Congressional Race: Hansen vs. Simpson

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the newsletter or RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I wanted to start a discussion thread of Idaho’s candidates for our U.S. Congressional Representatives (2nd Seat). The two realistic contenders are Mike Simpson and Jim Hansen.

You can talk about most anything regarding these two you would like. I would personally like to see discussion of their past experience, training, accomplishments, and mistakes rather than what their party philosophies are.

Simpson’s official House website is http://www.house.gov/simpson/ (I could not find a campaign site for Simpson, a sign of confidence?), and his wikipedia entry is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_K._Simpson.

Hansen’s campaign site is http://www.jimhansenforidaho.com/, and his wikipedia entry is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_D._Hansen.

Discuss away education or experience that you deem important, or their statements or mistakes you deem important.

Jim Hansen apparently comes from a family of popular politicians, however I care more about what individuals do than what their family did. I see Hansen earned a law degree at University of Idaho, and I’ve noticed most of Idaho’s leadership has graduated from that school.

An interesting item on Mike Simpson’s wikipedia entry:

“On October 7, 2005, Simpson served as the Speaker Pro Tempore of the House and presided over the vote on a gasoline security bill. Opponents of the bill charge that the legislation did little to help gas prices and merely provided tax breaks to oil companies. Simpson was presiding over the chamber during a vote that was scheduled to last 5 minutes, but stretched to 44 minutes. Simpson did not close the vote until a sufficient number of Republicans had been convinced to switch their votes. In the end, the majority voted in the affirmative to pass the bill by a 2-vote margin…”

So Mike Simpson was someone who ensured the oil companies got their billion-dollar tax breaks last year. Within months all the oil companies were posting billion dollar profits (obviously they didn’t need the tax breaks, did they?)

I’d like to ask Simpson supporters to tell me what Simpson has done for ordinary Idahoans during his time in Congress…he was abrasive, defensive and rude during his debate with Jim Hansen and that is a huge turnoff. Not to mention his own neighbors, all Republicans, voted against him in 2004 and had his opponents signs in their yards. Apparently he is incredibly rude and many people who know him personally don’t care for him.

I’m still trying to reconcile Mike Simpson threatening to throw Bill Sali out the third-story window with Mike Simpson embracing Bill Sali at the Republican convention?

I’ve met Jim and I love the guy. I’ve met very few genuine people in my life and Jim is one of them.

You can watch these candidates debate on Idaho PTV’s website:

I’m going to vote for Jim Hansen! Don’t you think it’s time to vote out the incumbent - Mike Simpson - and move forward. Look at where the current establishement has taken us. It’s gone downhill with the current beauracrats in control. Vote for change and make a difference!

Interesting video demonstrating Mike Simpson parroting Karl Rove’s speech:

Is he really looking our for Idaho or is he a national party tool?

That was certainly a strong argument to vote for Jim Hansen. Borrowing anything from Karl Rove’s “Demonize the opposition and energize the base” approach is certainly not something I want to see!
