area south of Pancheri near Milligan road. The city is making plans to build a combined new police and fire station in that area. It could go to bond as early as next year.

This is a great idea. Land isn’t cheap and the city will save a bundle with the donation. And by combining a police / fire station more money will be saved.

I hope the public will back this idea as its inevitable at this point that the police and fire will have to get new buildings soon. Now is the time to jump on this thanks to the donation of land.

These type of comments are definitely welcome anytime, thanks!

It sounds awesome to me, are there any site or building plans we can look at yet? Any list of spaces?

This sounds like it would be on the west side of the river, right?

This is good info, Blueline. Thanks for sharing it. Like Joe, I am also interested in thinking where this would be located. Does Ball Enterprises own land on both sides of the river, or just the east? Please keep us updated as much as you can.

I would like to see a little more money spent on architectural plans, add a retail coffee shop space for rentals, and create a plaza in front of a nice architectural entrance area.

This would serve to both provide a little revenue for the building and create a congenial environment for the public to mingle with our law enforcement people.

“This would serve to both provide a little revenue for the building and create a congenial environment for the public to mingle with our law enforcement people.”

Sorry but I had to chuckle at this one. The majority of law enforcment I have befriended over the years don’t have a burning desire to mingle with the public. Maybe because they deal with too many pukes everyday. Better to go home or hang out with friends and get totally away until the next shift. Only my observation.

A coffee shop with outdoor tables would be great though. Don’t forget the bagels!

They must be good bagels, made fresh on site, like the ones you can get in NJ! :)

You’re right about “The majority of law enforcment I have befriended over the years don’t have a burning desire to mingle with the public.”

Maybe this would provide a way for more positive interactions, like the “shop with a cop” activities.

Plus it would be unique to tell visitors a great place to visit is the cop shop for coffee and bagels, that would be a positive image boost for our city.
