Idaho Falls’ Best Sledding Areas

We finally got our snow delivered in southeast Idaho! Sledding is a great physical (and cheap) activity to take children out to do here. I wonder the same thing each year: where are the best sledding spots?

There is the small hill in Community Park, close but likely crowded.

There is the Ucon pit next to their exit. It is a short drive out of Idaho Falls, but usually is not very crowded.

There used to be some decent sledding on the foothill going up Lincoln Road, but I heard cops ticket people parking on the shoulder now.

Where are your favorite sledding spots in a short drive from Idaho Falls?

It’s not as good a sledding hill as it used to be, but you still might find it adequate for younger kids. It’s at the north end of N. Emerson Ave. Probably the easiest way to get there is to just head east on E. Elva and follow the road around as E. Elva turns into N. Emerson. Parking shouldn’t be an issue.

There’s a creek at the bottom of the hill, but not so close as to be a big danger. Just be aware.

This was the sledding hill of my grammar school days.

Freeman Park, starting by the Vietnam Vets Memorial can be pretty nice if it’s not too crowded.

How about over in Freeman park on the hill where the Vietnam memorial is, that one is pretty good. Or the hill across the street from the firestation up on Skyline and US 20/Grandview.

Its not in the city itself — but the best sledding spot in the area is the old ski hill on the way to Jackson Hole — Pine Basin. Its probably about 20 minutes past Swan Valley — up towards Pine Creek Pass. I haven’t been there in many years, but it was a great place to go sledding!

Some new folks might be surprised to learn there used to be a ski area called (I think) Taylor Mountain, it was on that biggest foothill you see southeast of town past Ammon.

I don’t know why their history or why it closed so many years ago, but it would be neat to reopen the area if only for sledding.
