Six Free Downloads To Protect Your PC

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the newsletter or RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I wrote last winter about six free software downloads that I use on new or reinstalled computers (Fortify New Computers Against Internet Evils), but I thought I’d summarize them again because so many people ask about the subject. We may even list them in the sidebar permanently.

These six downloads are free and keep your computer from getting infected with viruses, pop-up ads, spyware, adware, or sluggish behavior.

  1. Eraser (a better file deletion tool)
  2. AVG (free antivirus that won’t bug you like Norton)
  3. Spybot (spyware protection)
  4. Ad-Aware (adware protection)
  5. Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer (blocks popups)
  6. Firefox Browser (a more secure browser overall)

Shut your screensaver off before installing these to ensures it does not kick on and cause problems. Do this by right-clicking on the desktop and select Properties. Select the Screensaver tab and change the type to None.

Some programs may prompt you to start scanning your system right after installation. Decline the scans, but reboot after each installation and go to the next. Run the scans after all the programs have been installed.
