Tourists have to cram the most enjoyment into never-enough vacation time. How about we suggest the best places they can get great pictures in Idaho Falls and surrounding areas? When taking these pictures I always like to take a couple with family and a couple of the scene itself.

My top ten photo opportunities would include:

  1. Taylor Pedestrian Bridge: the structure itself, surrounding river, nature scenes, Japanese pagoda-like sculptures.
  2. West bank of Snake River: there’s a viewing platform that overlooks the falls.
  3. Downtown art benches: several design styles and family poses create fun picutres.
  4. Taylor Crossing: Roundabout has beautiful bronze eagles and cougar, with several waterfall views as you walk around. Pond at Chevron: yes it’s a gas station, but it is a great nature pond and the fishing boat in the middle is a perfect touch.
  5. Freeman Park Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial: the large reflective structure on the hill provides beautiful angles and views.
  6. Tautphaus Park Zoo: the animals are always great, but the scenery make great photos also.
  7. Eagle Rock Art Museum: a large sculpture in front provides several photo angles (go inside for free exhibits).
  8. Library statue of Where the Red Fern Grows characters Billy Coleman and his two dogs: little ones can sit on the dogs.
  9. Broadway bridge: long view of falls pointing towards temple.
  10. East bank of Snake River: war memorials and cannon.

Where are these locations, you ask?

I thought of providing links to the locations on Google maps, but then I realized all you have to do is ask a local. We’re all happy to help visitors find these locations. Just ask!

What locations would you second above, or what locations did I miss that you would recommend for great photo opportunities?

One of my favorite IF views isn’t in IF. Wait until it’s dark, then head east on Lincoln road until you hit the crest of the first foothill. Park the car, turn around and take in all the lights.

Great suggestions. What is funny to me is that many of the locals don’t know where some of these locations are. For example, the Idaho Falls magazine ran a story on the State Vietnam Memorial and many Idaho Falls residents didn’t know it was even here.

Kewl What about the east bank of the river closer to the temple? For many people seeing the beautiful calmer water is soothing too.

Also, have you thought of going more south to the boat dock or whatever it’s called. As Magazine Guy rightly points out, many people either don’t know where spots are or their correct names.

Since this magazine is about growth and prosperity, if I understand it correctly, what about getting a picture of one of the larger building projects going on right now?

Additionally, have you thought of doing anything with animals like horses with those who train them? I don’t know how aesthetic Sandy Downs is, but a private stable or riding club would be an interesting change. I have an aunt (in a different state) who is invited to several states each year for their various parades, given what she’s accomplished with her horse.

I really like those unexpected shots. One that comes to mind in the past six months was one I believe Robert Bower shot for the Post Register. He got the top of some building with an airplane eith taking off or landing, in the sunset. It was cool. For matter, perhaps the growth at the airport or different airlines might be some different subject themes. Just ideas, I don’t know if any are workable for you.

Another great spot for pictures are the new river sculptural rock things located just across the east side of the road from the roundabout.

They are about five or six round brick ponds, standing about 2′ high and about 6′ around, with a big pourous boulder in each, with water pumping through the boulder holes, cascading down into the pool, then out three ways onto the walkway.

It’s better seen than described. I took about a hundred pics of them today. Definitely a great place to take pictures of your family or kids.
