The Museum of Idaho’s INL exhibit emphasized how much knowledge has existed at our beloved nuclear site. I wondered how much of that knowledge has transferred from the scientists, engineers, and medical professionals to our community, and especially to our local educational opportunities.
I propose an Idaho Falls science fair, open to all 6 local high schools in districts 91 & 93. Student individuals or teams register a hypothesis, and are linked up with advisors (any INL employees with applicable knowledge to the project) to plan, document, execute, and present the findings of their projects. Some local businesses would happily donate proposal funding and prizes. Prizes in several categories and scholarships would certainly motivate our local students to get more involved in science, medicine, and engineering.
An Idaho Falls annual science fair held annually or twice annually woul eventually result in some students taking their project and starting businesses in Idaho Falls. Our economy would become much stronger and more diverse, and everybody wins.
