One Hell of a Sandwich

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the newsletter or RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

The other day, my wife and I were visiting our good friends the Hansons who recently opened a new salon on A street, and we suddenly found ourselves craving some sandichey goodness. Across the street, we found Geraldine’s Bakery, and decided to give it a try.

Geraldine’s makes one hell of a sandwich.

So this gave me the idea to start a topic where we could compare notes on lunch spots in Idaho Falls. I haven’t noticed all that many quality sandwich spots, so if you know something I don’t, let me know.

I’ll start. I’ve graded the resraurant with a letter grade, which will be in parenthesis.
Geraldine’s Bakery: (A) The bread really makes the sandwich here, but fresh soup and tastey meats really help. Decent prices, great food.

Big Al’s: (D) Overpriced, underportioned, slow service. The only real plus about Big Al’s are their homemade soups, which aren’t as good as they used to be.

Gandolfo’s Deli: (C+) A bit pricey but okay. The thing I really cannot stand is that they microwave all of their hot sandwiches, making them taste a bit “off” and soggy. The salads are killer.

The Villa: (B+) Way overpriced, but utterly delicious. Great hangout, really good sandwiches, and a good selection of coffees. You can easily slip into a $10 lunch if you’re not careful.

I would add two:

The Sandwich Tree on corner of Rollandet and 17th street: (C+) Probably cheapest prices in town, but also skimpiest/smallest. Good value if you’re low on money you still get fueled up. Needs a antechamber entrance to slow the many flies in eating and preparation areas.

Wendys: (A) I normally don’t like Wendy’s but their Frescata sandwiches are awesome. A big square of thick crusted bread with turkey and mayo and tomatoe, it actually fills me up completely. Doesn’t leave you feeling like gagging yourself like their greasy fast food. About $4.xx

Bar none, the best lunch place — if you like sandwiches — in Idaho Falls is the Riverside Deli, on Pancheri between the river and Yellowstone Highway. If you’re a big fat guy like me, you’ll like their huge sandwiches — I get a combo sandwich, 8 inches — and not a skinny eight inches — for about $5.50. They’re actually big enough for two meals, if you’ve got the willpower. A plus all around for fast service, fresh ingredients and value.

Geraldine’s in Ammon (A-)
All of the above about Geraldine’s downtown, but the traffic and volume of people make this one a little slower. Perhaps more lunch room is needed?

Jeremy, I like your selection of this subject. Lots of time I’m really pressed for time for lunch (if we get lunch). I’d also like to know who does catering/delivery lunches.

I have to agree that Geraldines has good food. Their bread and rolls are good as well as their sandwiches. The Wendy’s frescata sandwiches are also good.

Is there a bakery, Geraldine’s or any other, that can make an authentic hoagie roll? I’m originally from the Delaware Valley, I know what a sub ought to look and taste like, and nobody’s making them here. The same goes for cheese steaks. Idahoagie tried, but their bread was too crusty and they were overpriced to boot.

Ironically, I can make a pretty decent sub or cheese steak with the poor boy rolls they sell at Winco and Smith’s. I seem to recall hearing that Geraldine’s does the baking for Winco, but I’m not sure. In any event, it shouldn’t be too hard for some place around here to make a sub that kicks ass.

Winco sells some of Geraldine’s rolls and cinnamon rolls. But most of Winco’s bakery items are made there. The ones that are from Geraldine’s are marked with Geraldine’s label.

Okay Jeremy, I found excellent sandwich fare today. Carstens’ Bakery on Cliff makes HUGE sandwiches (I recommend ordering a “half”). They offer about the most vegetables I’ve seen in town and you can choose up to two meats for the base price.

Have you tried Babe’s bakery by the mall?? That place has amazing food. The peoople who provide the service may be grumpy but it is worth it for the food. Also Brownstone in the downtown area by the river trail has the best French Dip Sandwhich I have ever had. Try it! You will love it!

Ms. Powells (A) has good sandwiches…fresh bread sliced thick…nice….reasonably priced! They also have homemade soup which is really good. You can get a sandwich and a bowl of soup for like 6 bucks.

I agree with the others on Geraldines, they’ve got some great bread. We always buy there rolls when we go to WalMart or Smiths. The Sandwhich Tree and Riverside Deli both offer great sandwiches although it seems like they both use the same bread.
I also agree with Rondo, there’s no place around here that sells a good cheese steak. I know cause I’ve been looking for the past year. I guess its an east coast thing. I’ve also yet to find a good cornbeef sandwich as well.
The Frescata sandwiches at Wendy’s are good. It’s the only thing I’ll eat from that place.

Great Harvest on 17th street has a delicious sandwich. You fill out a slip and check off the things you want. You can add soup & drink. Cost wise though, it’s a bit pricey. I think to get the soup, carrot sticks, drink and sandwich combo it’s about 8 bucks. The sandwich is enourmous though, with big fat fresh veggies. I end up needing a fork to eat mine.

I’ve always wanted to try that Great Harvest place. Nice to hear a good review….I’ll have to give them a try.
Thanks
