Jerry Shively is running for Idaho Falls 33A Representative against Republican incumbent Jack Barraclough . As I understand it, Idaho Falls’ representative districts are shaped like a donut and a donut hole. Jerry is running for the donut hole, which is mostly in Idaho Falls city limits.

I asked Jerry why he would do better than his Republican opponent. Jerry replied that education comprises the largest part of Idaho’s budget, and since his background is firmly education he would better understand it. He taught at Skyline High School for 22 years, served 16 years as an administrator and three years on the school board. He has seen education from all vantage points, and thinks it important that Idaho get some legislators who are more familiar with the process and needs.

Jerry said he was raised on a farm west of Idaho Falls, but the land got annexed into city limits. He managed the farm as rental properties, and so has business experience and is acutely aware of tax issues.

I asked him about illegal immigration in Idaho, and Jerry replied he felt it should be a national solution since Idaho cannot control the borders.

I asked why Democrats are so despised in Idaho, and Jerry disagreed with that viewpoint. He believes they’ve been in the minority so long they are discouraged, but states they want what’s good for Idaho.

I asked Jerry why Democrats would be better than Republicans, and he replied because Democrats represent middle class and working families more accurately than Republicans.

My impression of Jerry Shively is he does care about Idaho, and nobody can deny his long Idaho Falls history makes him familiar with our local issues and needs. Jerry gave brief and to-the-point answers, without unnecessary hot air. I think that’s a refreshing trait in any politician.
