New Welcome to Idaho Falls monument on Broadway freeway entrance I have been eagerly anticipating the erection of a new welcome sign next to the Kicks66 gas station on Broadway. This is the Broadway entrance to Idaho Falls from the freeway.

The area used to be an eyesore with a chain link fence and rusty old metal sheds. The fence and buildings were razed several months ago, and the resulting patch of dirt now has an attractive vinyl fence. The concrete footings for the new welcome sign were poured last week, and I kept hoping the final piece would not be weak.

I was not disappointed! This large monument is beautiful and completely appropriate to the setting. The artist who carved the falls looks to be the same one who created an art bench at the downtown corner of ‘A’ street and Capital.

Unfortunately, it appears that a sizeable chunk broke from the face on the bottom, but some strategic shrub plantings should cover that defect.

I have heard there is some kind of clear coating you can put on monuments like these which make cleaning graffitti off much easier than without the coating. Given that Idaho Falls has been under seige from vandals, I hope the city will apply this coating.

While taking this photo, I saw a couple bulldozers digging out a curving path. The curving indicates to me it will not be for underground facilities, possibly this if for a future meandering nature path?

I am excited for this development and give kudos to all those involved with putting up this gorgeous welcome monument. Let’s hope we see more like this.

This is defenitaly what IF needs! I almost got in a wreck looking at it the other day. As far as the nature trail, Joe you are right on. The plan is for a trail and landscaping that follows the highway.

In a chat earlier today with Archy, we discussed how neat it would be to connect this trail with the greenbelt. Imagine passerby-ers stopping to take a walk and suddenly end up next to the river.

The city shouldn’t stop here though, how about a sign like this at the other exit. After all there is alot of room for it there. And not stopping there, when the Sunnyside exit is complete, they should put another sign or sculpture to compliment this new sign.

I love what is taking place area in and around downtown, and I’m sure more suprises are in the future.
