Security update frequency is yet another reason to use Firefox browser instead of Internet Explorer. A recent study found that Microsoft generally takes much longer to fix security holes in IE than the Mozilla foundation takes to fix security holes in Firefox. Over the past year, IE takes an average of 135 days to get security patches from when the hole is discovered, compared to Firefox’s 21 day average to get their security patches updated.
This report also cites a Carnegie Mellon University study that found among 325 software vendors, open-source vendors patched security vulnerabilities 60% faster than the proprietary, closed-source vendors.
Open-source has rarely been innovative like private companies, but open-source solutions are clearly the better option when they are available. BTW, if you get Firefox browser for Windows by clicking the big banner link at the bottom of this page (and it’s the first time you’ve downloaded and installed it), you help IdahoFallz.com out a little.
Try Firefox browser and you’ll sleep more secure tonight.
