Revealing Web 2.0 Strategy

Three common questions I get asked about IdahoFallz.com is if I work for the city/mass media, where I came up with the idea, and if I’m making any money on it.

My answers are no, several things converged in my mind, and I’m not overly concerned with that yet. I am concerned with creating a quality product that is useful and used. The saying goes to do something you love and the money will follow later.

A new buzzword has been floating around called “Web 2.0″, yet it’s persistence is making more than a fleeting impression. Web 2.0 refers to new online strategies, and is more complicated than I could explain it.

In designing, creating, and growing IdahoFallz.com, I’ve paid attention to the following Web 2.0 strategies:

One of my favorite quotes about Web 2.0 philosophy is the following:

“We don’t care about the Fortune 500–it’s the ‘Fortune 5 million’–the small businesses that are doing interesting things.”

I have seen too many endeavors in Idaho Falls become nothing more than advertising catalogues, and I did not want to become another one of them. I have a personal commitment to quality, so I thought long and hard and engaged many discussions about how I could provide quality information about local businesses. I want to help promote local businesses and help them do better, but I also want to provide unique information that consumers would benefit from.

Today I unveil a new feature at IdahoFallz.com: Business Profiles.

Our business profiles are designed to promote Idaho Falls businesses with new approaches. They are designed to benefit readers by enabling them to find out what a a business is about, where they are located, what they look like from the street, and find all their contact information.

If in the middle of the night you need to know what time a business opens in the morning, we will have it. It’s also designed to help fund some of IdahoFallz.com’s growing costs and planned feature rollouts. IdahoFallz.com has numerous potential avenues to pursue, and I always welcome suggestions from the readers, who are becoming the largest stakeholders.
