Dex Plus turns out to be useless ad-vert

I previously wrote that I thought the little ‘mini-yellow pages’ distributed last winter by Dex Plus was kinda cool. I liked how small it was and that it could fit into a briefcase.

Then I tried to use it the other day.

I needed a local printer, and thought I would look it up on the way. The only printers listed were in Pocatello and Shelley! I looked at the cover that claimed southeastern Idaho coverage, and realized that such a small a yellow page directory had to only include businesses that advertised specially in it.

So it turns out the Dex Plus is completely useless as a reliable business directory. Mine is already in the garbage, and next year any new one dropped on my doorstep will face the same fate. What a waste of time.

Understand your frustration however I would blame the advertisers who do not want your business rather than the directory. When i turn on the TV and there is nothing to watch or the programs are crap, i blame the stations, i don’t throw out the TV!

Why would businesses pay to be in two phone books? Most already spend a fortune to advertise in the real yellowpages. (the one most people use when looking up a business) Then DEX comes along and wants a piece of the pie, and not all businesses want to advertise with them, so there not included. I didn’t even bother to keep mine as one phone book in my house was plenty. I can understand Joe’s point of view though wanting to have something small enough to travel with or fit in a briefcase.

There used to be a day when you could just pull over to a phone booth and use the phone book hanging there. Long gone are those days. I can’t even remember the last time I saw a public phone booth.

Since this article published I use 1-800-GOOG-411 to get free directory assistance calls, so no more needing to carry a phone book around.

Reflecting back on the little Dex PLus, it seemed to be more noise than signal, I noticed I don’t see it published anymore.
