Do past relationships set us up for a future fall?

by Your Gal Friday September 29, 2006

After you have been in relationships that have turned out less desirable for some reason or another, does that inturn mean we sabotage any future great relationships? Time and time again I talk with men and women who tell me they may have let the best “thing” (person) go. In the same regard, [...]

IF Public Transit Exists!

by JeremyPlo September 27, 2006

Like many of you, until recently I was unaware that Idaho Falls maintains a public transportation system.  After all, the system’s only method of advertisement seems to be the buses themselves.  The system recieves little advertising on billboards, newspaper, or television.
So, here is the news – we have a bus system!
Recently, I began exploring the [...]

Bravo Mayor, Bravo!

by dnix0112 September 27, 2006

It has only been a short while since Jared Furhiman took over the mayoral duties of our fair city, but I for one think he has done a very nice job. In a short amount of time he has been able to stitch closed a couple of bleeding wounds. By wounds I mean projects that [...]

How to Write Articles: Advanced Information

by Joe Vandal September 25, 2006

This online community is designed to be a reflection of our Idaho Falls community. We host lots of discussion activity via the chatbox and comment responses to articles. This series will help more people make the transition from reacting to published stories to writing stories themselves (which then generate comment responses).
The more people who write [...]

Ban Predatory Lenders

by Joe Vandal September 22, 2006

I was glad to hear someone is finally considering cracking down on predatory lenders. Predatory lenders are all those quick-cash, title-cash, payday-loan places that you see popping up in the cheapest storefronts all over town. They charge something like 200-1000% in APR interest. They are often identified as one of the worst financial mistakes anyone [...]

Time to Rethink Food Stamps?

by JeremyPlo September 19, 2006

I am the original bleeding heart.  I mean that.
However, lately, I’ve been rethinking the whole concept of state-sponsored charity – namely, food stamps.  This is mainly because every time I go to WinCo, I leave mad as hell.
You know what I’m talking about.  I’m talking about you going through the store, being very careful to [...]

Issues facing our community

by Scott L. Cannon September 18, 2006

During the last few months, I have had alot of fun going out and knocking on doors, talking to voters about the issues that they face. I would like to take my door-knocking to the cyber-neighborhood that we all share here on this site.
I would like to hear from you, the people of Idaho Falls [...]

Hack Grocery Discount Cards

by Joe Vandal September 18, 2006

How do you feel about those grocery store discount card programs? Albertson’s and Smith’s run these, where you get the normal deal with their card and pay a buck or two more if you don’t (yes, it is run that way not the opposite).
I never like giving my information to any companies. I refrained [...]

Four-day school weeks in Idaho Falls?

by Joe Vandal September 16, 2006

The Post Register reported Boundary County is reaping great rewards since switching to a four-day week. Fridays are off, and are a time many students engage in positive extracurricular activities.
Many corporations have allowed four-day work weeks. Some Idaho Falls businesses offer four-hour workweeks.
Should Idaho Falls and/or Bonneville School Districts switch to four-day weeks? What [...]

Goodbye, McDermott Field.

by dnix0112 September 15, 2006

As I watched the Idaho Falls Chuckars play what was to be their last game of the season last night, I couldn’t help but feel saddened by the loss. The loss of the old ballpark that is. Immediatly upon entering the front gates, a feeling came over me that this would be my last time [...]

Extend the greenbelt to the west.

by dnix0112 September 15, 2006

The city finally has a stand-out welcome sign. There is also a plan for a nature/walking trail that will go some distance to the north so visitors and travelers can get out and stretch thier legs. Knowing this I can’t help but think, “Why stop there?”.
Instead of ending the trail why not extend it so [...]

Are We Prepared for Absolute Accountability and Zero Tolerance?

by Inside Observer September 15, 2006

Has anyone considered the implications of absolute disclosure and zero tolerance in the Kimball Mason debacle?
It appears from the postings that there are few who advocate tolerance, however, the implications this could have for our fair city may be more traumatic than many [...]

Mike Adams’ Tall Tales

by Scott L. Cannon September 15, 2006

Thursday morning I woke up, had a cup of coffee and sat down to read the Post Register. What a treat I was in for, local fiction writer, Mike Adams had a new piece in Talk Back. While I will stop short of calling Mike Adams a damn liar, I will say that he has [...]

“Welcome to Idaho Falls” Monument Unveiled

by Joe Vandal September 14, 2006

I have been eagerly anticipating the erection of a new welcome sign next to the Kicks66 gas station on Broadway. This is the Broadway entrance to Idaho Falls from the freeway.
The area used to be an eyesore with a chain link fence and rusty old metal sheds. The fence and buildings were razed [...]

by Joe Vandal September 14, 2006

Editorial Note: This article was submitted to me by someone else, a local who is concerned about the Rex Rammell situation and who has unique perspective. If they choose to follow this up by registering and writing more, I’ll change the author’s name on this article to properly attribute their work.

How You Can Help Find Idaho’s Missing Persons

by Joe Vandal September 14, 2006

I read in this morning’s Post Register that today is Missing Persons Day. I can only imagine how difficult these cases are for the families involved, not having closure. The rest of us are left with creepy feelings and speculating what might have happened.
There is actually a way you can help solve missing persons cases! [...]

September 11 Remembrance Walk Around Greenbelt

by Joe Vandal September 11, 2006

September 11 is an awkward anniversary for most Americans. I always reflect back on attacks and the subsequent tragedy, and remember how I was glued to media for a solid week thereafter. I feel I shouldn’t to anything happy or joyous on September 11, especially when two wars have ensued since then and Osama bin [...]

Homework before Video is Business before Pleasure

by Joe Vandal September 5, 2006

My smart wife started this school year on the right foot with a rule that our son must finish his homework every day before he can watch any television. No ifs, ands, or buts; no video is allowed for him until he finishes his homework and either mom or dad go over it to ensure [...]
