Street view of Etched In StoneA lifelong native of southeastern Idaho, Joni Dixon always appreciated the intermountain west’s understated beauty. Her fondness for all things natural and authentic became a quest to integrate natural elements attractively into an urban world, which formed the cornerstone of Etched in Stone.

Today, Joni leads a growing team of Idaho artists and engravers – including her own children Jana Richens and Tim Richens – in transforming locally gathered stone into everlasting personal accents. The business has expanded into tile and slate, fulfilled hundreds of custom requests, and renewed old favorites.

Etched in Stone’s products continuously draw interest with their simple class suiting indoor and outdoor environments. The fresh, yet timeless products have earned the reputation of affordable private artifacts with prices between $10 and $900. The premier engraved stone producer in the Western U.S., Etched in Stone sells through specialty retail shops (including its own Idaho Falls storefront), and the Internet.

All Etched in Stone rocks are hunted in Idaho quarries for appealing colors, shapes and character. Great care is taken with each piece, yet the everlasting displays are priced affordably for any enduring message. No stone is too large, and they can assist in creating stunning sub-division boulders and signs.

Why are you the best at this?
We know each stone will brighten someone’s life and become a family heirloom for generations. We use only the best products available to guarantee perfect results.

Why are you passionate about this?
We love our finished products! We have them in our yards and know how wonderful they are. When our customers spend their hard-earned money on a stone, they will never regret that purchase.

What is a surprising thing most people don’t know about your business?
The paint we use is guaranteed outdoors for 35 years!

Describe a time when you really came through for a customer.
Catering to customers is just the way we do business. Stones normally take two-three weeks, but our customers often need stones for weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries in just days. We seem to get them done in time for each event. Early orders are encouraged, especially for Christmas!

What are your qualifications to do this business?
I have started and operated several businesses, have 20 years experience in sales and marketing, and 10 years experience in graphic design and editing. Our best qualification is: “We love what we do.” Our hearts and souls form our cornerstone, and that is the best foundation for success.

What do people using your business get that they won’t get anywhere else?
People get the best quality products available in the United States. Each and every stone is individually unique and custom designed. I’m a little biased, however I believe southeastern Idaho has the best river rock and cobble stone anywhere!

What else do you want people to know about your business?
We engrave on anything! River rock, flag stone, granite, marble, tile, slate. Metal pieces, wood, and glass. We have etched logos, designs and names into beer bottles, mirrors, anniversary plates, cabinet doors—we can engrave anything!
