War Memorial Ideas

Since it is Memorial Day, I’ve been kicking around ideas for how Idaho Falls can better honor our war veterans.

We are unlikely to be chosen as the spot for a national military cemetary like Arlington. However, is it possible we could create a new cemetary and dedicate it solely to military veterans ourselves? It would not be officially recognized by big government, but would certainly be regionally recognized by veteran’s themselves.

A design competition could be held for the Idaho Falls Veterans Cemetary to make it look sharp from outside and in. I imagine a monument could be placed inside that includes three war cannons, or similar iconic forms. It would also be a perfect place for setting up flags on Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

We already have our ‘foriegn wars’ memorial on the greenbelt by downtown, and the cannon next to it. Perhaps we could build a new park on the east side of town to balance that and include a large veteran’s memorial in the new park. I envision a ridge constructed with hollowed fortifications like in a battle, overlooking a sweeping plain area (where soldiers would attack across).

Or perhaps a war memorial that honors what our local soldiers did in Tikrit and northern Iraq? Designers could interview the local National Guardsmen who toured in Iraq and list the positive imagery they can recall. These positive images can then be incorporated into the new veteran’s memorial to communicate what our soldiers were trying to accomplish over there. A local Iraqi war memorial will become overdue before long.

Perhaps we could construct a statue(s) in an intersection, like where there is a roundabout?

What ideas do anyone else have regarding these suggestions or your own ideas honoring veterans or creating war memorials?

Oops, after reading this morning’s Post Register, I realize I forgot to mention that Freeman Park has the impressive Vietnam War memorial located majestically on top of the hill.

Does anyone know why it looks like an upside-down ‘V’? Is it commentary on the Vietnam war?

I thought of this war-memorial story since it’s Veteran’s Day today/tomorrow.

What kind of Iraq war memorial could be built to honor the soldiers, acknowledge the deadly and horrible situation, and yet keep it free from political commentary?
