I just read the newest Stephen King novel, Cell, in only three days. It was excellent, captivating, and the story pulled me through quickly. I highly recommend reading it.
Stephen King seems to write two genre: horror stories and human stories. An example of his human stories is The Shawshank Redemption. Cell definitely falls into the horror story genre.
This story is about the entire world going in a handbasket, and this happens in the first six pages. A signal is sent out across all cellular phones that makes people go insane. They attack each other like animals, and attack the ‘normies’ who did not hear the ‘pulse’.
The story entails many gory details that will eventually translate well into a live action movie. The human drama is captivating also, as one man journeys to try finding his wife and young son. It is interesting to see how society immediately devolves and new societal rules grow up. The tale is also quite scary, which is what pulled me through the book so quickly.
I read some reviews of Cell at Amazon.com, and found some people did not like the ending. I found the ending to be perfect since it ended right at a climactic moment and left the story unresolved. I like stories that leave me with questions rather than tying up every loose end. I ask the people complaining about the unresolved ending why they do not complain about King not telling what happened at Logan airport? It seemed a big deal at the beginning, and was left completely unresolved as the story took the characters in a different direction.
I highly recommend reading Cell by Stephen King.
