Idaho Falls Legislative Race

This should be the final candidate-discussion article for the 2006 Election season (is that applause?)

I’m kinda disappointed in some of our local candidates exposure to the public. Only Cannon, McGeachin, Williams, and McGimpsey setup websites to reach voters. Only Cannon and McGimpsey made an effort to discuss issues with local voters on this website.

The only exposure we Idaho Falls-ians have had to most candidates are the stupid ads polluting our newspapers and roadsides. No wonder people say they get so sick of the election season.

I know a few of the candidates participated in a debate here in Idaho Falls, but most of us were not able to attend. Was this debate recorded and posted anywhere online so the rest of us could still participate?

Outside of the conventions, the only person I saw was John McGimpsey, who visited my home on his door-to-door walks I heard so much about. McGimpsey even hand-wrote a follow-up card to thank us for the time (actually I was out so he spoke with my wife and therefore didn’t know he had visited Joe Vandal’s home). I don’t know what his opponent was doing, but he certainly was not reaching out to me.

Hopefully in the next race more candidates will make more efforts to reach voters through channels besides the ads.

Here are the local representative choices we have in Idaho Falls, depending on what neighborhood you live in:

District 32A State Representative

District 32 State Senator

District 33 State Senator

District 33A State Representative

District 33B State Representative

So what do you think of these candidates? Is it pretty much a decision of Republicans vs. Democrats, of being happy with what the incumbents have done vs. wanting to change course, or are you voting cross-party for individual candidates?

As a side note, there is the Judicial race between Judge Herndon and Judge Simpson. I don’t know much about this race or these judges, and neither do most people I speak with. The only thing anyone seems to have heard is that Frank Vandersloot seems hard-bent against Herndon, and there was a case that Herndon ruled against Vandersloot. Consequently, most people I have spoken with who have these two pieces of information have resolved to vote for Herndon. I think that’s hilarious every time I hear it.

I’ll be the first to post as I at least had either the guts or a little optimsism left that politics would not dominate this site forever and returned a few days ago! I was probably the most vocal critic of politics here. Most people I know, who felt the web site they had helped build was being used for more and more political reasons, didn’t bother to check in. I’m passing no judgement, simply saying why I’m willing to write the first response.

One fact that strikes me is how few (3) candidates had web sites. In 2006, I think that is ridiculous, regardless of party. Perhpas that is why we couldn’t have more people posting here, with different views, as either some are so confident in their potential wins that their neither see the need or the power of discussion on the web. Whatever their reasons may be, they disappoint me. I certainly hope those who run in 2008 are better educated on how to use the Internet.

Next, for the record, despite what I have been called on this site, I’m a stronger believer in supporting the person I think will do the best job in the office. So you who have had to express your opinions and speculations about me, please put them away. I NEVER vote a straight ticket.

Third, the Judge Herndon issue. I’ll be honest and say I’m not sure whom to believe the most. It was certainly an impressive list of attorneys who went on the record, in the PR ad today, as supporting him. But, as I looked at the list in more detail, it was sort of interesting to me that a lot of the attorneys backing Herndon, either worked at the same law firms, or had in the past. That is neight good or bad, simply and observation.

Yet, as I recall, didn’t Simpson, have a strong enough backing and other lawyer support? I guess this is the one where I would be very open to read thoughts of those dealing with the courts and judges daily.

However, I did notice one significant fact: Kimball Mason wasn’t listed as supporting anyone :) . If you can’t laugh at that, you are more burned out by the campaign attacks and ads than I am.

We have lots of important issues to disucss like the local mistrial, which apparently doesn’t happen often (and how will jurors be selected now vs. why alternates weren’t selected previously), the trial in Pocatello, Christmas ideas, let alone Black Friday (get ready Skitter) and other concerns/ideas others want to present here. I look forward to when we can start those different dialogues.

I hope those who have worked hard in spreading their own, or their candidate’s messages here, can teach other candidates for the 2006 election the value of having their own web sites. I’d say at least two I chatted with briefly last night, are savvy about web sites and computers and could probably help some of those who ran this year. I have NO objections to your politics, I’d just like to see you channel your efforts into getting more candidates post their own web pages. Wouldn’t be great when talking about a concept to be able to link back to that candidate’s web site? At least it would be a start where we could back up opinons by facts much easier. BTW - I appreciated the tips on the laptops on Saturday!

I would appreciate any tips that are honest, non-partisian remarks about voting for the Judge. I admit given certain FVS’s moments, I have a leaning. But, just to be fair, I’d like to know more about both candidates.

Finally, I sincerly hope ID doesn’t have contested races. I think we will see that in other staes in the U.S. I’m looking forward to new themes on Wed., including what I asked Joe to post again, about the future of this site.

I don’t know how many of us take this site for granted and really understand it may not always be here. But, I’ll save further thoughts on that for Wed.

As always, thank you Joe for your wisdom and sense of what is best for the community.

District 33 State Senator
Bart Davis nor Neil Williams have a campaign site.

Don’t know about Bart, but Neil has one:

voteneilwilliams.com

Thanks for the correction John, I couldn’t find it when Googled and it wasn’t linked on the democrat’s website. I’ll correct the original article, thanks.

Ok4Now, that’s funny, I guess nobody was looking for the Kimball Mason endorsement this time around. haha

I will be happy when the season is over and I am sorry to see that the Republicans are apparently so afraid of a few Democratic party gains in our area they had to pull out the “Wedge Issues” last minute. Just think what good cound come from the money that was spent on that full-page ad by the Bonneville County Party or the rotating 1/8 page ads of the Madison County Party. Bleh.

Or the national campaigns (on $ spent). The numbers are staggering.

Joe, Glad to know you saw my KM reference in there. It was meant to be funny.

IF Resident, I’d ask you about the issues, because I don’t like dirty tricks from anyone, but I’m too tired of hearing anything more about politics. Please don’t take it personally. I do want to chat with you in the future, if possible, as we didn’t get to finish an informative chat one evening.
