I was surprised to see a local reporter on the Oprah show and not see or hear a mention in our local media. KPVI Channel 6 reporter Suzanne Hobbs was featured for about four minutes during Oprah’s November 3, 2006 show on teen mothers who kill their newborn babies.
Footage was shown from the infamous Idaho Falls dumpster-baby incident while Suzanne recalled seeing the baby being removed from the dumpster and discovering soon thereafter that Idaho had no baby safe-haven law. Suzanne told how she kept after local Senator Bart Davis until he initiated and the legislature passed a safe haven law.
The Idaho safe haven law provides amnesty to leave newborn babies (less than 30 days old) at a hospital, fire station, or police station. The baby will be taken into state care without no questions or hassles for the parent(s). The law is credited with saving young lives who might otherwise be abandoned and left for dead.
Suzanne appeared composed and not nervous, and the audience cheered her accomplishments, including adopting one of the babies safely abandoned since the safe haven law passed. I think Suzanne Hobbs represented herself, her station, and Idaho very well. Kudos to Suzanne.

If only the rest of us could see a problem and actually follow through on making a situation better, as Suzanne Hobbes did, we’d live in a much nicer world. Too many of us, however, are like Dilbert’s Wally character, who feels it’s his sole responsibility to angrily identify problems, then leave the soling up to others.
Kudos, Suzanne….You make this a better community. You are a shining example of American womanhood.
