Idaho Quarter Designs

I am not a coin collector, but I have a little boy and so we have been collecting the custom state quarters. He keeps asking what Idaho’s quarter will look like and when it will be out, so I looked around for the designs.
The U.S. Mint has scheduled Idaho’s quarter for released next year (2007), however the design has either not been decided or not announced yet.
I found this coin collector’s website that hosts four proposed images for Idaho’s quarter. There’s actually a fifth design proposal, described as just the letters “IDAHO” but each letter “attempting to symbolize the state’s rugged individualism” - I think that designer should have done a sketch.
I couldn’t find a contact to ask permission to reuse his images, so I encourage you to go to his site and see the four proposed Idaho designs yourself. Come back and leave a comment of which quarter you would like to see as Idaho’s quarter.
I think I like the sawtooth mountains version, with the river that flows out into the Idaho state outline.
Which design do you like best?

So the PR reported today that our previous governor Dirk Kempthorne chose the peregrine falcon design for Idaho’s quarter to be released in 2007.
You can click the link in our original article above to see the four design sketches. I’m not going to cry and complain over this issue, but I really think the Sawtooth mountains design was much better.
I notice the chosen falcon design also highlights Boise as the only other design element, perhaps this is another sign of our state’s power struggle?
I’ll throw another crybaby out about the chosen design: why only half the falcon and Idaho with a star on Boise? Why not a full falcon body in flight or landing on a branch (an action shot)?
Has the PR ever published those four quarter designs before today? I don’t remember seeing them, but I commented here yesterday and guided to the link that had the designs, then lo today they published the designs. Mmmmm.
I think the falcon design was a distant 3rd place to the mountains and hills designs.
Or like I suggested and Marty 2nd’, at least show the falcon in flight rather than a bust shot.
Uggg, is there any way to appeal?
Okeydokey, it’s obvious the majority of Idahoans are not happy with the state quarter design that Dirk Kempthorne chose.
Is there any way it can be changed? The quarter could not have gone into production yet, and hopefully they have not started producing the die casts yet.
What will it take for interim Governor Jim Risch to change the design decision?
Although it’s too late now, I thought I’d join the others here in lamenting the quarter design. I bet 90% of Idahoans don’t even know what a Peregrine Falcon is, let alone having ever seen one.
Personally I would have preferred something along the lines of the “River Of No Return” or even the Gem state theme mentioned earlier. Either one of those would have been more representative of the whole state. The falcon design is horrible. We will, indeed, win the most awards for the ugliest quarter.
I was researching the general blogosphere opinions on the Idaho quarter design, and the design is hated all around.
I found this quote, “Kempthorne press secretary MikeJournee said, and “prefers something simple that conveys the grandeur ofIdaho.” (http://www.bluefish.org/idquartr.htm)
So this falcon and a star on Boise conveys the grandeur of Idaho more than the Sawtooth Mountains design, ehh? More than the rolling hills and rugged mountains design?
One thing I find disappointing and frankly disturbing is the lack of comment on the Idaho quarter design from interim governor risch. Newspapers around Idaho have been teeming with letters expressing disappointment in the chosen design, and yet risch seems to refuse to acknowledge the issue.
This reminds me of how risch kept trying to wimp out of a real public debate with his opponent. I’m quickly losing patience and respect for this short-timer. Be a strong Idahoan and answer the people!
Answer up risch: can you change the design still, and will you change the design in response to Idaho’s request?
I don’t really know if anything was taken away from education recently. The gist of the “emergency” session of the Idaho legislature was mainly to shift our tax base to reduce property tax and find ways to shift the tax burden to something else. Nobody got their taxes reduced, it’s just the perception that that you pay less here, but you end up paying more there…
In reality, the people that made out on our recent tax restructuring were all the Utahrds and other out-of-staters that own property in our state. They just got their property taxes reduced while not contributing a dime to our schools, infrastructure, or anything else. We have to foot the difference in sales taxes, which, granted they pay some of too, but it’s all of us homebodys that get nailed for the biggest share. Thank you, Gov. Risch for screwing us in favor of out-of-staters. Give ‘em some free taters while you’re at it. I can’t wait to vote you out. I think Risch had to be taking lessons from Kempthorne all these years, because he’s carrying out the same kind of free for all spending that our former governor did.
I know that this diatribe really has nothing to do with the quarter design, but I have no knowelege of anything that was taken away from education. If you go to the Idaho lottery website it will tell you that the lottery has just turned in a record amout of money to the state, much of which is earmarked for education. I know that at first all of the lottery proceeds were to go to education, and now it doesn’t any more, at least our lottery has managed to produce large amounts of tax free cash to fund the building of schools and many other education related things, and it still continues to produce said funds. That may be one area where we are able to extract some funding from our neighbors to the south. It will be needed even more in the future, considering our new tax laws.

IMO, they’re all pretty sad … though I’m glad there wasn’t a design featuring a potato. Why not focus on this great state’s contribution to nuclear physics? Television?! Pop culture!??!?! (frickin’ idiots!)
I like the design featuring the state flower, but I hope they come up with something better.
