How you can return to anonymity

I really enjoy the new “users online” display in our chatbox. Before, I had to run a separate script to show how many visitors we had at any time and who was on, and you had to click a link to see the information. Now we see current visitor information displayed conveniently and concisely.

However, it came to my attention that some people do not want to always be identified when they visit. When you enter a comment or chat, this website automatically gives your computer a cookie file to make recognizing you later more convenient. It is really convenient, unless you visit later and for whatever reason do not want it known you are visiting. I do not want anyone discouraged from visiting IdahoFallz.com, least of all for reason of a virtual spotlight being on you.

You can delete all of your cookies, but cookie files can be really convenient for visiting your usual websites. I will explain how you can delete just the IdahoFallz.com cookies on your computer. You will thereafter show up as an anonymous “guest” until the next time you enter a name, and you will still have all the cookies for your other websites.

Keep in mind that we use cookies for the popular “New Comments” section. Deleting your cookies will make all comments appear new to you again. One technique is to read up on all the comments, delete your IFz cookies, refresh IFz and quickly hit the “Mark all comments as read”. You will still show up as an anonymous guest and truly new comments will appear to you.

How to delete cookies in Firefox:

  1. Tools (pull-down menu)
  2. Options (bottom of list)
  3. Privacy (tab in top middle area)
  4. Show Cookies (button in the middle right area)
  5. Scroll down to IdahoFallz.com (listed alphabetically)
  6. Select IdahoFallz.com to highlight it
  7. Hit “Remove Cookie” button in bottom left corner

How to delete cookies in Internet Explorer 6:

  1. Tools (pull-down menu)
  2. Internet Options (bottom of list)
  3. General (tab in top left area)
  4. Settings (button in the middle right area)
  5. View Files (button in the bottom middle area)
  6. Click either the “Name” or “Internet Address” header at top to sort the list alphabetically
  7. Scroll down to "Cookie:owner@idahofallz.com"; select it and hit Delete on your keyboard.
  8. Scroll down to "Cookie:owner@www.idahofallz.com"; select it and hit Delete on your keyboard.

So I am helping you remain anonymous to this website while visiting this website designed to enable locals to engage each other anonymously. Is that ironic or keeping with our philosophy?

I hope you will let yourself be displayed under your chosen name as much as possible, however I hope even more that this tip encourages you to visit more often.

Two things:

There’s the easy way and the hard way to do things. After I wrote this, my wife said she does something easier and simpler.

She simply enters a “Guest ####” (# equaling four actual random numbers), refreshes the page, closes out the browser, relaunches, and it removes her name. She uses IE; I tried it in FF and it didn’t seem to work for me. But if you can get that to work for you, it’s a better option because then you don’t mess with the “new comments” script.

The other thing is, the conversations tend to rev up the more people allow their names to display. So you might think about letting the name display for the community effect.

You can use these HTML tags and attributes: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

Note: If you submit a comment and do not see it displayed, it may have falsely triggered the automatic anti-spam system for reasons beyond your control. Your comment will appear after it's approved by a moderator (usually within 24 hours or less). There is no need to rewrite and/or submit your comment again unless it still doesn't appear 24 hours later.
