Mayor Fuhriman has declared April 24th thru the 30th to be Idaho Falls Kite Week in an effort to encourage more people to get out and use our community parks. I spoke with Dean Turnblom of Sunrise Kites (460 Cleveland St) and found out a little more about the grades of kites available, some pricing and some of the planned events.
Kites come in grades from 1 to 5. Most of our local department stores sell grades 4 and 5 Grades 1 and 2 are available from Sunrise Kites and range in price from about $5 to well in the $500 range. But make no mistake, if you want to get serious about kites, Dean from Sunrise is the source you need to contact.
Sunrise Kites will be at these events with some of their 2 and 4 line kites for people to try out. The itinerary for the events is as follows:
Wednesday, April 26, 2006 Community Park 5:30 until dark
Friday, April 28, 2006 Sandy Downs Park Kiting Just For Fun
Proposed media event with the mayor
Kite flying competition
3:30 pm until around 6:00 pm
Saturday April 29, 2006 Sandy Downs Park 12:00 pm 5:00 pm
It will be a real shame if our local media doesn’t at least make an effort to cover this great local outdoor event. Let’s get out there and support the people in our community that are making an effort to bring us all outdoors for some good, clean fun.

I think it’s great for a picnic and kids.
There is usually a food vendor or two, but you can bring your own food and a blanket.
For kids under about 10, there is a kite-thing they throw over kids’ shoulders and the kids race against the wind, it’s pretty fun for them. It’s also free, so the kids just run right back around and get in line again, all afternoon long.
Otherwise for adults, it’s just nice to go see 15-30 kites flying around.

the dollar store sells 2 kites for a dollar and they work really good too. I buy them all the time and take my 3 nephews my son and daughter to the park flying kites all the time. The kids love remote controlled airplanes and choppers blimps and kites. My favorite is taking them to cape kurley park because there is free wireless internet. and access point there that is high speed . I can fill my cooler full of cheap pop and ice and buy some chicken from Winco. They have the best chiken by the way. And I can do all of my work chat to freinds and family online and let the kids unwind. I love the parks. My life would be a living hell with out parks. I am a single dad and I do not have a wife to cry to I am responsible for the kids. And to everyone out there that is. Try it take them to the park every day atleast once. Don’t say oh I work and goto school blah blah blah. I run a buisness and goto school and I still find time. Take them to the crossings look at the fish. To the river feed the ducks, to tauphus park or the zoo, the museum, drivins, there is alot to do, reeds dairy has the best ice cream in town and its cheap take them there to cool off. Idaho falls has alot for our children. Parents are the key to it all just take them there.
