Normally I do not see long lines at our public library, however I also avoid crowds and visit during off-peak hours. I have previously suggested they create self-checkout stands, but I would suggest one other minor thing to control lines: line corrals.
I saw line corrals used effectively at the Boise public library. They are basically just stands that guide where people stand in line, like at the movies or bank. The Boise library had installed permanent, wooden stands, but cheaper alternatives exist with velvet ropes.
Using line corrals would also alleviate the traffic problem that exists now when people enter the library straight into the line waiting to check out. The line could be directed to weave back towards the big columns, and with a line more waiting patrons could be organized in a smaller space.
The other problem with waiting in line is kids running around wild while parents check out. Short of a kiddie pit, we’ll likely have to just accept nothing is perfect.
