94.3 Gets Family Christmas Music Wrong

Many eastern Idahoans were disappointed when local radio station 94.3 played two months of Christmas music then switched to wuss programming.

The other night I was actually in the mood for Christmas music, and quickly found 94.3 is playing two months of Christmas music again this year.

Unfortunately, I had to quickly shut off 94.3 and dig out a Christmas CD. The reason is 94.3 was playing some stupid call-in show where the host and caller were talking about “The Santa Secret” as if kids were not listening.

My kids laughed when I started shouting a Christmas carol as I leaped over to quickly shut off the stereo before they heard “The Santa Secret”. I gave it a few minutes and tried again. I heard one more song, then the radio show was once again chatting up “The Santa Secret”.

So parents, beware of listening to Christmas music on 94.3 around your kids if you want to wring out another year of “The Santa Secret”. One of my nieces learned the secret from listening to a couple jerks on local radio, so it can easily happen.

Who is programming at 94.3 anyways? Who is advertising at 94.3 is likely a better question.

AMEN! This is only one of a multitude of topics where other people feel they have the right to decide when my children should hear about whatever. Santa, abortion, sex, the tooth fairy, whatever. It makes me angry. Shame on 94.3! Remember when we had prime time and after prime time distinctions so we didn’t have to worry every second about what our children were hearing or seeing? This is one of those “how I long for the good old days” moments.

Another thing that bothers me is going shopping at Walmart, Target or any other store like that and having signs saying “Great Stocking Stuffers”. My first grader is learning how to read and asks me all the time what the signs mean. It gets a little hard to explain without giving away the secret.

That’s a great point Parent of 2, like the stores think we are so stupid we can’t figure out what might be a good stocking stuffer.

Of all the societies in the world, I trust Americans to know how to shop. We don’t need the stores dumbing down our intelligence and forfeiting childhood innocence to make a couple bucks.

Oh man, Delilah is terrible.

This is why I don’t listen to radio … among other reasons. It’s all about iPod for me these days.

I wouldn’t listen to 94.3 if they were the only station around, ever since they changed from a great station to a wussy one. I will never forgive them for that. In fact I will not listen to any stations owned by Sand Hill Media. That includes KUPI 99 and Arrow 107. Any broadcaster willing to sell out their audience on one station deserves to lose them all.

I agree with JeremyPlo. The iPOD is all I can depend on anymore. I remember when I first heard the old 94.3. It was great. It just appeared one day without any warning. Then, it disappeared just the same. Sad.

94.3 started their Christmas music November 1st…..give me a break! Thats almost 1/6 of the year.

Jester, Starting Christmas music on 11/01 is happening in most markets, now. I know one rado station, the “Official Christmas Station,” (per their self-promotion) for a market. While they didn’t start Christmas music until 11/01, they put a link on their home page for anyone who “just couldn’t wait for 11/01.” Apparently, listeners could click on that link and hear Christmas music.

We may see more of that in the next few years, for those “who can’t get enough Christmas music.”

They got music wrong a year ago when they changed formats. Is there anyone who will pick up the slack in radio here and get another decent alternative station?

There is no market in Eastern Idaho for an alternative station…Too many LDS folks, and country is still king. there is a reason these stations change formats… $$$. Also most stations in this town get their programming from large networks with DJ’s that only sound local, I bet you that this “santa” program is getting beamed in from somewhere else.

Do what I did, and ask “Santa” for Sirrus or XM radio…it’s the only way to go here

K & W - I know a lot of LDS kids who listen to alternative music. As in, almost all of them.

The market’s there, it just hasn’t been done right yet.

I agree with Jeremy, I know many Mormons who told me they agreed with me on 94.3, and as example they now listen to K-Bear 101.5 if any radio at all.

Parent of 2, about your comment about the “Stocking Stuffer” signs, I have figured out a way around this that seems to work for my kids. I explained to them that in some families (like my husband’s family) any small gifts are placed in the stocking just so that they won’t get lost under the tree and then Santa can fill up the rest. Alternatively, I have also explained that sometimes they had two stockings, one that his parents would put little things in to keep from getting lost and then the official “stocking” that santa would fill. My kids don’t question those signs at all now because they figure that people do the same thing and buy some small gifts and want to keep them safe. It sounds kinda cheesy but it seems to work (oh and my kids are now 9 and 6).
